No question, but I thought people might enjoy my wife's summation of the members of the beach boys after I praised her at recognising Mike's voice as I gave her one of my earphones (listening to his book).

"He's the guy who likes the beach that wears the hat. Then there's the dead drummer guy, the chubby guy, the guy who took over from the leader, the guy who got really fat and the short guy with the blonde hair."

Needless to say, after training her up to love and know the beach boys during our 8 years of marriage I've helped her to hit on the most important aspects of each of them!  LOL

 LOL LOL

Thank you so much!!!

You're welcome. :=)

I was thinking... perhaps it's a good idea to make the second chord in bars 6 and 8 of the verse an open E chord (no G#). Then that descending figure (G - F# - F# - E) comes across better.

Not today, but Friday. I attended a recital by the Romanian pianist Radu Lupu. I think the term "living legend" is applicable in his case. He played Haydn (Andante con variazioni), Schumann (the astonishing Fantasia in C) and, after the intermission, Tchaikowsky (The Seasons). It was like being transported back to a 19th-century salon! The Schumann in particular blew my mind.

I asked this question on the Jan & Dean message board but got no response, and since this is a J&D related thread, I'll ask here---

Does anyone know the chords for "Girl, You're Blowing My Mind"?

Hi Nate. I knocked these out this evening ( I needed a break!). I'd be most grateful if gf2002 or someone else similarly informed about chords and how to write them out would given it a listen through and change anything where necessary. (This letter after the forward slash is the bass note on the three occasions where this deviates from the root position.)

Why wouldn't there be an evil one? Google this:

"Batman Faces Palindrome"

Ha. As if he wasn't busy enough already!

And now----the seasons in BB titles:

L.A.: Penniman, Tupac, Terragni (R.P.'s "Little" by name)... edit summer or Dennis. May bad 007 fill a fret! N.I.W.? Nil in winter. Fall, if 700 dab yams in Ned Rorem: "Must I deem any belt 'til spring?" [Arr. (etc.): A Putnam in Nepal]

For those who think I make up some of these names, Terragni was an architect who designed iffy stuff for Il Duce and Ned Rorem is a composer who effectively stifled his career early on by publishing juicy diaries.

"Her Face Forms In Summertime" is one that comes immediately to mind:

& again ask question, it got backpage, john k might've missed it -  did you see "Battleship Potemkin"? It's regarded Eisenstein's masterwork.

Yes, I did miss it. And no, I didn't see it (yet). I did see part one of Ivan the Terrible donkey's years ago, unfortunately with overdubbed English dialogue! But Nevsky is a real obsession----not sure why... Maybe it's the Good vs. Evil thing. And it's spectacular beyond belief. And of course there's the extraordinary music...

I'm not sure when I'll find the time but I'll have a go. Hopefully someone else with more time on their hands will do it first. If not, I'll do the honours----although it may be a while before I get round to it...

I saw him in '72 with ELP at a pollwinners' concert, with Tarkus in tow:

Mark A. Moore is your man. Your best bet would be to PM him, assuming he doesn't see this first...

This is one of the saddest pieces I know so it's most appropriate here. Rest in peace, sir.

This is bound to have the purists screaming sacrilege but I think it's great. Vivaldi's Four Seasons does tend to get up one's nose after the 555th hearing, so kudos to Max Richter for respectfully "recomposing" it. See what you think:

At least, I'd like to watch it. (Truth of the matter is that it's developing into an unhealthy obsession.)

I'm getting it for Christmas. I should have got it for Sinterklaas (see link) but it got lost in the shuffle. Damn.

Three modes of transport in BB song titles (with a nod to the Tour de France):

No e-cars? Planes iron air data----obverse, Wes. Rev boat, Adrian. O risen Alps, race on!

This is the stuff that transports me to that place in my head that still resides in the year before the Beatles hit.  Sweet stuff indeed.  Glad you folks are out there to share these memories.

Glad to oblige, donald. Yes, that pre-British Invasion year gave us all some great American music, some of the best ever.

Here's Darlene in festive mood. Magnificent!

My favorite Eydie Gorme - who I discovered via "What's My Line?" game - has this record:

She's better known as duo with Steve Lawrence (husband, good singer & frequent guest in WML as well) but at the same time was billed as single artist. She sang jazz, pop, lounge etc. She's really good.

Great song. Love that organ solo! Like Elvis's "Bossa Nova Baby", it's a song about the dance...

Heard this yesterday on a Dutch rock'n'roll website. It proves once again that two minutes is quite long enough in the hands of a master!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrzFvZhnhMo

Would that be Johnnie Johnson on the dazzling piano work or Lafayette Leake? Rocker will probably know...
I can answer 3D - it's Johnnie Johnson.

Thanks!

Found this handy list for Leake:

Johnson's isn't there, apparently because it's too long.  Grin

Shame on us to overlook it.

Love Dennis's voice, love his songs.

Belated happy birthday, you wonderful and much-missed man.

Busy Doin' Nothin' is in the new Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

That's awesome! What episode exactly?

I don't remember but its either episode 2 or 3 of the new season, it's playing in the background in Logan's apartment.

I've been through the soundtrack listings of all seven series (no life!) and it's not listed. Embarrassed

S3E21 includes "Catch A Wave"...

http://www.what-song.com/Tvshow/75/Gilmore-Girls/e/3351

...and I noticed "Wendy" (S1E1, S1E4), "GOK" (S1E12) and "Be True..." (S2E11) sung by other artists...

Sounds good, Mari. I heard something by BH years ago, didn't warm to it and left them alone after that. I do like this though.

Regards to you and Mr Waves. :=)

Heard the slow movement from Ravel's G Major Piano Concerto on the radio this morning in the wake of some awful news from Oakland, CA.

This is respectfully dedicated to the victims of that tragic event:

I could do a few days' worth on 1966 alone. I voted it the best year in rock during a radio station poll last year. I forgot what year actually won the poll.

Here is a sublimely great record, "Mr. Dieingly Sad" by The Critters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLRR5dtY3jM

Oh yes! Lovely record. I preferred their version of "A Younger Girl" to the Spoonful's...

Thanks for reminding me of that Outsiders song. I bought their follow-up ("Girl In Love") when it was released. It must be one of the saddest songs I've ever heard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y0uPRvUEYg

As for 1966 as a whole, I couldn't agree more. (Others opt for '65 or even '67 but I don't buy that.) What an incredible year for music!

Some body parts in BB/BW song titles:

Head an act on heart, amuse masses. Oh pro-manatee, fool a hair, a shoulder----rats! A garden made H. Truman eye Namur. The Damned raga starred Lu. Oh sari, a halo. O feet anamorphoses! Same Sumatra, eh? Not Canada, eh?
