51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 14 Beach Boys albums coming to vinyl/SACD on: July 20, 2016, 07:43:39 AM
Finally got my Holland album in the mail.  Only took a year to receive it!   Razz  Just gave it a spot-listen in the SACD player and so far so good.  Interestingly, "We Got Love" (studio version) is present and accounted for but there is no mention of it anywhere in the liner notes or in the packaging.

You confused me.  When you said "album" I thought you meant vinyl.  But anyway, hows the sound?

Sound is pretty good.  SACD sounds as it should be.  The regular CD audio sounds fine as well, although the overall volume levels appear to be a tad lower than previous remasters of this album.  Glad I finally received this album.

That's a good thing - louder volume generally means the audio is more compressed and compromised to increase the perceived Loudness.

the SACD's look really well packaged from images online.  Can't justify spendin' the dough on these yet after rebuying the mono/stereo releases from a few years back.  The SACD's no doubt are the better product, but gee, how many copies of surfer girl or little deuce coupe draws the line?....

The differences in sound quality between the 2012 releases (I'm assuming that's what you're referring to) and the SACDs are night and day.  The 2012's sound very shrill and brittle to me, particularly the stereo portions.  The SACDs are probably the best these are ever going to sound on cd.  Not perfect, but very enjoyable.

The packaging is a huge difference as well.  The thin, flimsy covers of the 2012's are guaranteed to scuff up the cds in a short amount of time (and I hate eco-packs), while the SACD packaging is much more durable and friendly to the discs.

I'm not made of money, so I have made the decision to buy only certain ones.  When the next batch comes out (hopefully soon) I will certainly buy Sunflower right off, and then I'll see how I feel about the others at that time.

The only SACD I'm really on the fence about is Pet Sounds.  I already have the MFSL SACD of it and I think it sounds wonderful, but I have seen comments from some people that the AP is even better.  Thoughts, anyone?

As someone with all the SACDs so far (Bar Party!), I say they are ALL worth it. Pet Sounds is slightly better than the MFSL, but not enough to say buy it if you only want the stereo - obviously essential for the mono. Everything else is essential.

There's some pretty decent boots of whole shows, Red Rocks being well known. I have a Hollywood Bowl one a friend did too.
54  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 07, 2016, 02:36:44 PM
I can't believe this happened. I am shocked. Scott took this poor woman somewhere quiet.

I see what you did there. I laughed too much.

Regardless, this is terrible. I would say I hope the victim gets their compensation, but you can't compensate for a horrific experience.

I'm excited for this album. Some good sounds so far, and Wyatt Funderburk, one of the newest members, is a terrific musician. I haven't however actually listened to Freedom Wind...

They HAVE to be making a documentary for Pet Sounds' 50th.
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thats Why God Made The Radio Single? on: February 25, 2016, 12:06:48 PM
A: I could probably do a much better job of the needledrop of the TWGMTR instrumental now, or at least Lossless.

B: What I really want is the Isn't It Time Instrumental on the Promo CD. It's never been uploaded anywhere, and sadly the Promo CD goes for more than I'm willing to pay on Discogs.

I really liked it, especially after Mike's atrocity.

So it came out today in the UK... On the internet it seems. No HMV I've been to has any sign of it.

Be sure to check out our other singles until the album is ready!

Any idea when that will be, give or take a month?

At the moment it's very unsure. The plan was December, but the producer is in a bit of dilemma at the moment(it's a very long story), and while it's all recorded, all we have is the three singles, and no contact as he appears to be devoid of Internet (and in Malaysia).

I'll be sure to let you know when we do.

Current title is "BELIEF" though.

Okay. Thanks. Good luck with the album.  :=)

I was planning on picking up the Fear 2 Stop album at the same time but I may get that sooner now...

Yeah, pick that up first. It could be a couple of months yet.

It would seem odd to not have a release covering the rest of Today!/SDSN, even with the Party! CD...
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most up-front BB lead vocals vs. most buried BB lead vocals on: November 30, 2015, 04:08:06 AM
COMMENT:
Dennis will try to bury his vocals because he doesn’t think he’s a very good singer and gets embarrassed when he hears himself under the “microscope” of a studio monitor during mixdown. I have fought with him many times trying to convince him that his vocal was too low

It seems like one time this wasn't the case was (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again. His vocal is very prominent, especially in the chorus. It's terrific.

One would assume WIBNTLA is a 2012 mix.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Yowza - this cooks!! Love and Mercy on: November 29, 2015, 03:00:48 PM
This video was posted six months ago, and this is the first mention of it I've seen here. What a cool opportunity for the kids. A couple of them even pay excitedly in the comments section.

That being said, the effect on Brian's voice is...unique. Is his voice being doubled live, as he's singing? Or was it added later? Not asking sarcastically, I genuinely don't know.

