1  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: RIP Hall & Oates on: February 02, 2024, 03:46:31 PM
Randy Bachman is currently touring as Bachman Turner Overdrive - without Fred Turner, or any other former members of BTO.
Will Daryl tour as Hall & Oates?  LOL

Really? Last I knew, Fred, Rob Bachman, and Blair Thornton were BTO, with a guy named Randy Murray playing Randy Bachman's parts, and that Fred and Randy also briefly toured as just "Bachman-Turner".

I'm just finding out about this. it's somewhat surprising, considering "Turner" is in the band's name, but that group has a complicated enough history as it is and the other "legacy members" are onboard with it, which I assume was key to making Randy's BTO tour happen. I think this is just going to be reality for a lot of older groups moving forward. After all, Lynyrd Skynyrd is still touring without any "classic" members, all but one of whom (non-founding drummer Artimus Pyle) have died. It's weird, but as long as audiences understand what they're paying for ahead of time, I can't really complain about it.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: LoCash Wrote + Recorded New Song ‘Beach Boys’ With the Actual Beach Boys on: March 04, 2022, 07:00:08 AM
I think the "what damages the legacy" debate is a non-starter. I think one either gets or doesn't get it. Nothing much (barring some Billy Cosby/Michael Jackson-level scandal) is going to like literally bring down the BB legacy, and even a scandal of that order probably wouldn't since the BBs are a group and not a single person.

It's simply a question of what adds or subtracts to it. This track can only subtract, but probably not a great deal. This track will surely quickly fall into obscurity. I'd have to look back, but I don't think I even invoked any ideas of the band's "legacy" regarding this Locash track. I think other things (a few Mike gig choices of recent years, the clusterf**k ending of the 50th anniversary, that '88 Rock Hall speech, etc.) are far more damaging to the band's legacy.

My criticism of this track has been entirely in the here and now. It's just awful music on every level. Even viewed simply as *product*, it's bad. This act doesn't even seem to be an A-lister within this country sub-genre.

Did Locash track down Mike Love on Cameo or something? This smells much more like that than some kind of inspired collaboration.

I'm not saying Mike's the only guy in the music industry with a ton of side-hustles and whatnot. But I don't think it's crazy to be a little depressed that he'll sign up for stuff like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrtoQ0e5hoQ

And this Locash track is the musical guest star equivalent of agreeing to do what's in that video.

Like, I'd *love* to see the requests for collaborations and guest spots that are *turned down* by Mike....

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, and that's fine in this case. I don't think this track subtracts at all. I suppose it's largely going to come down to whether or not you like the music. And I think it's fine. Also, for what it's worth, I haven't really seen any of Mike's gig choices in recent years as problematic.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: LoCash Wrote + Recorded New Song ‘Beach Boys’ With the Actual Beach Boys on: March 03, 2022, 11:02:53 AM
The version with Mike and Bruce doesn't drop until tomorrow, but having heard the original, I think it's fine. It probably would have been stronger had they NOT sampled the "I Get Around" chorus. But, this will be FAR far from the worst thing Mike and Bruce have ever done, especially because I'm assuming they just threw their vocals on top of the first version. I'm not going to go out of my way to criticize the song. It's not worth it. And no, this doesn't diminish the band's legacy. Heck, this song is at least a more sincere venture into Country Music than "Stars and Stripes."

I have no affinity for country music, but I can't fathom there's anything more "sincere" about this track than the stuff on "Stars and Stripes." This uber-autotuned dude-bro stuff is less sincere than a beer commercial.

Yeah I don't see how anyone could think that Willie Nelson's lead vocal on 'Warmth of the Sun' is somehow less sincere than a song that is an unintentional caricature of every mainstream bro-country song that's been recorded for the last 15 years. But that's just my opinion.

As for The Beach Boys image being tarnished by this - I think this is just yet another small blip added to the list of "seriously?" moments that keeps piling up every year. I think I just need to resign myself to the fact that The Beach Boys will forever be associated with Uncle Jessie, Trump, supporting Trophy Hunting, lawsuits, fighting...and however you personally feel about any of these topics - none of these things should have happened (and it's not just Mike's fault, but every band member who did things to mess things up along the way). Just for the sake of defending Mike we don't need to pretend that this band hasn't done anything to alter their image for the worse. Nor do we need to pretend that their image is completely untouchable.

