Great! Thanks, Horse.

I defy anyone to keep still while listening to it...

This next song is in French. The melody/arr./beat is good enough to disregard it, as well as bad vocals. go figure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx5-02gWlmU

So you're obsessed with its badness? Grin  It's jaunty enough, I suppose, and utterly inoffensive...

This is the sort of stuff I had to put up with when listening to French radio stations in the early to mid '60s in the hope of hearing the latest US 45s (some of which never got played----or even released----in the UK). The French were more up to date than the Brits in that respect.

Carrie & Lowell

Tame Impala's cover of "That's All for Everyone" which I may or may not have posted about before.

I love the original but this is superb too----my goodness:

Perhaps I've misjudged TI and should give them a serious try. Which one album would you suggest, M?

If you like some 60s earthy R'n'B sounds, check this out, you'll love it:

The Jesters - Cadillac man + My babe

Thanks, Rocker. "Cadillac Man" is a corker! (I must confess to preferring Little Walter's original of "My Babe".)

Great idea for a topic, Thorgill. There's so much great Scandinavian music out there----I'm discovering it all the time.

Metal is very big in your part of the world. This is the Swedish band Ghost:

I'm not a major metal fan but this is very tasty...

Another stonker from that year of years, 1966. I used to own this on 45. Love that dirty water...

Thank you for not using the name I have recently been dubbed.

That's a shame, john. Any love for the Shins or Fleet Foxes or Tame Impala at all? Another three I adore, so...

As for Fleet Foxes, I have Helplessness Blues, which I remember liking----another album I must revisit soon.

And guess what happened this afternoon? I'd forgotten just how good it was!

Thanks, Will. Though I must confess to preferring The Byrds' fantastic original (I hope M and Bubs didn't mind me giving it a sneak listen)...

Have a good weekend yourself. :=(

Then made chocolate cookies & fresh tea. good thing about living with cat is that the cat doesn't like these foods, so there's many cookies left for tomorrow.

4136  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: John K's Palindrome Topic on: September 23, 2016, 12:26:43 PM
The theme of this palindrome is Mike's notorious rant at the 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Regrettably, "interstescene" proved impossible to reverse!

R.E.M., Mubarak? Nah! Spot pom turbomaniac. Camp Paul fan: "I'm a Jagger." O no! Design ivory ID (Dinah's). Alf (Leo) jams telegram. Did Tina, as harmony, bore Ross/Boss ex-attorney...? OK. O Yoko yen! "Rot, taxes!" sobs sore Robyn. Om, Rahsaan. (It did.) Marge lets Ma Joel flash an ID. DIY roving is e-donor. Egg a jam in a 'flu app. Macca in a mob rut. Mop-Top! Shankar a bummer??

I have an illegal copy of Wincing The Night Away, which I haven't played in years. Must rectify that soon...

A while back I somehow found my way to James Mercer's Broken Bells. I started on After the Disco before general opinion drove me towards the debut, which I loved.

Same goes for Kevin Parker's Pond----Hobo Rocket is, well, a blast. Smokin

As for Fleet Foxes, I have Helplessness Blues, which I remember liking----another album I must revisit soon.

I don't hate the three other artists (SJS, BH and VW)----they just don't register with me. Anyway, it would be weird if I liked everything you like. Grin

U.S. Bonds' 1961 US #1 "Quarter To Three" has one of the wildest intros of all time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmOib324M7M

Great song. It was a a favourite of the Beatles and also, one of those rare cases of a track that was actually an instrumental first.

Here's the original version, "A Night With Daddy G" by the Church Street Five, before the lyrics were added to make it "Quarter to Three":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAcy6jkLN7I

The intro reminds me of this great record.

Bobby Day - Little bitty pretty one

Great tracks all. I like most of Duane Eddy's 45s but this one is way, way up on another level:

Hi, M (I refuse to call you what they've decided on over there, hahaha).

These artists----and, I regret to say, Vampire Weekend----are where our musical tastes tend to drift apart somewhat. All three make little or no impression on me. Protomartyr and Chastity Belt are a different matter! (Any other Hardly Art-ists you'd recommend?)

I'm still out on your current favourite----waiting to hear her latest album complete, I suppose...
4140  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Old Record Parade on: September 22, 2016, 07:48:08 AM
"Jeepers Creepers". My favorite version is by Paul Whiteman which they used in lame B-standard horror movies. It's jolly good, as is Tony Bennett's.

How about a link in future? Then we can hear what you're enthusing about. I'll do the honours this time:

Whiteman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP0rq4bPVUE

4144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite songs by the boys on: September 21, 2016, 03:05:33 AM
There can't be many bands around that elicit favourite top tens from fans that don't share a single title (e.g. DonnyL's and mine).

I don't think even The Beatles could manage that. Talk about a rich and varied body of work!
4145  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Old Record Parade on: September 20, 2016, 01:55:50 PM
The 60s brought some of the best R'n'B records ever made imo. Listen to this for example (produced by Leiber&Stoller btw):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prlWGe2EHro

I'd never given a thought to where that song came from, but this is stunning. So is gf's Barbara Lewis song (which I heard at the time it was released). Those backing vocals!

The US charts in the early '60s were certainly full of surprises. Dick and Dee Dee's "The Mountain's High", a huge favourite of mine, was utterly out of left field (and a B-side to boot) but reached #2 in 1961. That vocal stack is really weird but it works!

03. Can't Wait Too Long (2fer version)
04. Feel Flows
05. Don't Worry, Baby
06. I'm Waiting For The Day
07. Pet Sounds
08. Barbara Ann
09. I'm So Young
10. I Was Made To Love Her

Goodness, there are so many great old records! This is one of my earliest musical memories. That last "you" unnerved me even then...

It's "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos:

I just came across this song on "my" board and was knocked out by it----again. What an astonishing track! Chills-down-the-spinesville...

aw yeah the last one is purple vinyl be jealous.

Hey M. I can only see a ? for #3 but the code tells me it's Angel Olsen's My Woman. I'm sure I'd be jealous if I could see it. Grin
Not my copy, although this is the store that I bought it from.

Unfortunately not. Thanks for trying anyway. Maybe there'll be a Netherlands-friendly version up before long...
