I sat next to two crazy 25 year olds who'd be people I'd expect to find at a Linkin Park concert,
Linkin Park are pretty damn passe these days. They haven't been cool since about 2003/04. I honestly have no clue what people of my generation listen to these days. I only picked Linkin Park because an upcoming concert of theirs was being advertised at Mohegan. Whenever I ask my friends what they listen to, I usually get responses like "I like all kinds of stuff," or "Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Adelle/Jay-Z." These guys looked like they were into Modern Rock and Roll. I can't believe even someone in this generation would stereotype people like that. or maybe your friends are all lame. there's plenty of members of this very message board in their twenties. Yes, because their colorful head bandanas and short sleeved body shirts showing off their muscles complete with matching slogans just screamed to me Katy Perry fan. Seriously, people can like whatever they want. I'm not calling that into question. I'm 23 and I love the Beach Boys. Some of my very close friends are into classic rock, and they're all in their early 20s too. But I work on a college campus, and most people I encounter, whenever I tell them I like the Beach Boys, don't even know how to respond. So yes, they are lame.

I just got my copy of Star Wars: Darth Plagueis in the mail. I'm up to chapter 3 and it's pretty good so far. But man, I've got to say that Luceno is the anti-Lucas when it comes to writing dialogue. This is the third Star Wars novel I've read by him, and there's such a stark contrast between what character's say in his books and the drivel that Lucas writes. And this is coming from somebody who liked most of the prequel trilogy.

Nope. I recorded the set list with my phone as the concert was going along. I didn't hear it played the second night, but then again, there's always the small possibility that I could have missed a song. I didn't have my phone out as much as other people in the audience. So it's possible, although unlikely, that I missed it. But I doubt that. This Whole World is my favorite Sunflower track. I'm pretty sure I would remember if they played it, and I'm almost positive that they didn't. But I'm sure they'll bring it back. This Whole World was a huge hit the first night, I can't imagine that they'll take it out for long.

Considering the first show at Mohegan Sun was utter perfection to my ears, I had a feeling that the second show might not be as polished as the first one. There were lots of places in last night's show where singers came in a split second late or flubbed a line here and there. Mike had this happen to him a number of times, but overall it wasn't anything too bad. Brian sounded good again, except for his lead on Do You Wanna Dance, which was ragged and off key. Sail on Sailor was a little spotty as well, and we all know Brian has trouble with that song.
The shows were incredibly powerful. Add Some Music with the band around the piano with Brian showed such synergy that still must exist among them. At the risk of dividing things along generations, 1960's and 1970's followers were less concerned about any errors, and more concerned that we heard such great classics (our classics) such as Sail On Sailor, Add Some Music, the SMiLE sampling, and I Just Wasn't Made for These Times or Cottonfields, which I think is such a neat song. Brian sounds great to us. I've been getting emails all day from "contemporaries" who were at the show, and who are more than happy with the concerts. They are delighted with Brian singing so forcefully at the piano. Most of us aren't looking for perfection. The effort of the performance, even if there are "mistakes" matters more. We find the show just perfect. It is such an emotional experience, perhaps at this point in our lives, having lived alongside Carl's draft woes, as headlines, when we had friends who were also in the same boat, or that whole coming of age, in an age where young people questioned authority. We didn't call it "audacity" - we just lived it. Aye. I hear ya. I'm just nitpicking to be honest. Both shows were fantastic, and Brian sounded great in both. I just felt like the first night was one of the greatest performances I've seen from any of them, and was kind of going into the second show with the mentality that it might not be as good. But it was excellent.

A few more reactions:
Having Add Some Music open the second set is not only sentimental, but also really powerful. Having silence for ten minutes during intermission and then getting hit over the head with all 5 Beach Boys plus Jeff singing in perfect harmony really blows the audience away. Talk about tone setting!
I think the slow moving silhouettes of dancing girls that they broadcast over the Jumbo-Tron behind the stage during Do You Wanna Dance doesn't work. It doesn't match the uptempo nature of the song, and is kind of awkward to listen to and watch at the same time.
During Forever, the two 25 year olds I was sitting next to screamed out "Where's Uncle Jessie!?" Apparently in one Full House episode, the writers wrote a storyline where Jessie claimed to have written the song Forever. I never knew that. Luckily for all the hardcore Beach Boys fans in the audience, John Stamos wasn't anywhere to be seen last night.
Overall the show was awesome, and I enjoyed the second night as much as the first. But because the first show at Mohegan Sun was just so perfect, I have a feeling I'll be comparing all future concert to that one for a long time.

Al got lost on Cottonfields. He sang certain verses a bit too many times, but luckily the band kept playing along with whatever he kept repeating and covered up the mistake pretty well.
The crowd last night was a bit younger than that of the first show. Still mostly people above age 60, but I had a better view of the audience tonight from where I was sitting, and there were definitely more people under 25 there compared to the first show. I sat next to two crazy 25 year olds who'd be people I'd expect to find at a Linkin Park concert, not a Beach Boys concert. They were definitely enthusiastic, acting crazy and dancing throughout the show. They even brought their own personal beach ball that they inflated.
Mike dedicated Surfer Girl to all the mothers out there for Mother's Day. His banter was the same as it was the previous night, right down to the smallest of details.
When Kiss Me Baby was over, Al mentioned that they hadn't played that one in concert in a long time. Hopefully they keep it.
It was surprising when the band started playing Good Vibrations further up in the set list. They sang it much better than they did the first night. Unfortunately, Kokomo still seemed pretty lifeless when the band came back on stage for the encore. I think that was still the worst performance of the night.