We currently are 3 months into this 60th anniversary year and the most memorable thing to happen is The Beach Boys name being tethered to a song about John Deeres, Rednecks, and Cuervo. I guess for some fans that is something to celebrate, for the rest of us, I think the Boys can do better than this.

This LOCASH song is a country song by a country band. "Stars and Stripes" was The Beach Boys needlessly remaking their old songs with country singers, thereby producing inferior versions of those songs.

As for The Beach Boys legacy and its true connection (if any) with this song, it does basically nothing one way or another, in the sense that it is not a Beach Boys product/project. I understand that it has arguably been misrepresented as such, but that doesn't change the facts. I don't think it's fair to lump solo projects into any band's legacy. I strongly dislike Paul McCartney's "Driving Rain" album, but the disc does nothing to impact The Beatles' legacy or anything like that.

As someone who has only begun to appreciate various types of country music over the last ten years or so, I can appreciate this song for the fun little ditty that it is. And yes, I do find it more sincere than "Stars and Stripes" if only because it's a country act performing a country song as opposed to The Beach Boys pointlessly remaking old material with country artists, thereby producing inferior versions of those songs. To be clear, I understand not liking this type of music. But the song itself is not inherently bad.

6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - 2022 Tour Thread (Plus Archived 2018-2021) on: February 17, 2022, 08:44:33 AM
I don’t think Al needs the money, and maybe he was planning the ‘Family’ shows to support his friends after a tough 2 years, but I think the niche 3 person ‘Storyteller’ show he does is the only way to go.

It's noteworthy that this group is going to play Wilson Phillips music, since previous iterations didn't. Others here have noted the lack of ticket sales for this tour. I wonder if there would be a market for a "Wilson Phillips + Al Jardine" tour. Of course, if Al went that route, he would likely just use WP's band, thus negating potential "support" that he could give the Endless Summer Band, even though some folks have obviously been known to play with both acts.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love just announced a \ on: October 08, 2021, 08:08:05 AM
There's a lot to unpack here. I'm somewhat surprised that Mike and Irving believe enough folks would be attracted to an entire cruise centered around the touring band. Kiss has been pulling this sort of thing off for years now, but many of their fans are fanatical and, to be fair, they tend to put together solid supporting lineups on their Krusies. Def Leppard tried this a few years ago, and not nearly enough people bought tickets. Time will tell. This seems like a pretty lackluster way to celebrate the 60th, all things considered, so I would hope there really is something else in the pipeline. I don't see this as, "super cheesy," or necessarily, "damaging the band's legacy." I just don't understand the appeal of what is essentially a, "Mike Love Cruise."

On the one hand, I would hope McGrath would be allowed to play a set of his own rather than just singing a few numbers with Mike. After all, unlike Stamos, he's an accomplished musician in his own right. On the other hand, I don't see many of this cruise's likely customers being Sugar Ray fans.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Oh god on: June 16, 2021, 10:20:27 AM
I turned 4 in 1999 when David left the group again and it was reduced to two actual Beach Boys, so I've been seeing publicity photos like this (featuring both actual Beach Boys and sidemen) for as long as I can recall. If anything, I appreciate when stuff like this is used. Depending on which Facebook show page you find, some gigs there are being promoted with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra album cover art. That's obviously misleading, to say the least.

This is a photo of exactly who you're going to see on stage at these gigs. It's honest. An argument could be made to only advertise with Mike/Bruce photos, but I understand why Mike uses these.

I've said this before, but The Beach Boys have obviously been in a weird position for a long time, in contrast to other oldies acts.

Kiss tours with founders/owners Paul and Gene, and two other guys. Those two guys are not mere sidemen. They are front and center and help out with lead vocals. They are promoted as Members of Kiss. They don't co-own the brand or anything like that, but they are presented to the public as more than just backup players. The same holds true for Lawrence Gowan (who sings DeYoung's songs for Styx), Arnel Pineda (Journey's singer), and many others. It's also worth noting that, in all three of these examples, the original members that these guys replaced are still alive.

On a slightly different note, you have the current touring Eagles. They have three actual Eagles and some backup players, but they also bring along two others to help sing lead vocals. Those two aren't always promoted as Eagles Members, but are instead billed separately (The Eagles with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill).

