Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Surf's Up

I thought that the 'album mix' on disc 1 was really great...the falsetto during 'columnated ruins domino' blew me away. It's a fitting mix to one of the more epic songs of the 60s, and I could see Brian's vocals growing on me and becoming as grandiose as the 71 mix.

For me, it was the real bridge between pop music and experimental music, it was the first time I heard something really 'compositional' and 'difficult' attached to a pop standard and it opened me to a whole new world, ironically that world being the world of pop music. From Smile I went to Olivia Tremor Control to The Beatles and from there to everything else. Nowadays 60s pop is a huge part of my musical palette and I literally owe it all to the 'alternate mix' of Heroes and Villains.

I like the fade in the 71 version, I always thought it was a really powerful way to end the album, one that JMZ's mix takes to a logical conclusion, though both are excellent. I don't recall the Purple Chick ending, but if it's identical to BWPS, with the swell of vocals instead of a fade, it's not bad, but I prefer the 71 mix as the first version I heard. Still haven't heard the TSS mix, so I can't comment, but I'll stick up for the 71 mix.

If there was a leak, I'd probably just hunt down Vegetables, since I've already heard it on Facebook. Otherwise I'll hold out temptation...only 13 more days, I can make it!
Even if you were tempted ? Heh, over all these years since young me first discovered file-sharing, I've been pretty good about holding back from downloading whole albums ahead of time. I'll get one or two songs to tide me over and wait, and I've already heard FIVE songs from Smile. One from each disc is good enough for now, eh?

Hmm...I've been working on ideas for a new mix, and I'm one of those purists who try to make something similar to a 67 version, so I might as well toss that out there...I'll expand on this all after the honeymoon, but at least for now I'll post the tracklist:
Prayer (unlisted) H&V pt. 1 (inc. Great Shape) H&V pt. 2 (inc. Barnyard) Do You Like Worms? Wonderful Cabinessence
H&V 'intro' ie Fire intro (unlisted) Vegetables Wind Chimes Fire Love to Say Da-Da Child is the Father of the Man Surf's Up
No clue where to put Vibrations...it would feel weird stuck in the middle of either side, but I think that H&V and Vegetables make killer side openers, and Cabinessence and Surf's Up make killer side closers...possibly lead off side 2 with it before the 'Fire intro' so that it sits apart from the rest of the tracks...it actually might sound good with the Intro whistle following the Vibrations fade...

Probably one of my favourite Smile mixes JMZ, I just heard it a couple days ago and more than anything else I was blown away by your interpretation of H&V pt. 2...it's the first one I've heard that makes it sound like an actual song and part of Heroes, and not just a collection of sections...I'm gonna start work on my next attempt at a mix after the box drops, and there'll definitely be a couple of your ideas I'll take to heart. Thanks!

Currently staying at my parents house, going to lay claim to the record player and schlep it up north in anticipation...get up early, head to Frisco, buy the box, drive home and enjoy. Nothing too exciting.
And what will your new bride have to say about this ? Well this is gonna be after the honeymoon, after all!

I think there's one part of that last Leila post that we should be taking better stock of: as it's so eloquently put, we're going to have 5 CDs of pristine quality material to mess around with ourselves, and if something on disc 1 doesn't sound right, it can be easily changed. For better or for worse, Smile isn't just a Brian album or a Beach Boys album, it's an album that belongs to all fans, and this one permutation is hardly going to be the last word on the matter. I know that, a couple days after digesting the box, I'm gonna hunker down and start working out my next chapter of my own Smile saga. Disappointed about the lack of new revelations? 46 years after the last tape went down, the fact that we're getting ANY revelations is cause enough for celebration, and Smile is not only a masterpiece in and of itself, but it has the potential for countless masterpieces besides. Hell, I'm getting married in a couple days and I still have to ponder the upcoming box.

I can finally say that I'll have enough to pick up the set come Nov. 1. I can't preorder it, but it'll make a great wedding present to myself. Now I just have to convince the wife to move beyond just Pet Sounds and try some of Brian's weirder work...
The prophecy shall be fulfilled, the dream shall become reality.
I don't mean to pick on you but I feel that one of the biggest misconceptions about SMiLE is that it is weird. The Beatles' "Revolution 9" are "What's The New Mary Jane?" are weird. The unheard "Carnival Of Light" is probably weird as well but I think most of SMiLE fit into for better or worse some type of musical framework. Due to Van Dyke's involvement, the lyrics were certainly more flowery and poetic than previous Beach Boys records and the music was certainly some of the most complex Brian has ever wrote but I never considered it weird. Now stuff like all the Psychedelic Sounds ("Side Stroke", "The Bottom Of The Sea", "Swedish Frog") that stuff was weird but there is no indication that any of that stuff was actually going to be on the album. So maybe it's just me but I think this whole weird vibe that SMiLE gets is largely due in part to sensationalistic stories involving Brian's mental state at the time of it's creation as well as some comments from Brian himself ("We all got stoned and put microphones on top of our heads) that from what I've been told don't relate to the SMiLE sessions at all. Fair enough, I may have misspoke. It IS 'weirder' than Pet Sounds, and for what it's worth I'd say that Smiley Smile was 'weirder' than Smile. Not to mean that it's intentionally strange, though I'd say that it's at least purposely more avant-garde, in the same way that a lot of musicians put out more consciously 'progressive' music at the end of the 60s, like The White Album, Odyssey and Oracle, Odessa, etc etc. I guess weird is a bad phrase, more that all these musicians were allowing their artistic sense to dictate the music over their commercial sense. And I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Today! is more commercial than Pet Sounds, which is more commercial than Smile. It's just the sound of the time, and to be honest it's that more 'left of center' sound that made me, as a young 'experimental' musician, get into The Beatles and The Beach Boys to begin with.

Unless I totally missed the boat and we already knew this, did anybody notice that that link lists the track times for the 7" singles?
- Disc 8 - 1 Heroes and Villains Part One - 3:08 2 Heroes and Villains Part Two - 4:18 - Disc 9 - 1 Vega-Tables - 3:49 2 Surf's Up - 4:12
Heroes Part 1 clearly isn't the 'album mix' according to disc one, and neither Part 1 or 2 match up exactly with the general bootleg assumptions parts 1 and 2, though 1 is close enough to the 3 minute 'alternate mix'. Together they are, however, nearly the exact length of the "sections' on disc 1, and taking into account the inexactitude of timing vinyl, are probably (possibly?) the same thing.

Ug, after exhausting all my other outlets, I guess I'll have to think up a pun...
Please Brian, Make sure the tape isn't running when you go on your coke-fueled rampages.
Not too bad...

For lack of anything better to do till I have a job, the last couple days I've been cutting and pasting and putting together the sessions as per The Real Beach Boy's list...curse Brian for doing the easy stuff first, labeling and separating Look and Wind Chimes was easy, but once you get to Cabinessence this has become a full-time job...I finished up to Heroes and Villains and have immediately started dragging my feet because I know that's going to be madness, maybe I should just wait till the box comes out...

Well, after quick search I was able to find the 'Musical Comedy' version of H&V...it's just track 2 from the Odeon boot, a bunch of sections strung together. The quality's good and it starts off great, based on the early 'Alternate' version, which for my money remains the best pop song ever strung together. It annoyingly fades between some sections, but otherwise is better put together than a lot of 'extended' mixes of the song...if nothing else it sounds cleaner than the alternate version, so I might chop it up for my own use...or just wait, since I'm sure there'll be something even better sounding on the box.
