126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Iain Lee's Opinion Of This Forum: \ on: September 02, 2016, 10:16:20 AM
I guess maybe because I've been on the internet for now over 20 years, I've seen far, far weirder groups of fans. Even just among music fans.

This place is often more analytical than other places, but that's what separates it from the "everything is awesome!!!!" communities online. With all due respect, I'm glad this board isn't the "Endless Summer Quarterly" of message boards. Those things have their place too.

I *do* think there are very few cases where a main member of a band has such a large number of detractors among that band's actual hardcore fans. And while I think as fans some self-reflection is always important; we do need to look at how we're acting and our attitudes, I think that interesting factoid about BB fans has far more to do with *Mike Love* than it does the fans. The fans aren't the ones saying and doing all of the things Mike says and does.

I was talking awhile back with someone and we were trying to determine if a George Lucas-Mike Love analogy was apt enough. That is, a main creative figure in a franchise where huge droves of fans heap such scorn. I think the analogy is good enough to make a very general comparison, but I don't think even George Lucas is quite as deserving of the criticism quite as much as Mike is.
I don't know,,,Lucas DID create Jar Jar Binks...I would rather put Kokomo on repeat for 2 hours then have to watch Jar Jar Binks for 2 hours...  LOL

Hey, mediafire blocked first link!
Okay does anyone know of another file sharing site I can use (for free) to repost these? Thanks...

Thanks. I'll grab these in the morning. Just interviewed Dean this evening for my radio show. What a top bloke.
cool... I hope you like the Filet of soul....I think it actually makes sense the way I put certain songs in it, for example I placed "Everybody Loves a clown" after Jan is doing the "We're going to do another song for you" joke at he beginning and then it goes into "Cathy' Clown" so we have two songs about clowns in a row, which emphasize the comedic aspect of the album..also the country intro to "Let's Hang on" goes right into the "Filet of Soul" (released version) of it..
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / the ultimate version of both Smile and Filet of Soul on: August 24, 2016, 06:05:09 PM
I put together what I think is the ultimate version of Smile, using a what if scenario, basically what if Brian was allowed a few more months to finish it, I figured that most of the songs that eventually ended up on Smiley Smile would have been recorded anyways but for Smile, so I decided to add them to the smile recording as well as I added the various comedy bits and sounds effects that were recorded and it sounds Pretty cool, I must say so  myself, also I added "Three Blind Mice" to the Barnyard Suite augmented with my own vocals.. I wanted all the songs to have vocals (unless I thought of them a possible instrumentals" so I used not only the songs from the "Smile Sessions" but also songs from "Brian Wilson presents Smile" (In Mono to match the other songs), "Smiley Smile", from various bootlegs like "Psychedelic Sounds" and songs from "Hawthorn" in three suites each suite in each own track,I placed "Heroes and Villains 1&2" on it and I think you will be surprised by some of the mixes on it, some will come out of left field, I also did what I think would have been a complete version of Jan and Dean's Filet of Soul, using Jan Berry's acetate as well as what their label eventually released, so I added "Let's hang on", "Everyone Loves a clown" and "I found a girl" and surprisingly enough they actually work. I hope you enjoy the both of these..

