76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE: Bring It On, Fanmixers. on: November 05, 2011, 02:01:34 PM
I am making now the mother-of-all-fan-mixes, which is actually not a fanmix but a complete fanmixers toolkit.
I am assembling a collection of all known Smile fragments/songs/test mixes (only master takes in the most complete form and best quality available), neatly indexed and labelled, in mono and stereo (wherever possible).
I hope to find a way to share it, as it's mostly officially released material (on the box set).
See me in about two weeks (if I survive)  Smiley
Count me in!

I've done a stereo mix for the end tag of Holidays, because the down pitched box version is painful to listen to.
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Holidays on: November 05, 2011, 09:13:41 AM
I've actually took 30 minutes and a couple of tracks to re-do this tag with cubase, added a little time correction for the harpsichord part and added a little reverb and EQ, it sounds pretty cool to me and there's a lot of chance I'll use it when I'll do my own mix. Feel free to PM

Anybody has a high res picture of Brian in the studio control room, at the console?

I want to make a screensaver for my iMac in my recording studio, though this could look good

Just listened to it, it was one of my fave moments on smile, they just killed it...they should have flown in the harpsichord bit with the vocals and get rid of the marimba backing track for this particular bit.
81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions Price Thread. on: November 05, 2011, 06:31:44 AM
Yeah but I'm a student, with these extra 30 - 35 euros I can buy enough food for a little month

Did he really say that?

Damn it.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions Price Thread. on: November 05, 2011, 05:12:35 AM
Same think for me!

The box cost me 94 euros (with fast shipping to France), so I love Canada!
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile (sorry...): How stereo can it be? on: November 05, 2011, 05:05:44 AM
OMP/YAMS - no, Denny's lead is missing
Cabinessence - no, Carl's lead is missing,
Wonderful - no
CITFOTM - Some sections yes, others, I don't know. The 2nd verse on disc 1, no.
Good Vibrations - no, vocal tracks are missing

So it doesn't matter if the vocals we have are in mono, as long as the intrumental backing tracks and some backing vocs are in stereo.  Wink

On Good Vibrations: some backing vocals are available in stereo ("hum de hum" overdubs in e.g.)

Exactly!

I've seen on youtube a stereo GV with mono vocals over a stereo backing track, I think it's a member from here who made this mix (a Member of Parliament?) and it just sounded better than all the stereo vocals versions I've heard before. Vocals don't necessarily need to be stereo, especially when there's a lot of vocal parts: having them in mono can add something very powerful. But I'm just saying that because we can't mix GV vocals the way they mixed H&V stereo vocals on the box (amazing mix.)

The question is, what do you do when you've got a stereo backing track, and a mono mix with vocals? From previous experiences I know that mixing them together just sucks totally. So, accodting to you we can make a stereo TSS, how?
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can't Wait Too Long on: November 05, 2011, 05:01:12 AM
Well maybe not exactly, but at least it makes a clear connection between CWTL and SMiLE. Many of the SMiLe songs have that chromatic pattern at some point during the song
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile (sorry...): How stereo can it be? on: November 04, 2011, 04:04:29 PM
Thanks!

Fire would work, with the Fall Breaks vocals?

Archaeology Part II CD 2 TR 4 has a version where the vocals are prominent, but it's really slower and it's impossible to remove the instrumental part...
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Smile (sorry...): How stereo can it be? on: November 04, 2011, 03:39:54 PM
With the content of TSS, and the large number of bootlegs covering the sessions (knowing that we already have H&V, Surf's Up, Wind Chimes, Vega-Tables, and almost have Fire - but unfortunately without the Fall Breaks vocals - full stereo versions)

I don't know if I should try my own version or wait a good stereo Smile fan mix to arrive, but just to know if I should get high hopes or not, how stereo can this masterpiece be, with what we have, if we try to be as close as possible to the mono mix?
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Surf's Up on: November 04, 2011, 03:33:02 PM
If it were released officially in 1967, we wouldn't have a 19 song album. As much as I love mono, I really think that the 2cd version at least shold have been as much stereo as possible. The stereo mixes on side 4 literally blew my mind. Mono can do justice to a beautiful production work (I'm thinking about Spector's River Deep, Montain High), but I don't really think it's the case here.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can't Wait Too Long on: November 04, 2011, 09:21:02 AM
I think there is a clear link between the vibes part of Can't Wait Too Long and the bass part of Wind Chimes, actually it's exactly the same

My Obsession by the Rolling Stones

The stereo version is simply amazing. Goosebumps every second.

I thought it was Carl alone
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I found a way to have vocals only mixes for early albums on: November 03, 2011, 06:01:11 AM
Yeah. I think that's it's probably because the "default audio output" is always the left channel. I guess you can do that with the crappy stereo versions of (every) Beatles albums, assuming the defectuous cable is the right one
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Deluxe Reissue Box Set Fantasies on: November 03, 2011, 05:53:56 AM
One deluxe box?

Maybe Wild Honey. At least a stereo mix would be awesome. A Surf's Up box would be great too, with lots of Til I Die sessions... 3D

The 1st paragraph sums up exactly how I got into the Beach Boys. Great review and read.

Haven't recieved it yet...this sucker is still freezing in Hamilton. ON, Canada! Amazon says it's due to arrive on wednesday. Won't be able to pick it up till next thursday.

I'm planning on turning the lights off a bit, lighting up a huge spliff and waiting for the epiphany to come.
spliff+smile= out of body heavenly experience. Brian's Trip
I just CANT WAIT TOO LONG!
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can't Wait Too Long on: November 02, 2011, 02:39:12 PM
Everytime I hear this song, you know what I think about?

"You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)"

Am I alone?
I actually see what you mean. Pretty long song, with lots of different sections and repeating the same lyrics over and over again is that what you mean?

Holy sh*t, is Mike doing lead on the verses of this version?

Mike: I'm gonna be 'round my vegetables, I'm gonna chow down my vegetables
Brian: I like you most of all...
Mike: My fav-o-rite vegetable!

Never noticed it before, thought it was all Brian, but I'm 99.99999999999% sure that's Mike now.
I've actually always thought that they both were signing all the lines simultaneously, especially on "I" of the second line, I really hear two different voices (if you don't count the other twelve I have in my head)

The only bit that feels odd to me is Great Shape...Barnyard sounds fantastic, I think, and YAMS is good as always. There's something about Great Shape that just feels weird, maybe it's how it's structured, because to be honest I've never had a problem with the demo vocals. I'll have to give it a few more tries, but this might be one bit I redo for my next mix.
I've had the same feeling. It's the time-stretching they've done to make the flyins fit to the backing track.
