1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys references on new Panic! At The Disco track, \ on: July 28, 2019, 11:27:10 PM

That’s the only album of theirs that I can listen to. I may be a millennial, but after that album, I only like the songs “Death of a Bachelor” and “Impossible Year” because of the Sinatra style.

No love for A Fever You Can Swear Out? The structures on some of those songs are wicked good. The arrangements are pretty good too, much less organic than Pretty.Odd. but honestly, not a slight as every song on that record has great textures.

Death of a Bachelor is a distant third but yeah, those first two are classics that hold their ground.

Does anybody know of which “Shortnin’ Bread” rendition that Brian was most familiar with?

If it wasn't from hearing Audree (or someone else he knew) singing it, I'm guessing it's the version by The Andrews Sisters. The UK vocal group The Viscounts did a rocking version in 1960 but I doubt whether it got heard in the States. Everything else is too old, too new or too different!

Dang, was hoping for a more definitive answer! The version by the Andrew Sisters is the one I’m most familiar with, but I thought there must be another that I’ve overlooked as I haven’t quite designated it “the greatest song in the world” yet... (that said, it is infectious--do I get to keep my BW points?  Razz) That Viscounts version is rockin’ though! Perhaps Alice Cooper knows which version Brian loved...or (past-tense) knew...possibly the slate has been wiped clean through years of therapy  LOL

Hearing it might be Dennis definitely caused my ears to further prick up at that section. Regardless of whether or not it is him, I'm more aware/appreciative of the texture of the vocal at that point Grin (I think it being Dennis is a possibility)

Hey guys, there's a part of the Smile Sessions where Brian maps out a bass vocal and does a real low note - like so low (for the era) that it's almost debatable whether it was him (I think Mike was there with him? I was 80% sure it was Brian) Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I think it may have been a version of Wonderful, or perhaps a Love to Say Dada session. Bonus points if you can name the note  Grin

And "Love is a Woman" is about Mike Love's issues with gender identity.
I don't think Brian ever told Mike what "Love is a Woman" was about.

"Mona" = "Moaner". Get with it people!

Still think "honking down the highway" is an allusion to ejaculation also, especially with Al taking it "one inch at a time" and all.

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / BRIAN WILSON Q & A / Did you oversee a mono mix of the Friends album? on: January 25, 2015, 03:33:20 PM
Hey Brian, I was wondering if an unreleased mono mix of the Friends album exists - the mono single rocks my world!

Regards,
James S.

Don't undersell it guys, it's pretty clear that it's a slice of life modular masterpiece.

is there a higher resolution scan of this floating around? It's much better than the reissue artwork.

Excellent thread title.

Agreed. You can really tell that I'm a virgin.

This discovery makes Al's version on A Postcard from California infinitely hilarious. Brian's resolved to playing this gag till the grave - I love it.
18  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / "Honkin' Down the Highway" is a euphemism for ejaculating into a vagina on: November 20, 2014, 05:58:00 PM
Suddenly Al's assertion that he's taking it "one little inch at a time until we're feeling fine" makes a lot more sense, as does his cheeky little piece of meta-commentary where he asserts that he's got a "way with girls" with a wink and grin. Brian played his ultimate practical joke when he unleashed a record with such a bizarre euphemism for honking down a highway as a single. I bet he loved how he got not only Al Jardine but Billy Hinsche to sing it Grin

Are there any instances of Brian composing in a minor key?
I think someone mentioned that the chorus to H&V is in a minor key, but other than that...