One time Murry walked up to Brian, this was in the late 60's and went "Knock Knock." for which Brian responded "Who's there?" and Murry walks away never to answer it.....
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The many punishments of Murry Wilson on: August 17, 2016, 01:20:36 PM
There was one time when Murry met with Phil Spector at a bar and got drunk with him and he said to him "you know what would be a funny prank to play on Brian?"  "What's that?" "We should like little microphones in his house, you know in the walls and such and listen to everything that goes on in the house. then we can place little speakers in the wall and also talk to him as if we are in his head." Phil agreed and the rest is history.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The many punishments of Murry Wilson on: August 17, 2016, 01:02:53 PM
in 1966 after Pet Sounds Brian needed some ideas so he went to his dad and his dad gave him a song called "Good Vibrations" and it became a hit so he went to Murry after that for more tunes and Murry slowly, over months and  months gave him bits and pieces of songs and told him how to piece them together like a puzzle,Murry hired Van Dyke Parks to pass his lyrics to Brian as if they were his and then one day fired him after Parks complained abut how Mike was complaining about Murry's lyrics and it pissed Murry off so bad that he burnt down a building down the street from where Brian was recording Murry's new instrumental called "Mrs.O'Leary's cow" and so one day when Brian asked him if he could help him finish the album, Murry said no and took the tapes and hid them and Murry started bootlegging the songs in order to make money. then Brian remembering what they sounded like re-recorded them but they were not as good as the original because Brian didn't know how Murry arranged the songs and it embarrassed Brian so much he told the Beach Boys just to say that they produced it and not him. This is the true story of Smile/Smiley Smile...

Murry has to be the best songwriter, after all he was the genius that wanted to have "Do be do be doos" on "Help Me Rhonda'"  LOL

Just found a couple more errors. apparently, according to this book, Dennis wrote "Funky Pretty" and he was the one who sang "Just once in my life".  LOL

I've seen a lot of picture filled books on bands that seem to be rush released without much fact checking.

I have a Pink Floyd book that called Roger Waters Roger Watts.
Watt the heck? lol...

I went to Barnes and Nobles the other day and found this book for 75% off! it only cost me $8.00..there are some cool rare photos and interesting stories however as I start reading it I find that some of the info is incorrect and that it has some really bad grammar (incomplete sentences etc) and major misspellings, for example "luau"  is spelled "lua" on the single but it's spelled normal in the rest of the book. there's also a photo of an overweight Brian with a long beard from the 70's that has the caption "Brian in the late 60's" written by it..also I may be wrong but I always thought the sandbox was put in his house at the time of Smile, in this book he got the sandbox just before Pet Sounds. also some sentences are hard to understand because words like "to" and "and" are missing in certain spots... but other than these things it's not a bad book.

I'll have to stop by a local B&N to see if I can snag it for $8.  I'd would be worth it just for the photos.

Thanks for the information.
you're welcome, I found it in a discount bin and not on the shelves,,

The discount bin is usually my first stop at B&N.  :-)

And it seems like every store has the same books on discount, so I like my odds.
cool...just look for the "red stickers"

I get the feeling that he was influenced by Chicago when they started using synths with Peter Cetera in the early 80's..my favorite solo song from him is "Of the times" and of course that one just happens to have that Cetera/Chicago synth sound going for it,,,

146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult Child on: June 20, 2016, 11:03:25 AM
it's a shame Brian didn't do the album with JUST songs in the Swing style or the old standards style..I think the album is all over the place, it has no focus..it's almost like Brian wanted to do a swing album did a couple swing songs then got bored with it and just gave up and stuck a bunch of unfinished demos on it ,like "Lines", and some left over songs from 15 big ones like "On Broadway" and songs from the late 60's...it's a shame he didn't actually do the swing/standards album I think it would have been much like Harry Nilsson's  standards album which is actually a nice laid back album with cool arrangements. It's interesting because he had enough old time standards to fill up a short album from the past all he had to do was strip the voices off of the songs and put the Beach Boys vocal on them (new vocals for songs that have older vocals) ..songs like "How deep is the ocean", "Three Blind Mice", "Goodnight my Love", "Tonight you belong to me", "Old man river", "Endless Sleep", and I'm sure I'm missing a few songs that could have made it unto the album..

