1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 25 Years Ago: SMiLE CD T 2580-2 on: October 11, 2014, 03:45:05 PM
I had a re-boot of this on a label called Red Robin.   Anyone else have that?

Previous to that I ordered the original 2-CD set from Dave Prokopy.  He wrote back to say he'd send it as soon as he could but his tape deck was in the shop!  We all know how long electronics repairs take.  It was literally four or five months of waiting.  I vividly remember the first listen, at work.  At that point all I had was the GV box material and the pitiful Early Years offering.  A great day that was!

Catch a Wave, people.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The most Landy-ized lyrics on: November 13, 2013, 09:41:55 AM
I certainly think of Landy when I hear

"A lotta people out there hurtin' and it really scares me."

"I won't let you see me suffer, whoa not me," etc.

4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Brian ruin Heroes and Villains by adding the \ on: October 05, 2013, 05:20:40 AM
I'm a cantina version fan all the way.  I think the "three score and five" bit is the best part of the song and the "la la la la la" is just the song treading water for a while.

Reminds me of another Brian - Jones.
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Off-topic junk from "Those who post nonsense, threads that are one or two posts only, etc..." thread on: August 04, 2012, 01:26:38 PM
I don't think RangeRoverA1 is polluting the board at all. Let's remember that the Beach Boys love all girls and wish they all could be...well, you know the rest! If RR's avatar is actually her own picture, then we should all be a lot nicer!! And if it's not--RR: "Girl Don't Tell Me"....  Grin

Also, please keep this kind of stuff out of here, it's just creepy. I've noticed that whenever we have a girl posting here, people can't control themselves and things get carried away to the point of melodrama. I know, it's novel that there's a girl posting here, super awesome, but if want to flirt, take it to private messages or something.

I'm glad somebody pointed this out. I agree, very creepy.

Besides, the avatar is Jenny Boyd, younger sister of Pattie "Layla" Boyd and former wife of Mick Fleetwood.

Yes.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Imagination - why wasn't it a hit? on: April 23, 2012, 06:14:37 AM
References to "the beach" and "another bucket of sand" killed the album two minutes into the first track.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 02, 2012, 07:48:24 AM
How "finished" was Cabin Essence by the collapse of the SMiLE sessions? I know that Dennis's "truck driver" vocal was recorded in '68, but other than that I don't know any details.

Does it occur to anyone that there was no such thing as a truck driver who would high tail their load off the road when the grand coolies were working on the railroad?  Just a thought.

Boy Lovers

If you want to find yourself under investigation by the police, that's a good one.

12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs on: March 22, 2012, 05:30:15 AM
Any song that doesn't contain the word "kids," "groovy," or "cool" or "outtasight."   And Salt Lake City.   LOL
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was it their band name that killed them off in terms of popularity? on: March 22, 2012, 05:26:04 AM
The name was most definitely a blessing and a curse, a blessing for two or three years, and a curse for the rest of eternity.  I think about that line in Good Morning Vietnam where Krohnaur says "for God sakes get the Beach Boys" to come play in Saigon and someone quips "their agent says they're still on the Beach and won't be off till September."  Makes me cringe at the pigeonhole that name put them in, to paraphrase Dennis, forever.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What went wrong after Holland? on: March 05, 2012, 07:15:07 AM
Well, Endless Summer sure turned to gold so the pressure was off financially.  To paraphrase Ray Davies, it was was also creatively easier to give the people what they want and turn into an oldies band, which that co-billed tour with Chicago did to them.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your opinions, on where Mike is mentally with all this on: February 16, 2012, 01:11:06 PM
Big deal if he wiggles his fingers or dances like a fool. (Real fans like myself, dig it!)

I'm a 'real fan' and I don't dig it.  Roll Eyes

You'll be won over by the inevitable return of the chicken dance.

Stamos will sing Forever, no doubt.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When/How/Why The Beach Boys were dissmissed and dubbed \ on: January 05, 2012, 04:31:59 AM
I love the Sunflower album as much as anyone but with a lead-off single like "Add Some Music" it's probably no wonder it wasn't a huge smash for the group. Personally I think it's a very good and charming little song but at the time it might have sounded a little too much like a bunch of bored millionaire rock stars singing about things all nice and cozy and that apparently didn't get them back into the limelight.

The voice of Mike Love on Add Some Music is like an aural candy-striped shirt.  And when he sings "The world could come together as one/if everybody under the sun/would add some music . . . " it was obvious they were trying too hard.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson's best vocal arrangment and/or orchestration since the 70s? on: January 04, 2012, 09:26:59 AM
I vote Rio Grande.

I picked Sunflower barely over Friends.

This is me too.

I always hear "I'm your kind I'm your kind of Nazi" in the chorus. Shocked
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Top questions you'd like answered about SMiLE on: July 07, 2011, 01:10:35 PM
Sure I do. It's the loneliest number.

OK, I could've submitted each question one at a time. But I was trying to make up for all the joke questions people were putting up!

OK, going back to one question:

Brian, did you ever continue to work on SMiLE tapes in secret after the project was canned, as has been rumored?

Somebody stop me...
No, no - keep 'em coming!

Also:

Was the "intro" (firebells/whistles) intended as intro to Heroes & Villians or Mrs. O'Leary's Cow?

Is there a recorded vocal for "Old Master Painter"? (YOU sang this at the Atlanta Smile show)

Was "With Me Tonight" intended as part of Heroes & Villians?

Just have to say you have the most awesome avatar ever . . .
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's the most Whacked Out member of the band? on: March 10, 2011, 01:28:36 AM
Eh.  He was a half ass member.  BTW what's he done since then?

He plays guitar in the Rolling Stones, covering for Keith Richards on guitar from behind the amps.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you like worms video on \ on: February 14, 2011, 02:02:11 AM
Thanks for that, Have to say it works well. And I was under the impression that a number of Videos was made around this time (66/67) like the "Fire" video, Guess I was wrong?

The 'Fire' video was actually for 'Good Vibrations'.  Although it matches up much better with 'Mrs. O'Leary's Cow', for obvious reasons. Unless you're talking about the home movie of the Boys in the studio wearing the Fire hats-which, now that I think about it, you probably are!
Also, I recall watching a movie a few months back on YouTube. It was somebody's mix of 'DYLW' with 'Little Pad' thrown in, and it had clips from different BB things of that era, like Brian in the studio wearing a fire hat, the Boys outside on a beach somewhere, someone with a movie camera (I think it's Paul McCartney), and a part where Carl (I think) rides his bike down a bunch of hilly streets. I can't find it anymore, and I think it was made by a poster here on the board.

Curious then, that Mike at one point puts his fingers to his mouth like he's holding an imaginary joint and rolls his eyes, suggesting that the music was drugged out, leading me to believe he knew it was for Mrs. O'leary.  Hard to imagine Mike not being a fan of GV.

Dude, you poached my avatar . . .

So it seems I did! And I thought I had one no one else had. Let me work on that for you!

No worries man.  Time for a change.  If anyone already has this, please let me know.
