Buffalo NY, originally from Scotland. I'd love to hear from any local fans!

In my sig, from Friends. I know better but choose to believe those are the lyrics.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: ISN'T IT TIME SINGLE VERSION (BBC Radio 2) LISTEN NOW on: September 05, 2012, 08:16:12 AM
A total dog's dinner to my ears. It's a lazy and frankensteined remix, and very much to the detriment of the song.

Wow, never even knew about this...feel like I missed out Sad
5  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Got free tickets to Blur. Not sure if I should go? on: August 09, 2012, 12:54:24 PM
Since the early 2000's, Blur have been (rather cyncially, I think) pushing themselves as a 'box set' band: the South Bank Show special, po-faced articles galore....as if they have some incredible back catalog legacy that's been criminally undervalued. I see they've just released an 18CD 'career retrospective', which is ludicrous. They just seem to be driving this campaign to have their averageness elevated to the level of (for example) The Smiths.

They've had their moments for sure, but they're just not as good as they seem to think they are.

18 CD's!

This is about as out-of-the-blue as it gets! It'll be interesting to see what kind of show they'll put together.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys 2012 Remasters! on: August 08, 2012, 10:09:21 AM
After offering "Sunflower" & "Surf's Up" as a twofer, offering them in 2012 on two separate discs(and with no bonus tracks) is simply a poor value.

After making such an effort(in 2011) to give the fans everything that they wanted(or at least everything possible, given the still-existing tapes) in the 5-CD + vinyl + book "Smile Sessions" box set, I'm disappointed that the 2012 "50th Anniversary" archival campaign has been poorly coordinated, and falls far short of what it could have been.

Quite simply the most embarassing thing you've ever posted, which is no small feat given your numerous, inane postings on here.
8  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Somewhat painful Bruce Johnston interview in a Dutch magazine on: July 25, 2012, 01:52:57 PM
Journalist DOES sound like a dick, and went in with an agenda. The Beach Boys never been an overtly political band, they've always avoided that and have every right to (just the same as people have the right to wear their political hearts on their sleeves). Yet this guy can't help himself from trying to steer it into some pointless political cul-de-sac.

I mean, he can print whatever: it just makes him classless to listen in to a conversation not meant for him (for a prolonged period, apparently).

Absolutely sterling work! Thank you for posting Smiley
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What TWGMTR Songs Would You Add To The Setlist? on: June 29, 2012, 07:00:52 AM
I would LOVE to hear 'Summer's Gone' live, but I just don't see it working in the context of the current live show. If Brian returns to solo performing, it would be nice to hear in that setting.
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Beach House - Bloom on: June 27, 2012, 08:47:40 AM
I finally checked these guys out after hearing the name a few times: I like very much! 'The Hours' is rattling about inside my head quite a bit. Kind of Beach Boys meets Cocteau Twins, I think.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Daniel Johnston on: June 27, 2012, 08:27:03 AM
I absolutely love Daniel: I haven't listened to everything, but he's an incredible pop songwriter. I was lucky enough to see him live a few years back with Teenage Fanclub backing him up, and he was in top form. I do appreciate that his recordings/musicianship are pretty hard for some people to see past, and I second Hypehat's recommendation for the 'Late, Great Daniel Johnston' tribute album. If you still can't see the brilliance of his songwriting in that setting, well...

The mentioned documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" I consider a must-see.  A brilliant piece of documentary filmmaking in its own right that put the artist in the best possible context to appreciate, to my mind.

What's amazing about that film is that there is actually footage of events like the NY Sonic Youth episode. I also love that it doesn't glorify his illness: it shows it warts and all, and how devastating it has been to him, his family and others.

13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the "What are you listening to now?" thread on: June 27, 2012, 08:12:01 AM
Aside from 'Summer's Gone' (which I can't take my ears off!) I've been listening to the Orange Juice box set pretty obsessively: mainly 'The Glasgow School' and 'You Can't Hide Your Love Forever'. They were quite something.

Cripes, that's truly awful stuff. Mike in his element.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will you go and see Mike's Beach Boys after the 50th Anniversary tour ends? on: June 25, 2012, 06:56:37 AM
It's a no from me. I think this'll be my last hurrah as far as any of them go, actually.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child is criminally underrated on: June 25, 2012, 05:23:07 AM
I can't help but be reminded of Landy when I see Gilbert Gottfried behind the mixing desk.

As for the song...it's really not the worst in the world, or even in the BB catalog. Carl's vocal is great, the production is very much of it's time, and Al's ponytail is something to treasure.

What the hell is that? The weirdest thing is it doesn't seem spontaneous...
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Am Not Attending a Beach Boys Concert In 2012 on: June 20, 2012, 05:09:47 AM
I sat on the fence for a good while about going: I wasn't gung-ho about the reunion, fully expected to be a naked cash-grab with little to interest fans of the mid-to-late 60's period. I read about the auto-tuning, read a few set-lists and heard 'Spring Vacation' and felt pretty good about not going. Then I saw the setlists slowly broadening in their scope, watched the RS performance, read the Rolling Stone article and listened to the album...it all totally turned me around. Then I saw half-price tickets on Groupon, and snapped them up. I'm extremely glad I did.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Strange sounds, edits and other oddities on: June 13, 2012, 12:32:47 PM
The missing flange effect on the word 'life' in the chorus of 'Be Here In The Morning' always sticks out for me. That, and the vibraphone flub on 'Let Him Run Wild'.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What do you hope DOESN'T happen at the BB's Show you have tickets for? on: June 13, 2012, 05:44:28 AM
I'm going to the Buffalo show. I just hope the positive changes in the setlist haven't reverted by then. I hope Brian is up for it (like everyone else I suppose).

I hope that Mike's hat is carried off by a sudden gust, revealing a mane of golden tresses. That would be something.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Finally make the cover!! on: June 11, 2012, 06:17:28 AM
A dubious honor. Their photo is only marginally larger than that of a Pomeranian's head, and a lighthouse.

Actually, David has poured his tour money into the development of a giant Pomeranian dog that he will ride around on from this day on.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Rolling Stone Set is online on: June 06, 2012, 10:11:58 AM
That was fantastic, and for some reason not blocked by my work's draconian filter! Thank you for posting Smiley
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How would Brian sound now if he hadn't ruined his voice? on: June 06, 2012, 09:55:47 AM
I think in the last few years Brian has really recaptured the sweetness of his voice, and that we're not far off from what he would have sounded like were it not for the 70's/80's. Personally I don't hear any of 60's Brian in 80's/90's Brian, at all: it could be a totally different singer. I felt in moments of LOS and particularly the Disney album that you could hear his classic tone come through, and that most people would recognise it as the same guy who sang on the classic recordings.

Would absolutely buy the Jardine shirt and the Help Me Rhonda (It's in the UK and out of stock?). Anyone with suggestions?

Keep an eye on the wornby site, they said they'd have more up soon.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jeffrey Foskett keeps the Beach Boys reunion in harmony on: June 04, 2012, 11:03:10 AM
Ah...Embarrassed a little slow on the uptake, only because I have seen threads full of venom for Foskett. Fair dos, I see what you're saying.
