Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Where has Darian been?

I got to see Billy with the BW Band while Darian was touring with The Zombies last fall. It was cool seeing him, but you REALLY miss Darian's vocals more than you think. He pulls Our Prayer together, as well as several others. It's shocking that in a sea of 10+ voices, you can instantly notice something is missing when he's away.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Anyone here from the Philly area and like The Zombies?

Hi everyone, I figured I'd offer this up to any Brian/Beach Boys fans: I have an extra ticket to see The Zombies at the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, PA next Sunday the 15h. The ticket is in the third row and smack dead center. You'd be only a few feet (if that) directly in front of Colin Blunstone. I'm not looking to profit, just want to recoup my purchase cost. I'm still going, so you'd be sitting next to me. Would be glad to chat Beach Boys during the intermission Anyone interested?

He's heavily processed and/or lipsyncing (personally, I think it's both!). He's coming around here this weekend and I've never seen him, but tickets are over $100, which is silly to pay for a guy who isn't even being honest in a live setting. I think he's an icon and a legend, though - some of those Four Seasons records rival ANYONE'S during that time period - Beatles and BBs included.
2+ years later, he came back to the same venue and this time I went. It was great to see him (and was up against the stage for the last half hour with a bunch of other people, which was cool - shook his hand and made eye contact a few times), but he did lip-sync the entire show. It's a lot to spend for someone who isn't *actually* singing.

The current version of "Jay & The Americans" came to a local 300 seat theater in December, and I wasn't going to go, but decided to buy tickets a few hours before the show. Glad I did, as I can now say I've seen all of the members of the 60s incarnations of JATA.
Jay Black (3x solo) Jay Traynor (3x as a member of Jay Siegel's Tokens before he passed) Kenny Vance (1x as a member of Kenny Vance & The Planotones) Marty Sanders, Sandy Deane, & Howie Kane (1x as "Jay & The Americans)
Great group.

I secured a front row seat for the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Last time I was stage left and right in front of Brian. This time I am stage right (though I tried for stage left), assuming a similar setup, I should be right in front of Al. Huge thanks to my wife, who rolled her eyes last night when I mentioned going to my third Brian Wilson show within an 18 month span.
I did some searching on the ticketmaster seat locator and it appears the rows 1 and 2 are set aside for the VIP soundcheck and meet & greet, which totals 44 tickets. Rows 3 and 4 are set aside for the VIP soundcheck only and total 42 tickets. I found this interesting since the top level VIP offer stipulates a ticket within the first 5 rows.
I'll bit interested to hear initial reports on how the meet & greets are conducted. I'm crossing my fingers to have at least one outside item signed (beyond the poster and sheet music), as I would like to complete my Rolling Stone cover already signed by Mike and Bruce. Also, it's not explicitly stated that Al and Blondie will participate, but I assume they will.
How did everyone else do?
I was gifted the soundcheck package (very generous!). For my venue, the first five rows (a/k/a the pit) was reserved for super duper VIP and the first two actual theatre seat rows were set aside for the soundcheck VIP. I went with the first row of theatre seats, right center, where presumably Brian will be facing. I'm actually concerned I'll be TOO close, as I don't want to experience the piano blockage of Brian's face, but it's totally worth the risk. I was dreading having to do the whole TicketBastard/LiveNation try-to-grab-tickets-the-moment-they-go-on-sale-and-see-if-you-can-actually-get-one. It's frustrating. I love dealing with non-LiveNation venues that actually open up all of their seats (or most of them, anyway), and don't stagger on sale times, don't play games, and charge reasonable fees. Not sure why Ticketmaster can't do some version of the same. Anyway, the eight month countdown begins. Super psyched!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'Darlin' featured on The Big Bang Theory TV show

I'm so glad the show has given Darlin' (& The BBs - AND a Brian Wilson name drop!) some exposure, but I don't get the appeal of The Big Bang Theory. Awful acting, awful writing, unfunny jokes. I've seen a few episodes and just can't grasp the millions of people who think this is 'comedy'. Anyway, I watched this episode because of obvious reasons and it made me cringe. The script writing, especially in the scene where Sheldon is on the laptop reading lyrics, felt like a bad fan ficition. Yikes. Hopefully it generates some downloads of the tracks - and I'm sure a few people will discover the genius of Brian Wilson through this, so I shouldn't complain.

To be honest, this is a great deal in my opinion. I've got an autographed Beach Boys album I bought on ebay years ago, but who the hell knows if it's even legit. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Brian in person.
Getting an autographed album straight from the record distributor is the best certificate of authenticity you can have besides meeting Brian yourself.
I wanted to support The Beach Boys upon their release of TWGMTR and bought, at Mike Love's prompting, ten copies at one of the two C50 shows I went to. The deal was, buy 10, one of them is autographed by all of the guys. I wanted my favorite band to reach the top of the charts - and this is what Mike Love wanted, too - and was thrilled at the thought of getting a Brian Wilson signature. I never thought I'd get to meet him. It was later exposed on this board that my copy is a Jeff Foskett forgery, not a Brian Wilson authentic signature. I will NEVER buy or believe a signature that I don't witness in person. Who knows, in any case with ANY artist, who is signing these things unless you are there to watch the sharpie hit the merch with your own eyes. I have been fortunate enough to watch Brian sign things for me two times after that - and those I treasure dearly.

Tragically Sundazed (again) missed to include The Knickerbockers 1965/66 version of "Fun, Fun, Fun", so people still has to go over to Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1dJjka0Ewg and listen to the lip-synced Dick Clark's ABC-TV clip. I don't think the quick recordings The Knickerbockers (or any "cast" bands on WTAI) survive anywhere but the original kinescopes - and that would be quite the hassle for Sundazed to clear/obtain - not mentioning the fact that the quality wouldn't be as good as the Challenge masters they are using (all mono for this one, btw).

This is beyond brilliant - there is such an understanding of Brian's melodies and harmony in this mix. There were so many moments on my first listen where I would just have to smile and think..."hey, that worked perfectly!". My two favorite moments are the intertwining of Hello Goodbye and Please Let Me Wonder and the seamless transitions between Hushabye and Don't Worry Baby. This is something fresh to the community - I applaud you for it.

I looove it when artists play albums live. Seeing this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I've recently gotten into the Zombies myself... They're going to be at the same venue where I saw Brian Wilson, haha. It's kind of tempting... there's still seats. Sounds like they give a great performance. Thanks for reviving this thread!
Hey, you! GO! I doubt they will do this again, especially with Chris and Hugh. I saw it on Sunday and it was superb - especially the O&O set.
