1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mixology - Sounds of Summer (Expanded Edition) Full Mixes Breakdown and A/B on: June 21, 2022, 09:01:56 AM
Hi All, it's been a while!

Thought you might be interested in my newest episode of the Mixology podcast, where I break down everything new (i.e. different) in the new mixes on the Sounds of Summer set, including mixes not noted on the back, and incorrectly noted ones too!

As always, you can find it wherever you get your podcasts, but a podbean link is here: https://mixology.podbean.com/e/sounds-of-summer-expanded-edition-by-the-beach-boys/

Here's my episode notes as well. Enjoy!

Quote
Hello Friends! We've got an extra special episode of the show today, digging into all of the new mixes presented on the recently released Expanded Edition of The Beach Boys' huge selling compilation Sounds of Summer, newly remixed by Mark Linett. With 28 9not the listed 24) tracks to look into, we'll be breaking down each of these mix by mix, in the order they appear on the compilation, starting with the earliest mix offered, and working through a summary of all subsequent mono, stereo, single mixes and remixes, culminating in the new 2021 mix of the track, and breaking down exactly what makes these new mixes unique. We'll also be correcting some mislabelling of mixes here, to give you a proper breakdown of exactly what you're getting. From first-time stereo mixes of tracks like 'I Get Around' that emulate the original mono mixes extremely closely, to later remixes of 70s tracks such as 'Let Us Go On This Way' that radically change the soundscape, let us see what's on offer here, and help you decide if these new mixes will become your new sounds of summer.

Happy Listening,

Frederick

I can understand why they weren't a part of this set, but I would love for the mono promo mixes of Susie Cincinatti and Add Some Music to turn up on an end of year copyright dump Wink I'm guessing maybe the next mix of the former on the box will mirror this in stereo - we'll soon know!
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: April 13, 2021, 03:31:57 AM
It's coming.
It's major.

The machine is at full speed.
Howie providing all the info we need! Much appreciated as always.

Given that’s not a Friday, it won’t  be coming out that day.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: March 19, 2021, 02:18:09 PM
Amazon’s preorder price guarantee means you’ll only get charged the lowest price it’s listed at before they ship it to you. Should there be a freak drop (and believe me, it’s happened), you don’t want to have missed that.

Isn't that the way regular pre-ordering works once the product has officially been announced? At least that's how it's worked for me -- lowest price from the point at which you pre-order.

Oh, of course, but Amazon is the place that has the whackiest price fluctuations going.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: March 18, 2021, 03:19:40 PM
What's the advantage in pre-ordering this way, before the set is officially announced?

I live in the US, so the option isn't available to me, but I'm wondering why the rush.
Amazon’s preorder price guarantee means you’ll only get charged the lowest price it’s listed at before they ship it to you. Should there be a freak drop (and believe me, it’s happened), you don’t want to have missed that. Also, if I change my mind, they won’t charge until it ships, so I can cancel quite happily. So if it’s going to cost me roughly the same as my local shop, I’ll order it local.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: March 17, 2021, 12:57:16 AM
I ordered it. They won't charge me till it ships, and if it turns out to be the Bucks Fizz Box set, I'll just cancel it. Best case scenario, I get Feel Flows on release day for the price-locked price.

Is there a link to this mystery Amazon box set?

nvm, I found it. Looks like Amazon pulled it for sale in Japan, UK and Australia, and it's completely memory-holed in the US site. But it is both a 5CD box and 2CD set coming from Universal Music Group in June, so... [fingers crossed]

Care to post a link? I can't find it.

UK site is

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08TZK8TTR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
£80 seems potentially steep, but I put in a preorder for that Amazon price guarantee. I can always cancel anyway.

I haven't heard those harpsichord parts before.

I'm not sure about the legitimacy of these, do they sound like sample instruments to anyone else? If I was going to add Brian Wilson style harpsichord to a pre-existing track, it would be in that pattern. I am listening on a tablet though.

Those vocals at the end sound legit though.

They're all from the version of the 20/20 Sessions release from 2018. Check it out!
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child on CD on: February 10, 2021, 04:56:29 AM
Given someone in the US sent me the promo CD for free a couple of years ago, I feel quiet content. It's a shame there wasn't even a promo 45 of it, but such is the way I suppose.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: February 04, 2021, 11:16:46 AM
Well, there's like 116 tracks (give or take 1 or 2) on this box set.

We know of around 70-80 of them at this stage, what they will be. I'd allow 10 tracks for the 1970 Big Sur show. There could be some rehearsals. I don't think there'll be more than 2 or 3 from CATP.

That leaves, let's say at least 20 tracks that we don't know about. Those 20 could be either more run-of-the-mill tracks or they could be revelatory. ??
What makes you think there’s 116 tracks?
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile Research Project - Recommendations? on: February 02, 2021, 02:31:52 PM
I would strongly recommend the Sail On podcast.  They're about to move on to Smiley Smile but the nine episodes covering SMiLE are gold!

Thanks Dan. I'm a big fan of the Sail On podcast, as well. The 9 episodes on Smile are DEFINITELY going to be part of my research!