150  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Monkees 50th anniversay - new album on: May 31, 2016, 11:04:21 AM
I got the new Monkee's cd "Good Times" and I like it.. It is better than "Pool It" and just as good if not better than "Justus" both of which are reunion albums, with Pool It featuring JUST Micky, Davy and Peter and Justus having all 4 on it, writing ,playing and producing each tracks similar to "Headquarters. This new cd is interesting for the fact that they actually not only have 3 new songs written by each Member one by Mike, one by Micky and one by Peter, another neat thing is that Davy Jones has been "Brought back from the grave" so to speak with a rare Monkees song called "Love to Love" written by Neil Diamond and released in the past on the missing links series, this version has been augmented with new background vocals although the music sounds the same, at least to these ears..this cd also has 4 songs dusted up from the vaults and finished. let;s go track by track..

1. Good times- a long lost Harry Nilsson song from 1968 dusted off and finished and yes Harry is actually singing on the track, I would describe it as sounding very 60's,it sounds like Micky's voice is from nowadays and not from back then, really cool song. this only features Micky and Mike.
2. You Bring the Summer- This track i the first on the cd to have all three surviving Monkees singing together, this sounds very 60's, very catchy tune. with a backward guitar, it kind of reminds me of the Beatles maybe something from "revolver".
3. She makes me laugh- another song to feature all three of the surviving members singing together. This is just a great song, very pretty lyrics, this was the first single from the cd and I can see why.
4. our own world- this one sounds like the theme ong for Crank Yankers...lol..no seriously it has a similar sound to that, but I would also describe it as sounding like XTC, it kinds of reminds me of "Your mother should know" or "Good day sunshine" by the Beatles a really upbeat happy song with a nice melody. and it features all 3 of the surviving members.
5. Gotta give it time- now this is one of those songs dusted off from the 60's,1967 to be exact, I'm almost sure it is Micky's original vocal from back then because he sounds younger, this one says on the liner notes that he is the only monkees singing and playing on this one, however there is a voice that sounds a lot like Mike singing in the back ground, however I have a feeling that the songwriter Jeff Barry may be the one singing because he did other songs with the Monkees back in the 60' where he is doing the background vocals in order to sound like other members of the group, most notably the "Changes" album . not a bad song but not great.
6. Me and Magdalina- this is easily one of he best songs on the cd, this only has Mike and Micky, peter is missing for some reason. Very modern sounding, almost like a song you may hear on a college radio station, very folk sounding. very mellow. I would love to see a video for this.
7. Whatevers right- a Boyce and hart song which I assume is from the 60's but it doesn't appear to be dusted off but appears to have been recorded now,of course it wouldn't have been written now since Tommy Boyce has been dead for awhile.
8. Love to Love- The one Davy Jones song that was put on the cd, it's kind of sad to hear it since he passed away. almost brought tear to my eyes. too bad they didn't update the music, but I guess they did the best with what they had.
9. Little Girl- a Peter Tork song this one only features Peter and not any of the other members, the interesting thing is that Peter says that he wrote this one for Davy to sing but he died and never recorded it.
10. Birth of an accidental hipster- I'm not a big fan of Oasis but this song is pretty good, yes this was writen by Noel Gallagher, it's 60's psychedelic at it's best, it reminds me of "Shorty Blackwell" another monkees song, also reminds me of the Beach Boys recording from the Smile era almost like "Heros and Villians" or "Good Vibrations" this one only features Mike and Micky again Peter seems to be missing from this one.
11. wasn't born to follow- another 60' song dusted off from the shelf this one was written by Carol King and is sung by Peter, the other monkess are missing. the voice sounds like Peter nowadays so I'm going to assume that the music is from back from 1968. this has a very folk sound to it.
12. I know what I know- The Michael Nesmith song of the cd, this only features him, the other monkees are not on it. it's a pretty song, with pretty lyrics, almost sounds like Paul McCartney in alot of ways. it's nice to hear Mike again on a monkees cd...
13. I was there (and I'm told I had a good time)- the Micky Dolenz song of the cd again, like Mike and Peters original songs, none of the other monkees are on it. This one sounds similar to "Come Together" or "Get Back" or maybe "Why don't we do it in the road" from the Beatles,it has a basic blues rift...

so all in all I liked the cd...just wished they had one more Davy Jones song on it.
