Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murray Ruins It :/

Quick question: On the "Hawthorne" compilation is that Murry's voice I hear in the CR during the backing track for "Fun Fun Fun"?
IIRC during the "Caroline No" session, Brian says, "Let's do a good one for Murry." Not sure though if he was present or on the phone. Yeah, I think he calls him up halfway through. Yes, and on SOT you can hear Hal Blaine goofing off with his count-ins. It's quite funny; on one of them he goes "one-two-three-MURRY!" It's hard to tell whether Hal is mocking Murry or just gently teasing him, but his tone seems pleasant. It's possible that people outside the family/inner-circle didn't see Murry as such a bad guy, but just another piece in a crazy puzzle (that of course featured Brian at its center).

it's because i was going to ask the question but i did more research and found out the answer so i said nevermind lol
You did ask the question though. So either you're a liar or I am. Which is it? MAKE MY DAY. Bichez (french version of bitches, which is even more feminine (no offense to women though, it's meant in a "male being overly feminine" way. Which of course is also certainly offensive in itself. Let's just say that this guy isn't thinking correctly, and I myself have made an error of judgement in assuming that you all (as well as my future self) will share my current mindset. Let's agree to disagree, shall we? Let's be frieeeeeeeeeeends, let's be frieeeeeeeeeeends, let's be frieeeeee-ieeeeeeeeee-ieeeeeeeeends)).

What kind of processing is used on the lead vocal? In fact, all the vocals sound processed. Maybe that's why, because it's more of a record production and perhaps he doesn't think it would work as a live song. It's also really slow. Mike likes the up tempo numbers for himself.
I think the vocal effect is a Dolby Stretch - where you record with the Dolby noise reduction encoding ON then play back with the encoding OFF - you get this kind of hyper-bright compression which is pretty extreme and kind of beautiful. I've sometimes used a similar effect with tascam noise reduction too. Sounds spooky and cool... Tape delay and mild phasing, also some Moog widgetry. SWD could give us chapter & verse. I'll dig out his book. BTW, you should hear this over 4 channels. Wish he'd reprint that book, I'm dying to read it. Don't you EVER question the Desper. But seriously, I'd love to get a copy as well. Mr. Desper, if you're reading, you've got another sale here for whatever it's worth.

I'm moving to Japan to get these remasters sooner than any of you other low-life, poor Westerners.
However, if the remasters later materialize as releases in the so-called "Western world," then I will be sending my entire bill to one AGD. There will be blood on his hands, literally. But not in the literal sense.

It's a funny tune. A ripoff of Hungry Heart....
Ah, you reminded me of something else I wanted to mention. When the song started up at the concert I was like "Hushabye?! With a Caribbean rhythm on it???!!!" The first 4 notes of the melody (and chords underneath it) are the same, and having not heard the song prior it fooled me for a second.

Two things:
1) Hearing this song on this tour, a few weeks ago, was the first time I'd ever heard it. I thought it was pretty cool, and was looking forward to hearing the studio version. Upon seeing this thread, I loaded the song up on youtube, and immediately remembered why I've avoided this era of the band! It's just so damn 80s, which isn't really an adjective, but I think you'll know what I mean. So slick and drenched in reverb. I'm sure Joe Thomas loves it. Juuuuuuuust kidding. But seriously, I'm glad my first exposure to it was the live version, so I can at least stomach the studio version. I'm thinking the live cd of this tour will contain my definitive version of the song (if it's included that is).
2) More relevant to some of the discussion in this thread, I think the falsetto in the original is Brian. As mentioned above, the reverb is so thick, and the part layered so much, that it's hard to tell. Throughout most of the song I couldn't make heads or tails, and if someone had told me it was or wasn't Brian, I could be swayed either way. The turning point was the end of the song, where the key modulates up. The falsetto part is having to reach harder for the notes, and there's a more human element that breaks through where (I think) I can hear the voice as Brian.

Wow, this is actually quite good! I'm really liking Mike in the clips too, he seems so proud of the band.
Just did a chord sheet if you want to play along at home. Apologies if something is off, some parts are a bit hard to hear. Also thanks to Andrew for the lyrics.

What's a kokono? And what a weird avatar.
A "kokono" is the song "Kokomo," with "no" replacing the syllable "mo," which makes more sense if you use the correct capitalization as in the username, i.e. KokoNO. The avatar is the cover of the Kokomo single, with a "prohibited" type symbol (a red circle with a diagonal line through it) superimposed on the cover. Taken in concert, I believe that the above 2 pieces of information are meant to imply that the user is suggesting that he/she has a certain degree of disdain for the song Kokomo. The tongue-in-cheek aspect of the statement (as demonstrated, perhaps subtly, by the emphasis of the "NO" in "KokoNO," along with the (assumed to be done on purpose) sloppily drawn "prohibited" sign on the Kokomo cover) implies that the user's dislike of the song is not very substantial, and the comment is meant more as a joke than a suggestion of literally banning the song in any meaningful and/or legal way. I hope this response adequately addresses your question(s) and concern(s), implied or otherwise.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stamos In Reunion
|
on: January 14, 2012, 08:19:20 AM

The full-on Stamos would make me reconsider going to a reunion show. Seriously.
The inclusion of this guy suggests an approach to the reunion that's more commercial than artistic, more crowd-pleasing than ear-pleasing, and more about Mike's vision of the band than Brian's.
And that's okay! I don't begrudge anyone enjoying that sort of thing. I might even enjoy it if I'm in the right mood. But it's certainly not what I would have hoped for from the reunion shows. And it's therefore my right -- and everyone else's -- to not go if it seems like something we'll hate.
There are a lot of posts in this thread that sum up how I feel, but this is probably the most accurate. The "Do It Again" video made it seem like the reunion was going to be classy, and befitting of one of the greatest bands of all time. However, the inclusion of Stamos (with no ill will personally meant towards him), seems to jeopardize that. It is not merely him being there, it's what that signifies- that this tour is a wacky, fun, "bring your kids" affair. And as Wirestone said, that's perfectly fine. But it makes it clear that there should be no illusion that this tour will be the final artistic redemption of the band that some people wanted it to be.
