At the end of the Clare and The Reasons set Van Dyke Parks came on for the last tune playing
piano on "He Needs Me" from the Popeye soundtrack, Clare sang lead. That was a real treat!

Very cool! I caught him in February in Portland & Seattle...no H&V though!  police

Is he playing any material off Song Cycle?

I don't think he played anything off of Song Cycle, but he did play material from Jump and Tokyo Rose
 Smiley

Sam_BFC - Yes! He sings it as a duet with Clare, it was great!

That would be correct! I saw Van Dyke Parks (with Clare and The Reasons - who are good too!) in Columbus two weeks ago and it was an excellent concert.
"Heroes and Villains" totally took me by surprise! He also tosses in a few other goodies along the way. The man's
performance is incredible to say the least. Enjoy the show!!

One of my all time favorite Beach Boys moments is at the end of the a capella break in Sloop John B where Brian
sings "WELL I", loved it since the first time I heard it. What amazes me is that Brian just totally re-arranged (re-imagined if you will Wink)
Sloop John B and made it into his own. That guitar lick will forever be in the back of my mind in any version of the song I might listen to.

'nuff from me..

My vinyl copy plays fine.  But, for all the hype surrounding vinyl, it still has a number of potential issues, including warps, clicks and pops, and other surface noise.  Although most of today's vinyl is pressed on thick 180 gram vinyl, my experience has been that the pressing quality of most vinyl today is just mediocre, and overall is not up to the standards of the best high quality audiophile stuff available in the 70s and 80s.  This could be due to the fact that few vinyl pressing plants are still around, and from what I've heard, they are running at capacity.

I have returned some recent vinyl purchases due to these issues, but ya gotta remember that vinyl, by its very nature, is far more prone to flaws than CDs.  However, the larger graphics are totally cool compared to the much smaller graphics found on CDs.

Check your BWRG disc for warps by looking at the disc from the side as it plays.   Mistracking due to warps is most pronounced at the outer edges of the vinyl, which is what you are experiencing.  Another issue could be your stylus tracking force is set too low.  If you have a stylus pressure gauge, check your tracking force to see if it is within the specified range, assuming you have paperwork indicating what that is.  Otherwise, if no warps seems to be apparent, try setting it a little higher to see if that solves the problem.

How was the packaging from Amazon?  Their prices are good, but I have been very disappointed by their cheap vinyl LP packaging.  I have returned two vinyl albums to Amazon due to the covers getting beat up due their cheap packaging. Then again, I also returned my first copy of the BWRG CD I got from them, as it was shipped in a cheap bubble pack envelope, and and the plastic tray on the digipac was completely cracked from one end to the other.  They shipped the replacement in the same cheap packaging, but the second one arrived in fine condition.  This wouldn't have been an issue for me if BWRG was a jewel box CD, as I would have simply junked the cracked jewel box and placed the CD and inserts in a new jewel box.  But, that being said, I do have a distinct preference for digipacs as opposed to jewel boxes.

Thanks for the reply Custom Machine! Much appreciated. I don't mind extra sounds (as long as it's not extreme) on vinyl records. Like surface noise, some clicks and pops, especially on older records, it adds something to the album imo. They packed the item in a medium sized box, with bubble packets, probably what you described your CD was shipped in.
Is that the proper way to ship vinyl? I've received vinyl different ways from won auctions on eBay and purchases from other websites.
I didn't see anything wrong with the disc as far as warps or anything, though I don't know exactly what to look for. What would they look like exactly?
I tried applying different pressure but that didn't cease it from skipping-even used the anti-skate function. And what do you mean by setting it a little higher, the pressure gauge or the speed of the record playing? Sorry to hear you had a problem with your CD shipment, glad you were able to get it straightened out, unlike my vinyl situation here it seems.

I guess this is as good of thread to ask as any:

For anyone who bought the vinyl edition of Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin:
I ordered this item and the first copy I received from Amazon skipped during the first two tracks.
I asked for an exchange and the replacement I received skips on the first track, but not the second. Did anybody else have this problem - or something similar?
My needle seems to be fine, because it plays all my other records. Maybe I just received badly pressed copies?
Just wondering if I'm the only one who had this happen to them or not.
Thanks!

Listen to the instruments in each tune, specifically the intro/verses of each song.
It doesn't sound identical but it's similar rhythmically and melodically. It may be a stretch, but it sounds that way to me

From the video I just saw (http://vimeo.com/14293335) it appears it's the "Live in London/Beach Boys '69" version.  That was the cover art that appeared as they scrolled by.

I was thinking it could be the "In Concert" version, but I can see the "Live in London" one being in rock band. The tempo is sped up a bit
and might flow with the game better. Would be interesting.

I think it helps to have some familiarity with Gershwin ahead of time.  The material (save the 2 "new" songs) is already rattling around in my head from the distant past... one instance where it helps to be an old-timer!

This album is better with each listen... can't believe how good "Nothing But Love" is...

Yeah when I first heard about this project last year I jumped into the Gershwin library to hear as much
as I could. I knew a good amount from being a fan of Sinatra, Ella & Louis and learning jazz charts - but I didnt know enough. So I basically
prepared myself more this past year to get familiar with the material.

I agree "Nothing But Love" is fantastic, it's so Brian
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Credits on BWRG on: August 12, 2010, 08:00:13 AM
At the BW.com listening party last night I noticed a theremin used subtly throughout the album which was a brilliant touch.
To my ears it sounded like an actual theremin and not like what was on BWPS (I'm guessing) or what they use to tour. Is this correct? (Andrew?)
The tone is what stands out to me.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musical references/quotations in BWRG on: August 12, 2010, 07:50:48 AM
At the end of "I Got Rhythm" I hear the bari sax is playing the line from the sax breakdown in Salt Lake City underneath the "Farmer's Daughter" riff
Also, I got the impression of "Little Saint Nick" or "Help Me Rhonda" rhythm-wise on the backing track of "They Can't take That Away From Me"

75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Recording of BWRG - analog or digital? on: August 10, 2010, 09:42:08 AM
From what I can tell from the documentary video they were recording on analog boards.
They probably transferred the recordings to digital for mixing (though I could be wrong on that) just my guess
