Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson's Secret Bedroom Tapes - LA Weekly 1-30-14

I think the hope was that such an article would spur BRI towards opening up the vaults in a more liberal fashion, and sticking some sort of label on them (perhaps trying to evoke the totally different and much closer to accurately-described Bob Dylan "Basement Tapes") would make a more succinct headline than "Various Unreleased Brian Wilson Recordings."
it could be argued that the inclusion of Brian's '75 rendition of In the Back of My Mind on NPP was a direct result of this article. there are several titles mentioned that even the most hardcore fans have still never heard. here's hoping they all see proper release

I thought that Le'id in Hawaii cover was perfect... incredibly well made... looks like its right out of the Capitol design department circa 1967. I actually have a screen grab of that cover on my phone.
Did you ever do a back cover?
not my designs, but I agree on the Lei'd In Hawaii cover. it's great... although the black & white photo doesn't quite fit, in my opinion here's my alternate: I wonder if there is a color photo of the Boys actually getting Lei'd in Hawaii? Dennis, anyway. big surprise

Here are the songs that have official releases
Good Vibrations 30 years box set: H.E.L.P. is on the Way, Games Two can Play, I just Got My Pay Endless Harmony: Break Away "demo" Made in California: Sail Plane Song, We're Together Again, Old Man River, Back Home (1970), Where is She?, Soulful Old Man Sunshine, California Feelin' demo (1974.) No Pier Pressure: In the Back of my Mind (1975) California Feeling 2: Lucy Jones A World of Peace must come: America, I know You
"Soulful Old Man Sunshine" was on Endless Harmony prior to being reissued on Made In California, but otherwise looks like an accurate list to me. Several others have appeared in altered form (i.e. "Won't You Tell Me" was on the Sunrays - Vintage Rays box set with the same instrumental track but with a Rick Henn lead vocal), but not in the version described by Chidester in his article. Lee and the original version of Sail Plane Song on Endless Harmony is superior to the one we got on MIC

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Were the Beach Boys a Progressive Band?

Good Vibrations remains the most progressive single of all time.
indeed, Brian is one of the most progressive figures in popular music but there was always some portion of the Beach Boys organization and audience who resisted such radical innovation. as a result, Brian and the band's musical evolution was stunted to some degree and we ended up with a nostalgic retread like Do It Again in 1968. most fingers point at Mike for adhering to "the formula" and eventually turning the band into the oldies revue it remains to this day... not to mention their shameless political alignments of the 8os and beyond.
does another band exist with such starkly contrasting vision within its own ranks? Brian most certainly created music that interprets and informs the time in which it was created. as someone recently stated: Brian is an artist, Mike is an entertainer.

yes i'm serious and seriously giddy at the idea of folks discovering Wild Honey for the first time. i realize most of the newfound attention is going to the song "Darlin" and not the album it came from, but i bet a bunch of folks will dig a little deeper thanks to this TV show.
how freaking cool would a Wild Honey/Friends tour be?? or at least a few shows. i bet Brian would be down

I wonder how many people will discover the Wild Honey album thanks to this episode? more than a few I'd imagine, which is pretty cool to think about. also cool to think about: an expanded reissue of Wild Honey with stereo and bonus tracks, a Wild Honey tour, Wild Honey documentary DVD, Wild Honey t-shirts and assorted merchandise, Wild Honey tribute album and concert... basically all the things this fantastic album deserves!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if the Beach Boys had fired Mike Love?

yeah the idea that the Beach Boys needed Mike's emceeing to keep the momentum going while they constantly replaced broken guitar strings is ridiculous. The Grateful Dead are famous for tuning incessantly between songs AND never uttering a word, and they did alright. Mike's banter actually had the opposite effect... he stilted the momentum searching for something clever or witty (but often just kind of awkward) to say. his song intros ramble on and on at times, and i'd tend to think the band and the audience were at least as annoyed as they were amused by the long-winded guy in the turban. in those days especially, people went to concerts to BOOGIE, MAN!!! not hear bad stand-up. despite the beard and the garb, any hope Mike had of being perceived as cool or hip went *poof* as soon as he opened his mouth.

just to clarify, my comment about someone being female and finding Stamos attractive wasn't meant as a sexist remark. it's a simple fact that the majority of his fans are women. when he comes onstage at a Mike & Bruce show, or as a guest on The View or Ellen, it's mainly if not entirely women who are screaming and cheering for him. obviously there are also women who find him vain, smug, insincere, untalented, womanizing, etc. which could explain why he and the Lovester get along so famously.

Mike Love is no teen idol. Right, and never was back in the day either. He conjured up the older uncle or perhaps grandfather image that made him not fit in with the rest of the group. That's interesting. Video footage of him has him pantomiming away like crazy and making out like he's really hot. I sort of assumed he was considered cool, but not even in 1964? check out The Lost Concert. quick pans to the crowd reveal an audience both amused and confused by the Lovester's dorky stage antics. cool he ain't. Dennis on the other hand...

Hey! wait a minute bossy! Your assuming that all females, or at least the one in question, like Stamos. It might come as a surprise to you to know that not all women go for weedy, swarthy, oily haired guys. A brain helps, and I'm not so sure in this instance we have a whole one in action....
hey beebs! i wasn't inferring that all females find him attractive, only that the ones who do tend to be women. no offense intended and i do appreciate your adamant and descriptive proclamation