Alright, the show didn't sell out, and there were some sections in the balcony that were empty or pretty close to empty, but the arena still seemed pretty full. The set list for the second half was pretty much the same as last night, except that they moved Good Vibrations up from the encore into the second set.
Second set: Add some music California dreamin Sloop John B. WIBN IJWMDTT Forever Sail on sailor Heroes and Villains In my room All this is that God only knows TWGMTR Good vibrations California Girls All summer long Help Me Rhonda Rock and Roll Music Do you wanna dance Surfin USA

Is it weird I like this version slightly more than the released one?
No. I prefer the unreleased single version from Endless Harmony as well. I love the added falsetto, but I do think that Brian made the right choice by taking it out of the commercial single release. I agree that it might not have sat too well with some people who were part of the anti-doo wop movement that was growing, and it might not have charted as successfully.

Scott M, glad to see you agreed Brian was great on You're So Good To Me. I also went to UConn, Class of '87. Go Huskies – although next year will be a little tough.
Yeah, Calhoun should have just retired after last year's championship. That was my senior year (I'm a grad student now), and luckily I got to see that team in person. I had such a good time at last night's concert, my family was thinking of buying tickets to tonight's show as well. But we can't find good enough seats, so I guess we're skipping it. Edit: Err, scratch that. Looks like I'm going to tonight's concert too.

A few more things about last nights show:
During Be True to Your School, the main Jumbo-Tron showed the UConn logo, which got everybody in the audience cheering. I'm currently a student at UConn, and given the general age of the audience (60+), it's likely that I was the only UConn student in the audience. Mike Love became aware during the number that somebody had programmed the screen to show the UConn logo during the number, and referred to it as "sabotage." That really made me smile, hearing one of my musical heroes mentioning my school by name during the concert.
Doing Add Some Music around the piano with Brian was, like many posters have pointed out, touching. It was really sentimental and nice to see. It was mostly Brian and Al singing the lead, with the rest of the group doing background vocals.
Jeff Foskett sounded particularly whiny during TWGMTR. There were a few rough spots during that song. However, Jeff sounded better than I ever remember him sounding the rest of the night.
I think Brian's best vocal was You're So Good to Me. That's really a track that stands out to me.
Dave's guitar solos were awesome. He added some nice touches to a couple of numbers. He was really excellent.

OK, just got back from the show. A few thoughts.
No I didn't get any video. This was a historic concert and getting tickets to it happened to be a birthday present from my father. Given those circumstances, I wasn't overly concerned about viewing any portion of the concert from the lens of my iPhone or anything like that. I remember about a year ago at one Mike and Bruce show, I nearly got my head taken off by one neanderthal security guard who didn't take kindly to me trying to record a few songs with my camera. I wasn't about to relive that experience. However, plenty of people in the audience did have their camera phones out, so I'm sure that some audience recordings will start to trickle out soon.
The band was in top form tonight. Mike and Brian sounded particularly amazing. I saw both of them at concerts last year, and I don't remember either of them sounding nearly as good as they did tonight. Al sounds spectacular, as he always does. David Marks took the lead on Hawaii and sounded good overall, although there were a few times I thought he sounded spotty. Bruce sounded okay, but out of all the original surviving Beach Boys, his voice is in the worst shape in my opinion. The backing band was incredible, like they always are, and I thought John Cowsill and Scott Totten blended nicely with Brian's band.
The set list was pretty much what I expected it to be, given what I've been reading on this board for the past few days. They did drop Come Go With Me from the first set, but other than that it was pretty much what they've been doing for the past couple of shows.
Brian's voice sounded AMAZING. He obviously has lost a lot of his range, but he still sounds like Brian. Tonight was the first night I actually heard bits of his old voice come through. It sounded sweet. I haven't heard sweetness coming from Brian's voice since the early 70s. But tonight it was there. But boy, did Brian look out of it when he wasn't singing. When he was actually given something to do on stage, he looked and sounded good. But during the long periods where he wasn't singing leads, he looked lost.
I loved the car suite at the end of the first set. Those are some of my favorite songs, and the crowd loved them! The band was at it's high points tonight singing those songs. Throughout most of the concert, the crowd seemed really into it. They were up on their feet, moving and dancing with the songs. The two exceptions were during Disney Girls and TWGMTR. The crowd seemed especially motionless during TWGMTR. I could only guess that a lot of people hadn't heard the song before. Mike did plug the new album, but not in an obvious way. He mentioned the song was off their new album by the same name, but didn't mention anything about a release date, so it wasn't like it was an obvious advertisement or something.
There was NO autotune, at least to my ears. I paid special attention to Brian's vocals just to see if I could spot anything weird going on, and honestly I didn't hear anything suspicious. There were three mega Jumbo-Trons in the arena that had live feeds of what was happening on stage, and I had a pretty good view of the stage anyway without them. I could see and hear everything that was going on perfectly. There was no delay between any of Brian's vocals and what was being broadcast on those screens, and honestly I didn't hear or see anything that might suggest pitch correction was being used. I asked my father, who has been going to concerts for nearly 50 years, if he had heard anything suspicious, and he told me no. He didn't think there was any live autotuning or pitch correction.
During the encore, the band didn't sound as good for some reason. Maybe they were just tired by that point, but Mike and Al clearly were distracted when they were preforming Kokomo and Fun Fun Fun. A little boy, maybe around 8 years old, went up in front of the stage during the encore and was motioning for Mike to sign an autograph for him, while the concert was still going on. Security didn't intervene, but the boy should of just waited until after the show. Right after Fun Fun Fun ended, Mike finally gave in and signed one of the beach balls that was being tossed around in the audience for him.