I don't think the whole thing is meant to be live per se. Brian is doubled and processed heavily beyond doubt.
67  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Planned Parenthood videos exposed as fake. on: November 29, 2015, 09:41:55 AM
What is now exposed is that these videos are faked and a hoax and you failed to update the thread on your now debunked story. It boggles the mind how so many of you use the Fox News propaganda machine as truth and fact.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/04/opinions/louis-planned-parenthood/

Not only that, it is illegal for PP to sell fetal tissue, and PP is prohibited by law to use Federal money for abortion services.

I'd like to control your right to buy a gun but it is your Constitutional right. Funny how you Republicans complain about the over reach of big govt and govt regulation but when it comes to your issues, like abortion,  you want to pass laws to control and stop it.

Yes, the woman's right to chose, Constitutional right as handed down by the Supreme Court. In case you didn't  realize, carrying around a big thing in your belly for 9 months is no trivial thing.  It  can endanger a woman's health, mess up her body permanently and affect her life in multiple ways you obviously have never seriously considered. Not to mention, deciding not to bring a child into a situation of poverty in some cases. Seems like not adding to the 50% of takers Mitt Romney and Fox NEWS love to complain about would make you happy.

I love this post so much.

Abortion should always be a choice.

Scandalous that no one has commented yet. Too busy gouging each other's eyes out across the road, no doubt.

Vid's a tad cheezy, F, but the song is top-notch. As are your brilliant interpretations of Beach Boys songs. The autotuned ones are in a class of their own. Grin

Thanks for taking a chance to listen, and I'm glad you liked it! The video was put together pretty quickly by me just so we had something people could share easily, at the end of the day, it's the music that's important. Be sure to check out our other singles until the album is ready!
69  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / New Hypnotic Eye single - "While I'm Young" [With Music Video!] on: November 26, 2015, 03:45:00 AM
Hi everyone, I'm back again with another Hypnotic Eye single from our upcoming album, this time it's the Garage Power-Pop number "While I'm Young".
This track has had an AMAZING response from everyone I've played it to, so hopefully the fine folks at Smiley Smile will enjoy it too Smiley I've eve put together a music video for it this time, using pro-shot live footage, studio footage, odds and ends, and even some old footage of both Joe and I.

I hope you enjoy it! The download links are on the YouTube description, but you can get it for free from our Bandcamp and Soundcloud, but it's also on iTunes, Spotify, GooglePlay... You name it!

70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson's backing vocals on Tom Petty's Wildflowers on: November 26, 2015, 03:37:53 AM
Great thread. I'm not the hugest Petty fan overall, but that stretch with Wildflowers/She's the One/Echo just hits me in the right way. Very melancholy vibes to each, and a very upfront sound; great headphone albums for me.

I do hear Carl in the "ooh" stack on Honey Bee, but it does not jump out at all, I have to listen with the knowledge that he's on it. Just listening to Hung Up and Overdue again, and here he similarly isn't incredibly prominent. Is he anywhere else on the song besides the outro? I'm on laptop speakers so my judgement may not be optimal...

And the thought of Carl in the Wilbury's is delightful. I actually don't like their output that much, I'm not a huge fan of the Jeff Lynne sound on certain things (actually I really dislike the sound and production of Full Moon Fever to be honest, despite some great songs).

Carl doubles Tom in the chorus doesn't he?

"I'm overdue, for a dream come true" etc.

Is there anywhere in the UK that has this for sale at the moment. Nowhere has it Cry
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 14 Beach Boys albums coming to vinyl/SACD on: October 14, 2015, 02:27:42 AM
So, can I get a double check on Scott Nangle for the SACDs? I remember at least one member here ordered theirs from him successfully, but I just want to confirm this before I order ASL/BBT/SDSN/PS (I'm skipping Party!... for now).
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Ten Years Of Harmony on: September 18, 2015, 02:41:26 AM
So, just to clarify:
A: Only the EU version has the Single Mixes, and only the US version has the alternate Come Go With Me? I picked up the EU CD yesterday (for £6!) and this was the case.
B: Single versions included:
         1) California Saga/California
         2) It's OK
         3) Rock 'n' Roll Music
         4) Cool, Cool Water
C: Plus the exclusive Sea Cruise
D: It also apparently includes "Long Promised Rad" on the EU CD. Hmmmm.

But yes, swap out School Day with another Love You track and I'm down with this compilation.
74  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Whatever Happened (Brian Wilson Cover) - Produced by Brian Wilson on: September 15, 2015, 04:37:08 AM
It's a shame about all the autotune glitching going on here...

True I got lazy and did the whole song down in 2 takes. Technically not supposed to record on weekends at my apartment (so lame) so I just busted it out quickly and tuned the leads in Melodyne. FWIW, there is no tuning on the harmonies.

Maybe I'll do a 4th version with non-tuned leads. Smiley

Yeah, I figured it was Melodyne given the lack of "solid" notes as such. And I thought the Harmonies sounded great! Excellent. If you can bust out a solid take for it, I'd love it Smiley

I love the arrangement on this. It's a shame about all the autotune glitching going on here...

Like I said though, stellar arrangement! I'd love to hear this played like this live in the studio.