For a long time, and particularly since Al left, The Touring Beach Boys have had many musicians beyond Mike and Bruce acting in prominent roles onstage, getting their own "spotlight" moments, and helping out (to put it mildly) with lead vocals. Yet these musicians are never referred to as Members of the Beach Boys. It's an oddity that was probably mostly unavoidable once Mike got the right to use the band's name for tours, but not new recordings. Even if Mike wanted to start calling Tim Bonhomme a Beach Boy, he would probably get in trouble with the Company at that point.

The closest comparison to Mike's Beach Boys might be the Monkees. They tour with a large band, but only two people in that band (Dolenz and Nesmith) are referred to as Members of the Monkees. Of course, they're also the only two who sing leads at the shows.

This is yet another reason why it's going to be weird if Bruce retires before Mike. You'd wind up with a "Beach Boys" touring operation with only one person who can legally call himself a Beach Boy. Even Mario Corbino can legally call himself a Temptation, and he's only been with that group since last year.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 60th Anniversary celebration and definitive doc to be announced soon on: June 02, 2021, 01:09:45 PM
It's hard to think about what this new documentary could say that hasn't already been said. I guess the biggest value is the fact that the information itself is being presented on a major streaming service and, therefore, getting wider exposure. As a big Beatles fan, I didn't learn a whole lot of "new" information from "Eight Days a Week," but having that documentary on Hulu undoubtedly does a great deal of good for their brand. The same goes for the tribute concert. For better or worse, I don't have much interest in hearing others' interpretations of the Boys' music. On the other hand, the 2001 Brian tribute gave us some good performances. Obviously, the greatest thing that could come from a tribute concert would be a finale performance by the Boys themselves. I don't expect a tour by any means, but considering how sour the 2012 split was, coming back on stage together one last time would be nice.

I recall Al mentioning in an interview that he was working in the furniture industry, but that he might be called upon if/when the Endless Summer Band is revived.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: March 03, 2021, 06:53:51 AM
I just don't like the tour name. Understand that it may be good for the Box Set coming out, but really that Box is material by the original Beach Boys, only 1 of whom(ok 2 if you count Bruce) currently tour in this line up. It's very misleading to me. This is the kind of stuff I was hoping the sale of the name would stop. Typical Mike Love.

If Mike and Bruce are going to use the Beach Boys name to tour, I would rather they name said tour after a Beach Boys product (like this boxset) than a Mike solo album
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: California Music Presents Add Some Music on: March 02, 2021, 07:26:21 AM
Apologies if this was already known to folks; this release was certainly news to me, nor have I seen discussion of it here or around the internets. I neglected to copy/paste a tracklist included with the proper music link (I did not see one on the amazon page as of today but I only glanced). I'm not sure what to make of three different versions of the title cut. Looks to be remakes a-plenty, though. I'm still interested, regardless.

We knew about the title track (or one of them at least  Grin), but I believe the rest is new.

My best guesses, plus some process of elimination.

1. Add Some Music To Your Day - Mike, Al, Bruce, David Marks, Carnie and Wendy Wilson
2. Ram Raj - Mike (from UTL; maybe if we’re lucky it will be without AutoTune?)
3. Jenny Clover - Al (is it the same mix as the single, or has Al’s indecisiveness* graced us once again?)
4. She Believes In Love Again - Bruce (wasn’t there a rumor he re-recorded this for Songs from Here & Back or for a 2007 EP?)
5. Long Promised Road - David Marks?
6. Friends - Matt Jardine or Jeff Foskett?
7. Get Together
8. Golden State - David Marks or Jeff Foskett?
9. Add Some Music To Your Day - vocals only?
10. Add Some Music To Your Day - original version? or backing track only?

*I’m just as bad, though, so I shouldn’t be talking - or typing.

Really looking forward to this AND Bruce resurrects an old band name (How original  LOL)

Agreed. Couldn’t they have just called it Add Some Music?

At one point, Bruce talked about "She Believes" appearing on TWGMTR, so it could be at least partially sourced from 2011/2.

It sounds lovely. I think we all wish Brian had been involved, but his absence doesn't have to detract from the music itself. I noticed he (rightfully) is in the "With Great Appreciation" section in the music video's credits.
14  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Worst live act you've ever seen in person. on: February 11, 2021, 05:59:48 AM
Blue Oyster Cult, 2014. They played a free show in a park which totaled nine songs, plus an instrumental jam, and no encore. Considering the band's age and the fact that I paid nothing, I wasn't expecting to be blown away. But the guys seemed so tired and bored, like they really didn't want to be there.
