201  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favorite instrumentals on: October 09, 2020, 10:47:24 AM
I discovered Treason Theory's "Eggs In The Pan" while looking for candidates for a musical topic about eggs at the previous incarnation of my hobby forum, strange place that it was. There's only very scant online information about Treason Theory. I adapted this from Facebook:

"Treason Theory Music Productions is an independent musical recording and production organization. The main members are Maurice Cunningham and Rob Harris. Other musicians can and have joined in to contribute to T.T.M.P.'s recordings and more are certainly welcome. All songs are written, played and recorded by Treason Theory, unless otherwise noted. We are neither treasonous, nor have any real theories about treason. It's just a name."

How could I forget this extraordinary duet by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra? (Slowdive did a great cover.)

I discovered another great cover the other day by Rowland S Howard and Lydia Lunch:

Lydia Lunch (vocals)
Rowland S Howard (vocals, guitar)
Genevieve McGuckin (piano)
Barry Adamson (bass)
Mick Harvey (drums)

The Birthday Party's Mick Harvey, who shared guitar duties with Rowland S Howard, mans the kit on "Dead Joe", as regular drummer Phill Calvet was unable to nail the rhythm. Later Calvet was ousted from the band entirely, leaving it a quartet with Harvey on drums. "Dead Joe" is the second track on The Birthday Party's 1982 album Junkyard

204  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / R.I.P. Johnny Nash (born 1940) on: October 08, 2020, 02:58:34 AM
"I Can See Clearly Now" was a song that opened the act of a nationally famous Dutch singer "my" band used to accompany from time to time. Johnny's version was a ray of light during a dark time in my life. Rest in peace, sir.

Last week I watched the 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, a film I'd seen long before reading the book and seemed to remember liking. I was tired that day, however, and drifted off occasionally. So to do the film credit, I watched it again the next evening -- and loved it!

Loved the book too. With thanks to the wonderful person who introduced me to it. Smiley

Today being World Animal Day, and considering the present state of the animal kingdom thanks to its most selfish species, how about this warning issued in 1971 by Captain Beefheart and his wife Jan Van Vliet, who wrote the lyrics:

"Clean up the air / And treat the animals fair." No such luck, unfortunately.

"Time's runnin' out" -- don't forget these words were written nearly half a century ago:

Nico Muhly is a name I first bumped into in a post by JH -- and this is the work of his she mentioned hearing at mass. Bright Mass with Canons is clearly not for your average churchgoer but I think it's gorgeous! I think it was the passage beginning at 7:53 that threw the more strait-laced members of the congregation that Sunday.

Last week I heard a work on Dutch classical radio by Florence Price, her Symphony No. 1 in E Minor (1931-32). This had the distinction of being the first symphony written by an African-American woman to be performed by a major orchestra. It has a whiff of Dvořák about it but only a whiff. I really like the mood it conveys. Its four movements are as follows:

No idea whether this has been linked already, but after watching the 2013 film adaptation of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby on two successive nights it struck me what a great job Jay-Z made of the OST. This is "Bang Bang" by will.i.am ft. Shelby Spalione:

Been reading ancient solo Beatles album discussions at Beatles.ru. I'd like to hear stuff that didn't hear previously. Today listened to Mind Games, John's 1973 album.

I'll be interested to know what you think of Walls and Bridges when you get there. Actually it's the only post-Imagine album of John's I'm familiar with but I think it's super. "#9 Dream" is a fantastic song!

New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies was one of a whole raft of varied albums I bought after reading Mark Prendergast's The Ambient Century:

This is cheating, since "Jazz Thing" from Ultimate Spinach's 1968 album Behold and See is basically a pop song with a jazzy instrumental break. But it may serve to bring this topic back to life...

Given that Jimi Hendrix passed away 50 years ago today, I figured it was a good time to re-listen to Electric Ladyland for the first time in years. Fantastic album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibJ3VMt6yfU

I'm criminally unfamiliar with this album. A few tracks, of course, including this extraordinary single (with an extraordinary B-side):

https://vimeo.com/313662875

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_of_the_Midnight_Lamp

Oh yeah, I'd never given Burning Of The Midnight Lamp much of a look-in, but these days it's certainly a favourite of mine as far as Hendrix tracks go - and a fresh alternative to the classic but overplayed hits like Hey Joe, Purple Haze and All Along The Watchtower

I don't know whether you're from the USA, UW, but in the UK the first two you mention and "The Wind Cries Mary" were not on the debut album. The most glaring omission from the US edition is the stunning "Red House", the studio version of which I can't find anywhere online. So instead, here's the preposterous B-side of "Lamp", "The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice":

I've become fascinated by dubstep. Seven Lions aka Jeff Montalvo, purveyor of melodic dubstep and trancestep, is my main man in this department. This is the mix I've been listening to on and off for days now:

Recently I discovered dubstep, most noticeably in the hands of Seven Lions (born Jeff Montalvo). This is his subtle, stunning remix of the song "Satellite" by Oceanlab. I dedicate this to a dear friend "half a world away":

Only just discovered this band called Levitation Room over the last few days - a fairly new band, and rather obscure for the most part. Was not expecting to be completely blown away by this track they released in 2018. Which, funnily enough, is called Warmth Of The Sun and is not a cover of the Beach Boys classic.

Lovely track, UW. Good call! Smiley

I see they've also done a blissed-out song called "Friends". Is there a pattern emerging? Grin

Velvett Fogg's self-titled 1969 album is okay but nothing special. The best track is the album opener, "Yellow Cave Woman":

Lovely album, S-a. Roll Eyes

The OP ruled out mashes and parodies but not samples, so why not? Grin

In the same vein, here's Betty Boo's "Doin' The Do", which samples Reparata and The Delrons' "Captain Of Your Ship":

These were the top 10 60s songs released during the summer months, as voted on by listeners:

10.  Sweet Caroline
  9.  Surfer a Girl
  8.  Unchained Melody
  7.  Windy
  6.  House of the Rising Sun
  5.  Under the Boardwalk
  4.  I Get Around
  3.  See You in September
  2.  California Girls
  1.  Summer in the City

Something this old lady didn’t know about the Beatles. Didn’t know that they released another album between Abbey Road and Let It Be.  Was somehow unaware of a Hey Jude album.

Spent a nice morning riding around listening to the Beatles. They were doing all the songs they recorded in order. Happily I came in during the Help! album and not the White Album.
Interesting that I’m Down and Yesterday were recorded the same day.

Thanks for the top ten, Lizzie.

I see the Hey Jude album was released pretty well everywhere but in the UK at the time. It doesn't mean a light to me either.