The two guests that Wyatt uses on these episodes know their Smile-stuff.
Some might say they know a little too much...

It’s utterly fascinating though.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: January 29, 2021, 12:56:58 AM
Considering Howie has updated us recently I wouldn’t call it being quiet for a year.
Exactly. It feels like we haven’t had an update from Howie for a hot minute, and the last two were “it’s all going well”. Smells good to me!
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: January 27, 2021, 11:57:33 PM
We'll all have forgotten who the Beach Boys were by the time this comes out.
Yeah, things have been awfully quiet recently. It’s making me optimistic for an announcement soon at least.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 24, 2020, 07:24:34 AM
So I guess we've got the Rolling Stones to thank for no more annual copyright releases?
Is it midnight in NZ then?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 19, 2020, 11:45:39 PM
Wow! I would expect more too, as that certainly isn’t 5CDs worth, or even4CDs including the two main albums on 1CD.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mono / Stereo promo 45s from the seventies on: December 18, 2020, 04:56:30 AM
From Steve Hoffman:

"Fun, Fun, Fun" was mixed three times back then.

Mix number one was the mono 45 RPM hit mix. You can recognize it by the "push" in volume during the instrumental
break and the organ highlighted. Has a nice long fade. Mixed by JOHN KRAUS at Capitol Tower from the Western
Recorders three-track.

Mix number two was the mono 33 1/3 LP mix. Easily picked out by the favoring of the GUITAR over the organ in the
instrumental section. (Note that one of the lead guitars was on the vocal channel so easy to bump up). Hard to miss.
Mixed by Chuck Britz at Western Recorders. On the great Capitol BB's CD MADE IN THE USA as well as the LP "Shut
Down, Volume 2".

Mix number three was the infamous "Chuck Britz one handed fade out" stereo mix. Done for the stereo version of the
"Shut Down, Volume 2" LP version. This is the version used on the DCC Gold CD and countless others. Great sounding
mix except for the ending where Mr. Britz (in a hurry to go to lunch) decided to fade the thing right down and catch a
smoke. He did his famous one handed fade. In other words, he faded the music channel right on down really fast leaving
the two vocals tracks hanging in the wind. Then he reached back up and faded them down quickly. Why he didn't use the
master fader and get them all down at the same time is anyone's guess. Probably the master fader was noisy or some
problem or another at that point. Many stereo BB songs from this time period were faded out like this (Wendy, Little
Deuce Coup, etc. Heck, on WENDY he faded out the middle vocal channel first leaving the two music tracks hanging in
the wind. Very silly).

Why Do Fools Fall in Love, there are two mixes of the song. First mix done at Gold Star for the album. Second mix done
at Capitol from the Gold Star three-track. They sound pretty much alike. The Capitol mix has the voices further down in
the mix. They took a dub of the Capitol mix and switched the parts around, starting with the middle a capella part at the
beginning. I used the LP mix, unedited. Better mix, the one with Brian in attendance during mixing. He would have been the one
to pick the "good" mix, eh?

There are 3 versions/mixes of Why Do Fools Fall in Love.

1. The LP mix from the twin-track done at Gold Star (ala Phil Spector) by Larry Levine with Brian Wilson that I used, as
stored on mono LP master of SHUT DOWN, VOLUME II.

2. The Capitol 45 remix from the twin-track done without Brian's OK with lowered vocal track and filtered top and bottom
to make it easier to cut. Unused, stored in the old "S" reel section, marked "reject".

3. The Capitol SPLICED version which totally screws up the song (actually the same mix as number 2 but with the A&R
guy's idea of a better intro). Duped from number 2. Stored in the "S" reel section (Singles). This is the version that was
the "B" side of the single. If you like this "arrangement", make your own digital edits to create it; it's easy.

Note From Andrew Sandoval:
FYI: The Capitol/EMI vault had a safety phono reel tape of the "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" single version when I worked
The Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2 CD's (on which it was almost included) in 1999.

All very useful info, but not pertaining to the 45s queried here.

As for the OP, I’ve found these singles for the most part to be folds, but sometimes with unique processing to make them works little better, be they EQ or compression. Nothing essential for collectors of the music itself, but fascinating for people like me that love to hear the continuous proliferation of mono, even if falsely.

Work continues on.
There's a really good communal vibe regarding the box.

FEEL FLOWS is going to be the perfect soundtrack to 2021.

Wonderful news Howie! Looking forward to it.

Yep. Remember the brouhaha when the tracking on that one disc on Made in California was off by half a second?

It was 2 seconds, and you can bet I got my replacement!

Listened to our 1969 EP again today. I hope all this sort of material is still included in the box set - these aren’t bits that should just be on a random CE set when the box set exists.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: November 16, 2020, 11:27:48 PM
Unless a ‘final song’ can top ‘Summers Gone’,I’m just not interested. I stumbled on the 2012 C50 London version a few days ago and seeing Brian playing it smiling, missed lyrics and all, just can’t be topped.

Wow, I uploaded that just over 8 years ago? It was quite a trip to watch that again - thanks for reminding me!

As for FF, I hope we hear any more info shortly.
