God bless the likes of Brian Wilson, a man who’s had more then his own fair share of demons in his lifetime, I hope he is truly happy. (On a sidenote, its quite eye-opening for me personally to realise I’m now only a year younger than he was when he wrote the music for Pet Sounds) I look forward to seeing him perform on Sunday. (and next month when I'm in the States)

I only wrote this post for myself, but I also thought i'd post it here. and 'wouldn't it be nice' to hear other talk about this album for once.

It was 50 years ago tomorrow, May 16th 1966. On that day The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds. Many consider it among the greatest albums of all time. I happen to include myself in that group. It just has an emotional resonance to it that is almost hard for me to describe with getting a bit misty eyed. Melodramatically, in many ways, its the album thats saved my life on a few occasions. Songs that have given me hope, songs that have made me think about my past and future, where it is I’m headed etc.  



Sometimes i’ve just wanted to go away for a while, or when I was living away at Uni, I just wanted to go home. I’ve felt so out of step with people in my own age group that i’ve wanted to leave my degree. At its most simplest, sometimes I just feel very sad. For someone dealing with depression and anxiety. This album has been my closest friend at times when I’ve just wanted the ground to swallow me whole.

Listening to Pet Sounds can sometimes be a very melancholy experience, in a certain mindset. But it is also very comforting. I’m sure other fans feel the same way, many of us will cling to the deeper, more seemingly meaningful side of the music. For certain rough patches, it can tear your heart out. But afterwards it can also give you a new perspective on life’s experiences. All I can say is, music can heal better than almost anything else. It can make you feel alive even at your most destructive. Pain doesn’t go away, but as long as you’ve got a heart and soul, you can always pick up the pieces and carry on.

The entirety of "All I Wanna Do". That song is other-worldly. Probably Mike's crowning achievement in the group.

Right next to Big Sur (4/4 Version) as Mike's shining moment IMO!

Y'know, I've realised after the last couple of days that this won't really effect my enjoyment of TLOS and the likes of One Kind Of Love too much. The reason being that whenever He wrote those songs he was almost always trying to channel Brian. So it's hard to associate the likes of Midnights Another Day with Scott particularly, even if that is his voice in the Demo. I understand it's still far too soon to talk about this type of thing, (and perhaps a bit inconsiderate) but I didn't want to start a new thread just to say it. The music will recover, Scott's life will not. Hopefully the victim, and their families will get the compensation they need. That's all I've got left to say at this point.

Sweet Insanity is Brian at his purest and most eccentric. It fills my ears with some very catchy melodies. Not to everyone's liking, of course. I put my mp3 player on the speakers at work one nite and a manager turned it off cause the song that was playing (Brian/Thank You) was too weird Lol.

I found it online like 5 yrs ago when I was getting seriously into Brian and the Boys. Some of it sounded a bit garish and very much of its time. Most of it tho became favorites, like the raucous blasts that are Hotter (luv the surf guitar licks during the chorus) and Love Ya.

Fun to listen to the 2 different mixes and see what was changed.

Oh man, that's my favourite song on the album! Haha. I think its got about 8-10 tracks that would have made a fantastic sequel to the s/t album.

I can't help it! Something about that 80s sounding production mixed with Brian's 80s/90s voice is irresistible! Where were you when you first discovered it, and where does it stack up in the solo canon?

I honestly think this has some of Brian's best solo material to this day. I particularly love the likes of 'Concert Tonight', 'Thank You (Brian)', 'Water Builds Up', 'Spirit of Rock 'N' Roll', 'Don't Let Her Know (She's An Angel)'. Much more endearing and completely Brian than almost anything on No Pier Pressure.

Smart Girls is of course awful and embarrassing but I love the novelty factor of it all. "I love hips and legs and breasts!"

I think if they released official versions of Sweet Insanity and The Wilson-Paley sessions they would honestly both be in my top 5 solo releases.

*I think some years ago a switch must have went off in my brain when I discovered I loved essentially everything Beach Boys/Brian Wilson related with a few exceptions (SIP of course) I even somewhat dig Salute Nascar, please call for help.

I almost choked on my breakfast from laughter when I read that the La-la-la's in The Last Song sound like they're taunting us.

God, stuff like this makes me very glad the whole Landy business is so far back in the past. That was a great article, thanks for sharing.

I would like to be proven wrong and have him deliver something good, I'm sure we all would. Hopefully he's got people with him, ready to say 'no' if needed. I hope he can rein it in a bit and keep the references to a minimum!

I think all of us are still trying to wrap our heads around this foul situation. While Its true that perhaps some of our posts could be characterised as 'overreacting', (as well as the article) there is still no real way of excusing his actions. He may not be a 'monster', but he has still hugely let down his friends, family, fans and especially the victim. Some of us have friends or family who may have been in these types of situations, which makes it particularly hard to forgive. Especially considering the DNA and video evidence that has surfaced.

It is almost guaranteed the victim will be suing Bennett and the hotel for substantial damages.   That will be another element of justice.

To be honest, she deserves a fortune, doesn't get more clean cut then "raped in the hallway on camera".  Hell the place may go bankrupt, who would ever stay there again?p

Sorry to bring this up, but could Brian or the promotor be sued or counter sued in a case like this? Completely different situation but I remember The Who settled with the victims families after the Cincinnati tragedy in 79.

I'm pretty certain thats not likely in any circumstances, especially since as it doesn't seem plausible that any of them knew until after the situation had already happened. If so, Brian's band could also counter-sue for slander against the group.

(To make some levity of a very dark situation, it wouldn't be a Beach Boys thread unless we brought up suing or counter suing!)

Must be very tough for the band at this time i'd imagine. (Certainly the victim most of all) How someone who's been apart of such, sweet life affirming music can stoop to that level is quite hard to wrap my head around.

and even if people thing he might have, there is a complete lack of evidence on all accounts other than the shooter's. Whose accounts of his death comes across as quite flimsy and untrustworthy imo.

Scott's situation is a completely different thing entirely, with video and dna evidence.

Should we consider moving this to the sandbox? He maybe an associate of Brian's but I don't like the idea of it being linked to The Beach Boys/Brian discussion. If that makes sense.

As far as anyone outside of the band is aware of, he was just a bit player who just happened to be in his band, nothing more, nothing less. But part of me assumes (hopes) that Brian might not even be aware of the implications of this. Since we know that Brian doesn't really use the internet, they might have decided not to tell him in case of causing him stress, particularly during a heavy touring schedule.

Ahhh...but it IS.  The victim was sloshed.  No excuse BUT she wasn't able to lookout for her own well being.  If she'd been sober this likely wouldn't have happened because she wouldn't have let it.  Not her fault.  Just a fact.  Perhaps Scott might have thought twice too.  We'll never know.  But to let booze off as if it played no part in this is what?  Way too politically correct for me.

But the worrying thing for me is that the victim stated having no memory of Scott all the night before. So it's pretty heinous of him to take advantage considering the state she was presumably in. Particularly in such a horrific and tacky manner.

I mean, this is pretty damning:

I was actually getting ready to download the Lucky Old Sun demos when I came across the news. I'm not sure i'll actually be able to listen to them now, considering his level of involvement in the project. What an absolute waste of a great musicians talents.

It's extremely disheartening that this was happening on Brian's tour, in the same building the band members were presumably staying in! Ugh..
