1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I rolled my own SMiLE on: February 28, 2019, 09:04:28 AM
That's really funny how it comes down to just WC, Vega, and Fire! I think we are on to something here... (perhaps others might say on something instead!)

I don't have the box or two-fer anymore, so I don't recall how H&V ends on those. I tinkered a little more this morning and removed the barnshine from H&V and now it ends with that echoey / bubbly part at 2:06 which leads straight into IIGS. BAM! It was a boss move it turns out! I also took the barnshine out of the end of OMP  and removed that begining vocal part from CIFOTM. I feel like these cuts greatly improved the flow. I like barnshine just fine, but somehow I didn't like it in my mix.

I think I prefer the 88 mixes mostly too. I feel like a lot was tagged on to the 2011 mixes, but I think they really wanted a completed feel without considering what might be excess. I like 2011 enough, but I don't prefer it. It's all I have now, so I have to live with it.

Cheers for the response!
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - 2018/2019 Tour Thread - Postcards Storytellers Tour on: February 27, 2019, 05:56:05 AM
Al just posted this review of the Infinity Hall show to his Facebook profile:

http://facethemusicjr.wixsite.com/facethemusic/single-post/2019/02/20/Al-Jardine-E280A2-Original-Founding-Member-of-The-Beach-Boys

The article mentions the comments Al made that hint at a potential reunion tour:

“Before wrapping up, Jardine hinted at plans for a Beach Boys reunion in celebration of their 60th anniversary. Whether that will be a tour or televised special remains to be seen. Either way, it will be an event that no Beach Boy disciple should miss.”

I distinctly remember Al using the word “tour” when hinting at a potential reunion. He kept things purposely vague, but the word “tour” was used. My father attended the concert with me and after the show I asked him what his impressions of what Al hinted at were, and he heard and interpreted things exactly as I did. So it wasn’t just me.

Edit: The set list in the article isn’t accurate. Santa Anna Winds was not performed, Surfin’ USA was part of the encore (prefaced by Al, Matt, and Jeff impromptuly performing the intro of Nowhere Man), and Surfin Safari was the song performed after Luau.

Edit 2: Also Surfer Girl was performed after Surfin Safari. The set list was nearly identical to the one “Big Daddy” posted above for the Iridium, minus the two snippets he mentioned got performed at that show and plus the snippet of Nowhere Man I previously mentioned. That, and Surfin’ USA was performed in between In My Room and Help Me Rhonda.

Well, I hope this pans out! At the Minneapolis show, Al said that there was something in the works to record/tour a collaboration with Brian's daughters.

I went to the second night of the Minneapolis shows... The band was fantastic! Despite the minimalism of a trio, they really brought out the layers and textures well. These guys also all have excellent voices! I would vote Vega-Tables as as the highlight. They really channeled the SS version effectively. Matt also did an excellent Surf's Up. I was lucky enough to meet Al and Matt. They are extremely kind and down to Earth fellas. I really enjoyed speaking with them. Also, Al signed my shirt!

I think I've finally arrived at an approximation of a SMiLE depiction that feels like what I've been looking for. I'm not claiming you will too, but I wanted to share for fun...

I just used the 2 disc 2011 Sessions set, except GV where I used the 2012 mono.

1) Prayer
2) H & V (the part 1 version. AKA Smiley twofer version. AKA the three score and jive version)
3) I'm In Great Shape (literally just that. No Barnyard. No I Wanna Be Around / Workshop.)
4) My Only Sunshine / OMP
5) DYLW?
6) Cabin Essence
7) Wonderful
Cool CIFOTM
9) GV (the standard version without the extra tags)
10) Wind Chimes
11) Vega-Tables (I still feel a little conflicted that I didn't use the Cornucopia version, but it's a little too sparse)
12) The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow) (I cut out the HV intro)
13) Surf's Up
14) You're Welcome

Look, this won't work for everyone. It works for me, and it's been a lot of laughs putting it together. It runs about 37 minutes and I feel a sense of completion after listening to it several times. I want to thank fellow Twin Cities resident soniclovenoize for the inspiration after he dropped his latest version for Xmas. It put me back into the mindset of further exploring what a completed 1967 version might have sounded like. I think I found what I was looking for!

Has anyone heard the Durrie Parks acetate of IIGS? The way it's described is much different than what the box has and I am curious if anyone could verify this.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Lorren Daro Thread on: January 30, 2015, 10:41:12 AM
In the end, if I were hypothetically an invited "Honored guest" (or an already established one being asked to return) to the SS forum, I certainly would think twice about accepting such invite.

I can't wait.

Lana Del Ray didn't make the cut  Undecided

Neither did Jeff Beck.

Mr. Cohen (or anyone who may have a sense of what happened),

There are a few SMiLE mysteries that I hope to better understand.

Did VDP quit in early March of 67?
Was it the plan for so much of March to be devoted to Carl's Tune X, or did Brian temporarily bail until April?
Did VDP return in early April, only to quit again?
Did Brian purposely remove VDP lyrics (three score and five, stripped the stalk, or changing He Gives Speeched to She's Goin Bald) because VDP quit? Or were they merely "evolutions" of Brian's whims?

If I am interpreting the SMiLE Sessions recording info correctly (per the accompanying box set book), it would seem that VDP was present through the early March HV sessions and returned briefly for the April Vega sessions. Was this intended, or did he quit, change his mind briefly, and quit again? If he quit, did it derail Brian, thus Tune X was fiddled with while waiting for Brian to return?

Any insight is greatly appreciated in advance.

