76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Specific Beach Boys Musical Moment That Is Kicking Your Ass Right Now on: August 08, 2010, 12:17:00 AM
I've been practicing some Beach Boys songs on bass and what's been kicking my ass currently is the ending of "Pom Pom Play Girl".
The way the chords change at the end is so odd to me, but so so cool. Still trying to figure it out!

You can now pre-order the album on iTunes with a bonus track - "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off"
(from Brian's Facebook page)

This sounds cool! Wonder if it's a duet with Taylor?

Yesterday I was listening to the clips of BWRGershwin on Amazon and the "S'Wonderful"
and "Summertime" clips were both in my head

Hopefully they'll release the two bonus tracks on iTunes in the near future...

Sorry if this has been asked already, but will this re-release be remastered?
Thanks!

On the Good Vibrations topic:
Organ on GV - Organ on He Came Down

Heroes and Villains - I Can Hear Music
Bass lines are fairly similar

Mountain of Love (though I know he didn't write it) - Little Children
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Van Dyke Parks Live in Columbus Ohio 9/24 on: July 15, 2010, 08:47:48 PM
Yes I will be there with a few friends of mine. I'm really interested to see what he'll perform, and who he'll perform it with, unless it'll just be a solo performance?

See you there!
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine and the Endless Summer Band in Long Island!!! on: July 14, 2010, 09:33:45 AM
Sounds like a great time! I still really want to see Al, he just hasn't performed close enough (yet anyway). I REALLY
want to see this band, especially since it's the same members from the 90s touring group. Was Richie Cannata there with Al
playing sax/flute?
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Disney album...what would you put on it and why? on: July 11, 2010, 05:08:35 PM
VDP arranged it if I'm not mistaken
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Disney album...what would you put on it and why? on: July 11, 2010, 04:38:24 PM
Definitely The Bare Necessities! A classic tune, and it has a Van Dyke Parks connection! Just a great song I think
would be a great fit.
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best Bass in a Beach Boys song? on: July 09, 2010, 09:05:01 AM
One of my favorite bass lines has always been Salt Lake City. Others include: Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, and The Little Girl I Once Knew.
Dance, Dance, Dance is wonderful and I love the feel of the bass in Don't Worry Baby. The line in Help Me Rhonda (Summer Days version) is killer,
so unique (and really hard to learn!!)

3 favorites:

That's Not Me
A Thing or Two
Busy Doin Nothin

Thats Not Me.    Yeah.    When I hear a tune and start playing air base..........to me, thats a good base line......and the drum rolls that go with it......killer

............................it usually takes Jamerson to get me playing air base.........who does Thats Not me?  Carol?

According to Wikipedia it's Carol (and Lyle Ritz on upright bass)

I love that bass line too. This was one of the first Beach Boys songs I learned how to take apart, learn the lines, and record
using a MIDI keyboard. Not as hip as Carol's playing though

Bueller? Bueller?

I'm thinking of going to his show in Ohio this fall. What music does he play? I'm curious
Thanks for any info!
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin Artwork on: June 27, 2010, 05:16:38 PM
Jazz albums usually had better cover art than musical contents.

Last time I checked, Kenny G isn't jazz.

 LOL (this is true)
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tracklisting for Brian's new album on: June 20, 2010, 11:20:42 AM
Again, I'll just put forth a proposition: you cannot petition the lord with prayer. Also, what say we wait until we actually hear the album before we start bitching.

Here! Here!

I'm loving the tracklist. I really cant wait to hear this album. Curious as to how Brian
arranged the material if he gives a jazz flavor to the songs or just goes in another direction.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian \ on: June 11, 2010, 06:02:38 PM
I have to admit that "Party!" is one of my favorite BBs-albums too. It's a cool little rock'n'roll record .

While I'm at it, I wanted to mention that the Beatles-covers on that album really stand up to the originals imo.

I agree with you on the Beatles covers, those are some of my favorite moments on the record especially "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"
Always thought Brian sounded like he was having fun on "Papa Oom Mow Mow" in most performances (and this recording) back in the
day. His voice was so full of energy on that one! (imo)
95  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian in Documentary about Mellotron on: May 18, 2010, 10:21:56 PM
Looks like a cool documentary. I always thought there was an "odd"/"mystical" sound in the backing track to California Girls in the left channel during the chorus. It sounds similar to strings, but not real strings. So maybe a Mellotron is on the record? I'm sure our experts here can shine light on the subject.  Smiley
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: surf guitar sounds in 'Here Today' on Pet Sounds on: May 18, 2010, 01:56:23 PM
You're right, Gurwood. It is the bass playing the lick. This is my favorite track from Pet Sounds. The bass line is one of my absolute favorites because
of the fact it goes in the higher register throughout (like Good Vibrations). While taking bass lessons this past year I learned that most bass players (at least in jazz)
like to use the higher register, especially when soloing. I don't know if this is something Carol (?) decided to do, or the way Brian wrote it (probably the latter). But I did notice
the surf guitar-esque sound in "Here Today". I don't know how it was put in, but it sounds great!

And here is the art! I hope you all like it. If not it can always be changed. I wanted a "sketch" feel to the cover so it's supposed to look like this.
Feel free to use it for your mp3 player/iTunes/iPod/iPhone/Zune/whatever is your player of choice, or to make into a CD if you choose to burn the tribute to disc.
The title of the album is "SmileySmile.Net presents Our Sweet Love - A Tribute to Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys"

I got the OK on the cover artwork. I just have to finish the back with the tracklisting this evening, and it should be up either tonight or tomorrow! Smiley

Sounds like a great idea!
I'll try to come up with something

Hey guys, sorry about lack of artwork. School work caught up to me. It will be here soon, hopefully. Wish me luck!
