151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The stereo mixes on MIC can't hold a candle to Brian's original work! on: November 21, 2014, 11:12:16 AM
I normally love stereo remixes, stuff like "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" or the original 1996 stereo remix of "Pet Sounds." But most of the stereo remixes done from about 2001 on have been often if not usually drenched in WAY too much reverb. The stuff on the "Smile Sessions" box was generally okay. But the overuse of reverb/echo on the stereo remixes kind of negate the effect of spreading the sound out and letting it breathe, because the reverb muddies it all up.

After spending a lot of time listening to stereo remixes of stuff like "Please Let Me Wonder" and "You're So Good to Me", it was a weird revelation to hear the original mono mixes again. They actually sound more crisp and clear. Not even because they're punchy mono, but simply because a lot of those Brian mixes sound comparatively almost bone dry compared to the 2000's digital remixes.

That's what I love about the Do It Again remix. It's very dry [last time I checked], and actually sounds more vintage than a lot of the mixes.

LOVE THIS. The guitar playing is perfect (especially in I'm Bored - the way the guitar and drums intertwine, they work really well together).

As much as I like the 'unplugged' nature of these recordings, I can't wait to see you take this to a studio....especially 'The Stars Are Melting' - that coda deserves a few studio tweaks (reverb, etc). BUT I love the atmosphere you two have created here - the music is just there and nothing distracts you from it.

Again, can't stress the guitar work enough - instead of just backing up the band, it seems like it's just another member of the band - has a personality almost (if that doesn't sound too cheesy haha). Most modern bands I've heard lately tend to use the guitar as a rhythm instrument until a solo comes up in the middle-eighth...you've got this thing playing all sorts of amazing sh*t all through every song - and it flows so well. The lack of bass didn't bother me one iota, but if you added a bass player I wouldn't mind either.

Anywho, I'm def gonna buy a copy when I get my next paycheck (yeah I know it's free but I hate not supporting up-and-coming bands I like). Looking forward to seeing where you guys take this!

Wow, thanks man! I never expected that kind of praise to come through! I made sure to pass this onto my friend, since the majority of the comments were directed at his guitar playing (not a bad thing).

I like how you labelled it as "unplugged" in nature - I get what you mean, and I hadn't considered that. that's not to say there weren't edits and overdubs in there - there evidently were - but it just allowed the insturments to feel a lot tighter. Your point on "I'm Bored" too is something I'm proud of - I tried to just run the drums with the guitar as closely a I could, and I feel it paid off nicely. The Stars Are Melting "Coda" was my idea too :D i wonder where I got that from... Though to be fair my friend did say he was in a Surf-Rock vibe when he wrote the track, so that works.

And thanks for intending to buy it! That means so much to us as it is, especially since you'll be the first! Puts some change in the kitty  3D

As a final note, if you do have Facebook, if you could drop us a "like" on ther eit would be amazing - helps spread it that little bit more y'know.

But once again, Thank you so much! Be sure to check out our soundcloud for the first demo we ever did for "Which Way (Do I Go)?"

My friend and I have been playing together for a good few years now, but finally decided to do some half-way decent attempts at recording material for a self produced EP. Featuring just Drums (me) and Guitar with vocals (my friend) it should be relatively sparse, but I personally feel we definitely make up for the lack of bass - take a listen and see what you think. We've had some good feedback from people so far, and more is always wanted, good or bad!

As a bit of context, the drums and guitar were recorded together in live takes in a barn, with the drums having two overheads and a kick mic, and the guitar having a mic for the amp. The vocals were then overdubbed back at my house a few days later, as well as additional guitar overdubs on two of the tracks. The backing tracks are as we played that, with next to no editing used to ensure a very "live" feel. We hope this comes across in the recordings Smiley

I do have to say, awesome sentiment that I agree with 100%, but those "keep calm" posters (and t-shirts, and mugs, and jockstraps, and limited edition jockstrap mugs, and so on) are indeed rather ubiquitous and trendy these days. I would have figured British folks would be even more annoyed. I figured an American going to the UK with a "Keep Calm" t-shirt would be right up there with asking whether your commemorative Charles and Diana plates you bought at the grocery store in the 80's are worth five grand or ten grand.

