Perhaps if I'd googled stats instead of sales...

Thanks a lot, PF. Now I know where to look in future... ;=)

Wishes for the Beach Boys in 2017:

Just end it, please!

Wise words indeed. But wait until after I've seen Mike's Boys in June. Grin

Hopefully this is tasty.

Please let us know if it was. It looks very tasty (hi there, Mari).

Whenever I feel the urge to salivate I browse this topic. It works every time! LOL

If (you can get past the repetitiveness) anyone has any idea for lyrics for this little phrase/bit, whether it be actual lyrics or just an idea for what they could be about. Either or would really help with thinking of something to go around this musically cause this is all I have that's remotely substantial. Thanks.

It reminds me of something slowly revolving, like a musical toy. "Going round in circles" is a little negative but that's the phrase that came to mind.

I do like "La Lune" and agree with SCZ that it's complete the way it is. :=)

This may have been asked before (if so, my apologies) but is anything known about the number of copies sold to date of the two BB autobiographies? Or at least how the two compare in terms of sales?

An aside: Brian's has been translated into Dutch, so probably into other languages too. No idea about Mike's...
3756  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Saddest songs on: January 10, 2017, 03:39:36 AM
These are some that aren't objectively the saddest (that'd be impossible anyway, though 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' kinda takes the cake) but these are the songs that even just thinking about them hurt:

As for the most lifelessly depressing songs that make me wanna die:

AC, I'm sure you find the time to smile but looking at your lists I'd be hard pressed to know when.

Just kidding! Grin

The descending bass and ascending flutes in "I'm Waiting For The Day". Followed by the rest of this supremely uplifting song.

I've been listening to a lot of Bull of Heaven recently and have been pleasantly surprised by what I've heard so far.

It's also good music to work to, as it's predominantly wordless and has no radical changes in dynamics.

At just over 18 minutes, "String Theory Verified" is quite short by their standards:

Here's one that I recently discovered. I'm not a fan of Genesis but it turns out they have a pretty good first album from back in the 60s. Here's a great track from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iawItFRdjQM

It is a great track. I like Selling England... and that's enough Genesis for me really. But this is very nice. Thanks, CSM.

I'm back with Mike's book. I didn't stop because of the contents----it's a terrific read so far. It's just my reader's block. That's why I mainly do word and number puzzles. But now I'm back. I've just been reading about the cunning linguist. Fascinating.

Would it be right to say you're George fan?

Imo Roger Waters is the best Pink Floyd. Written great songs & good singer.

I love All Things Must Pass and many of George's Beatles compositions but I'm not familiar with much more than that. And I love a lot of John's things, especially the ones that tug at the heart.

I have this love-hate thing with Pink Floyd. Still out on them, in many ways...
3762  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Saddest songs on: January 09, 2017, 06:32:01 AM
Upbeat songs can be sad too. Take Freda Payne's "Band Of Gold":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daxiMb0rITA

"What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" does what "God Only Knows" does----the bass steers clear of the tonic. The difference being that "GOK" is uplifting in the extreme while the Jimmy Ruffin song is just plain heartbreaking:

3763  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Welcome thread on: January 09, 2017, 01:51:39 AM
That's a very good place to start.

Been listening to Off the Ground----and enjoying it! (Macca's solo discography is pretty well a closed book to me.) Is Flowers in the Dirt a good next step, you think, Will?

Thought I'd check in here before going to bed.  I'm still keyed up from watching my favorite football team win in the first round of the play-offs.  I've actually just been looking around your forum, but couldn't find anything to get in trouble with.

Ahh,  Mr. McCartney...  I think Off The Ground is a bit better album, but Flowers in the Dirt is very very good.  I got to see two of the shows on that tour in Berkeley, California.  Then Paul did not swing thru the Bay Area* for the Off The Ground tour.  He had a special Tv concert that I saw that year, and of course he did another live album and DVD of the show.  What I would like to have released is the show he did when they opened back up the Ed Sullivan Theatre.  Think that was 1991 just as David Letterman was getting started with his show there.  I recorded it on vhs, but a DVD would be much appreciated.  I would like that a lot more than what he choses to release these days.  Is that what you meant by, "discography is pretty well a closed book for me"?  I don't care too much for what he has done in the last few years.  He has a nice song now and then, but he hasn't been the same since Linda died, not to me.

* I saw you ask what that was the other day.  It's the area that encompasses San Francisco/ Berkeley/ Oakland/ and the area to the South of San Francisco, down to San Jose.  The area South of San Francisco is called South Bay, but it is still part of the Bay Area.  Google Earth it and take a look.

Okay, I better be off to bed. -Will

Thanks for the info, Will. By "closed book" I mean I'm utterly unfamiliar by it (except the debut and BOTR). But there's a reason. It's a bit like my aversion to Jagger and Waters----he just jars, for some reason. It's a shame really, because I'm sure millions and millions of people can't be wrong about his music. Which is why I'm now making cautious forays into Maccaland. Any tips are always welcome. :=)

It's that day again (although it seems Shostakovich was in fact depicting the Soviet Union's brutal suppression of the then recent Hungarian Uprising):

New Bowie EP on iTunes today: No Plan, which includes Lazarus, the title track, and two other tunes. I believe they're from the musical.

On the indie side of life, a new Shins album is announced for a March release, with 2 tracks available already.

Thanks, captain, for launching this topic. I'm always open to suggestions about new music. :=)

Okay, AC----not right now, but for ever.

Two that spring immediately to mind are the swirllng synth texture at the words "long promised road" and Brian's penultimate "anyhow" in "We'll Run Away"...
Now you're talking, john. Thanks for co-operation. police
Rule of thumb: Read the whole thread before chiming in. & it's not like super-long thread either (yet).

When your span of attention is so short that you give up reading Mike's book after 10 pages, believe me this thread is long. Grin

Very nice indeed, sir, particularly "Almond Grove". Great lyrics too!

"I guess I could wake up on an old tin stove
Aunt Jemima looking down at me
I guess I could wake up in an almond grove
Fifty thousand nuts up in a tree"

The Nightwish are a Finnish band doing a metal/folk/symphonic melange that I consider archetypically Finnish. Though not usually a fan of metal, I like them a lot: worthy to check out.

Which one album of theirs would you recommend, Thorgil?

Another death, I'm afraid. On the positive side, the conductor Georges Prêtre reached the ripe old age of 92. Although it seems he was best known for his interpretations of opera, I have a wonderful LP of orchestral music by Debussy under his baton.

Here's the maestro together with another legend, the soprano Victoria de los Ángeles, in a 1963 performance of "L'invitation au voyage" by Henri Duparc:

3773  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Drugs: Heroes or Villains? on: January 06, 2017, 01:40:39 AM
I don't think pot is necessarily a villain. I have never had it myself but even many doctors have said it is safe. I was thinking more about LSD, Heroine, Cocaine, etc

As a sensitive type, I can count the number of times I've toked on the fingers of two hands.

On one occasion it went very wrong----seems the stuff was opiated. Not nice.

So I'd still say dope/pot/marijuana is a villain.

Association, "Pandora's golden heebie jeebies": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewiB_Xy5uR4

My second favourite of theirs after "Mary". :=)

Roy Wood was on Jools Holland's end-of-year Hootenanny show, looking and sounding good.

Here's a favourite of mine from The Move, their 1966 debut, "Night Of Fear":
