+1 There's just something about this album. Thanks to your enthusiasm, yhs, I've got this album on my current listening list. It sounds amazing----and vaguely familiar, although to my knowledge I've only heard the two singles before now (or were there more?).

Monks The Monks have a BB connection. Having learned that as The Torquays they also covered a lot of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys, whose harmonies they admired, I emailed the band's website and got a reply within the hour from one of the original members, guitarist and singer Gary Burger. He said that when they were The Torquays they did "California Girls", "Barbara Ann" and "Little Honda" and that was probably it. Roger the drummer sang "Little Honda" and "did a great job. We were pretty good on the Beach Boy harmonies and the audiences loved those songs." The Torquays/Monks were BB fans. Once they became the Monks they played that and other music much less. His conclusion? "A great time in my life." R.I.P. Gary, Roger and David.

This is turning into a haiku-silo'drome; in that it goes 'wound and awound a.s.o., a.s.f.. And then comes out WIGHT here!(to quote Elmer F.)... And FURTHURmore: Once you've finished readin' the bleedin' thing, it bloody well turns around, starting all over again with the very same words! So? Live with it OR move it over to The Sandbox! I'd say it definitely belongs here, to inject a badly needed dose of positivity to these parts. Until we fall out, that is. While I'm here: A slightly high Brian needs late-night help on a new song (and a meal by starlight): No sleep, Al! Let's draw planets... Aha! Hasten alp- ward! (Stella peels on)

You guys have made it clear that it sucks to be a Beach Boys fan. That we have to take sides and only enjoy the side that was picked.
drbeachboy, there's a handful of posters whom I would describe as being the Voice of Reason round here and you're one of them. So don't be put off by the side-takers. It seems to be contagious, this side-taking business, as if you only count if you takes sides. That's bullshit. I and many others here who love the Boys and their music are not taking sides and never will. So no, it doesn't suck to be a fan----no way!

Cheers (likewise)! Like WE say at DebonAIR Aviation: Carpe(t)Diem/"Mi manana". HAPPY VALENTINE, everybody!
And a Happy Valentine to you, sir. :=) My next project is to be a Dennis palindrome in which he doesn't sin----well, not in so many words... But sin he does in this first somewhat strained attempt: < Shoot, o how Tsar Dennis kayaks in Nedra's two hot "Ooh!"s >

I would vote for BEACH BABY hands down. For many of us in High School at the time... we thought it WAS the Beach Boys... and were disappointed that it wasn't. A classic mid 1970s pop hit. I recall reading that it even took Brian by surprise, at the time. I remember her was quoted as saying it sounded "like us."
I used to hate this song in the '70s, I mean really hate it. Then about ten years ago I heard it on the magnificent comp The Warmth of the Sun and hey presto. How could I have ever hated this joyous anthem to sun and sand? One thing though: I can understand Carter quoting his own "Let's Go To San Francisco" at the end but I wonder what induced him to quote from Sibelius's Fifth Symphony? No matter----it's most effective.

How can anyone decamp, as long as Mr. j keeps on setting them up so cunningly, so that one can't help but stay a happy camper! The next one is from when Murry Gage Wilson/'Reg' would be placed behind an unplugged mixing console in the studio. It still needs improving, John & all others:
>'Now STOP, knobs-surger!'
Gage: "Treble Delbert!" : E-GAG!!
'Reg': "Russ' bonk-pots won"<
I see no need for improvement (and all others agree). You da man, Rasmus!

Some might argue that the BB's were not musicians. At least very good ones. Good singers though.
I think Carl would qualify as a good musician by almost anyone's definition. And Dennis may not have been a particularly skilled drummer on the earliest sessions, but he became one. Bruce? He doesn't show off his instrumental abilities these days, but there was a time when he was quite the player. Funny the way this thread has developed... Bruce studied classical piano as a child and it certainly shows in stuff like "The Nearest Faraway Place". Agree about Carl and Dennis. To say nothing of David. But what about the poor rhythm guitarist? Left out in the cold as usual! Alan's instrumentalizing credits could supply an entire rhythm section, plus banjo. And of course Brian plays (or played) the studio like no other.

"Feel Flows" is the first (and almost last) BB song to include an extended instrumental workout over a repeating pattern. The only other to do this (to equally stunning effect) is "Leaving This Town".
With all due respect to Dennis, I wouldn't change a note of this album.

Surely singers are musicians too (as in "making music")? Perhaps instrumentalist is a better word for someone who plays a musical instrument. I rather think AGD means "What if The Beach Boys were not musical at all?" Forgive me if I'm wrong...

Here, at long last, is a palindrome for Brian, co-starring his beagle and some bitch:
"Defray", said debonair Banana, "Mañana!" Brian: "O bed!" Daisy arfed. WHOA, John. They're queueing up! I feel like "Editor Al" to Brian. You've made YOURSELF yet another HAIKUpalindrome (as if you didn't know, only 2 syllables gotta go - I'm not sure how)... I have a solution----of a kind. (I'm assuming I can treat Brian as a single syllable.) If you remove the "o" from debonair, you can squeeze it onto one line. Add a spot more Spanish and you get: "Defray", said deb'nair Banana, "Mi mañana... Brian? Bed!!" Daisy arfed.

What if nobody could play worth a crap, but they could sing and harmonize really well. Would they have soldiered on? With Brian at the helm? Undoubtedly. From Wikipedia (bless it): "A musician (or instrumentalist) is a person who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented. Anyone who composes, conducts, or performs music may also be referred to as a musician." It just means that others would have always provided the instrumental backing.