General rule: If it's available at "Hot Topic", I'm probably annoyed by it. Great, Doctor Who and My Little Pony are now hipster, trendy fake-nerdy now.

Still waiting for any BB shirts at Hot Topic; I might actually buy one of those!  LOL

Yeah, it's everywhere in the UK, and has been from it's inception [well, discovery].

On a side note relating to your post, I did go to a Hot Topic while I was in america, and bought some bits simply because I was interested and, you know, exchange rate is pretty damn good.

But what if it said, Keep Calm and Listen to Oasis or Beady Eye?

I'll certainly give you credit there... I hardly know many people that actually know Beady Eye exist. Regardless, that doesn't change the sentiment Grin It's still telling me to keep calm

I. Hate. The Keep Calm thingy.

But sure, why not.

My favourite recent purchase, since it filled a massive hole in my UK singles, was the Mess of Help/Cuddle Up 45 w/Picture Sleeve. Great single I've been looking for for ages! - £3!

166  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why would anyone be obsessed/so very much into The Beach Boys? on: May 06, 2014, 08:27:59 AM
2. My brain is wired in such a way that I am prone to obsession, and probably everyone else here is the same way. People whose brains don't work that way, won't understand it at all. This is probably the root of other people thinking we're all a bunch of weirdos, not that they think it's weird to like the Beach Boys specifically. They just can't understand that obsessive drive to know, have and listen to everything.

This.

I obsess over everything. It's crazy. My wallet hates it.

BUT I LOVE IT.
167  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tell us about your Beach Boys collection on: May 06, 2014, 02:19:16 AM

Pet Sounds is 2001 mono/stereo version. All two-fers are 2000/2001. I just remembered I have an Australia compilation called Greatest Hits on cassette. It's from the 80s and has The Beach Boys' medley and the ballads medley (plus other songs Smiley).

It's very annoying how M.I.U Album/L.A. Light Album is out-of-print. I wouldn't mind getting a used copy of it, if it was under $30AU. There's some good songs on those albums.

Keep an eye on eBay for an "MIU CD", as when one was listed as such I won it for £2.
168  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My Brian Wilson Review That Lucky Old Sun on: May 04, 2014, 02:58:41 PM
The spoken word and reprises are essentially filler. Without them the record wouldn't be a full length.

I'd too thought about this before. In my mind TLOS always seemed like a really long album but then one day I finally tallied it up and figured out there's really only ten "full songs" and honestly, it does seem a bit short, and in reality kinda weak, as I think stuff like "Mexican Girl" and "California Role" is a bit cheesy, and a few of the other songs just kinda underdeveloped.

I suppose when you add in all the bonus tracks though it becomes a bit more substantial.

When someone mentions length of an album, it's purely subjective. An album can be too long, but rarely too short. regardless...

Thanks for reposting! Sorry for not reading the whole thread this morning - was in a hurry. So David Gates from Bread fame was on this one. Wonder why it was available for awhile in inferior quality (Get The Boot) then mysteriously appeared on MIC in great condition. Didn't even show up on an SOT or Vigotone release. Just curious.

I never felt the Get the Boot version was that bad in quality. The only difference I find on MIC is no/minimal hiss, panned vocals and clearer vocals. However, I almost find this vocal too harsh. But whichever.

I  feel some of the albums weren't reissued because they wouldn't sell... no one's gonna pay for CAPT

CATP is my 3rd Favourite Beach Boys album.

Currently my collection consists of:

1 - the CDs

2 - the DVDs

3 - the books.

Everything else - vinyl, magazines, memorabilia and general "stuff" - was lost two years ago.

How do you lose that much stuff?  Moving? an ex takes off with it?  Storm damage?

Freak Worm hole?
Or donated to the british museum? Wink

There is a British Beach Boys museum?

Cool, I'm moving my collection over there so we can have dueling pianos!