If you feed Brian a steady diet of steak & birthday cake served by a pretty young girl, and keep the jukebox stocked with Spector songs, he'll be anything you want for as long as you like. Fact.  Grin
Ka-ching!  Which sums up the bulk of "pro-choicers."  Go with the flow?   LOL  I would assume its the pro-life people who've put thought into it.

This sounds like Sandbox talk. Just sayin'...
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: would anyone buy a 'bruce johnston' book? on: November 25, 2013, 09:42:26 AM
No. Buying a Bruce Johnston book is the equivalent of reading about the guy who sat next to the class clown (and took notes).
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why do The Beach Boys have anonymous bandmembers to the public at large? on: November 25, 2013, 05:58:31 AM
Do people think Grateful Dead fans are hicks?

From my experience, yes. A lot of mystical romantics who live in rural areas seem to be their biggest fans (ie: Madeline Island Wisconsin or Grand Marais Minnesota). Second to those folks seems to be white corporate sales reps acting like they are loose and free (but really are controlling sociopaths). Last, they seemed to attract swingers and perverts hoping to get some action (under the guise of really liking GD concerts). Yes, these are my experiences with GD fans. I apologize if this offends any GD fans in advance.  angel

OK, by piecing all the posts together, it looks like we have ~150 items, easily enough for a new box set.

I leave it to the true experts as to how it should be sequenced...
If this were ten years ago, I would wager that a group of like-minded folks would collaborate to make this into a project (remember Project SMiLE anyone?). With all of the blogs and message boards drying up, I don't this this would come to fruition now.  Sad

I asked a similar question on another thread about some SMiLE-related mp3's that I thought I used to have and I guess either never existed or no one on this board is familiar with. See: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16727.0.html No replies  Cool Guy

Some time ago, I had an external hd crap out. I am wondering what others would do if they had SOT source tape, UM 16-17, Vigo, HV 1 & 2, HV Sessions 2 on a drive and lost it? Things I've already tried: checking the web for these on blogspots (most now inactive for 2+ years ie: LZ, Warnackey, Triffids, etc), emailed warnackey directly (no response), etc (I'm pretty sure I have exhausted the potential of the web on this). Any advice/insights would be appreciated. The lesson I have learned is to make silvers out of everything and have multiple back up devices!

I decided to email Capitol. Their email is writeus@hollywoodandvine.com and telephone number is 323-462-6252 if any one else has complaints that they would like to share. Also, here is there yelp page (with 1 whopping review from 2008) if you simply want to publicly complain: http://www.yelp.com/biz/capitol-records-los-angeles or simply leave low ratings on Amazon or wherever you purchased the item from that allows for public comments.

I apologize in advance for sounding like a crank. I fault Capitol / Universal in the small picture and the degradation of quality manufactured goods in the big picture. Specifically for music, many/all (not many left) of the majors release archives as cash grabs. The product is treated with beefed up volume, compression/limiting, NoNoise, etc. and mass produced by low-bid manufacturers that have little quality control. The result is clipped songs, mastering errors, glitches and whatever other issues that degrade the consumption experience (at least for me). The companies do not care because: fans will still buy products, sound quality is a lax issue (thanks to mp3, portable devices, and the decline of interest in home audio systems). The company will get paid and the retail outlets will be left holding the bag for damaged goods (easy for a giant like Amazon, not so for indie outlets).

I avoided MIC specifically because EMI gave me a chincy booklet that was poorly assembled with my Beatles Mono box (not a pirate copy) and TSS was delivered with glitches on three discs thanks to the case the discs are housed in. My point: anyone pissed about this box should take it up with the company who is releasing it. They need to hear how shabby their products are.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: All things TSS packaging, presentation and booklet etc on: October 23, 2013, 07:22:15 AM
I realize this reply is about two years late, but it still bothers me... I think that the folder that the five cds are housed in is a really poor design. While it certainly looks cool, three of the five cds had digital clicking on the last track (disc  four actually had clicking on the last five tracks!). In short, I spent $140 to get a damaged product! I was able to make de-clicked copies luckily, but I wish it didn't come to that! My theory is that the cds rub/scrape on the backing. Looks good, wrecks the cds. Not cool...

I was at the MN show on Saturday. I hope this is ok to post thoughts here? Well I'll do it anyway.
Setlist: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/brian-wilson/2013/weesner-amphitheater-apple-valley-mn-13c6fd25.html

General notes:
Brian was really engaged, smiled a lot, and sang well.
Al sounded great. His voice has held up well.
David was awesome. Great guitar player!
Band was pretty tight overall. Set 1 really kicked ass. Set 2 and encores were also good, but not as smoking as Set 1.

If anyone has any specific questions about the show, I can try and answer them.

That is an edit of Brian's, from his December 1966 compilation tape. Seven selections on the tape in total.

Did this tape circulate amongst traders ever? It does not appear anywhere that I can see (although neither do the Prokopy's tapes for that matter). It's awesome that it is so easy to find SoT, Vigotone, fan mixes, etc. in the "digital age", but there is a certain nostalgia I find in the old word of mouth/ cassette/ US Mail days that I prefer.

It does circulate.

If one were to parse this together from available sources, is this how it would look?

Our Prayer Alternate mono mix with cuts (mono) (0:58)- Vigo
Wonderful 1966 mono mix (mono) (2:09)- Vigo
Wind Chimes 1966 mono mix (mono) (2:22)- Vigo
CIFOTM Bridge, unknown take (mono) (0:50) - Secret Smile
CE Verse/chorus/tag vocal overdub (mono) (2:25) – Secret Smile
CIFOTM 2nd acetate mix (mono) (1:41)- Vigo
DYLW Parts 1-4, mono mix, from acetate (mono) (3:36)- Vigo
CE Chorus/tag vocal overdub (mono) (1:46)- Secret Smile
