176  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Observer: It’s Time to Destroy ‘the Legend of Brian Wilson’ on: June 03, 2016, 11:20:10 AM
this article is not really even worth consideration, full of falsehoods and seemingly no research. more of an opinion piece really, and an awful one at that. but this line may be the most misguided thing I've ever read:

Quote
Foskett has been with the Beach Boys for 34 years, longer than Carl or Dennis Wilson were in the band

i mean, wow.
177  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BW included in RollingStone's Summer Tour Preview on: June 01, 2016, 08:06:50 AM
Brian is quoted in a blurb about the PetSounds tour in the latest RS. I found the last line intriguing...

Quote
Now, he's even thinking about his next tour: "I'd love to do Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) in its entirety. Those are some great songs!"

I'll take Wild Honey and Friends while yer at it, Mr. Wilson.
178  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: May 28, 2016, 11:48:11 PM

not THAT nice. yikes:

Quote
Unfortunately, the rest of the first set didn't quite hit those heights, the band still sounded great, but the songs were Wilson's lesser efforts, like In My Room, Surfer Girl and Don't Worry Baby. All decent in their own right, if only hinting at what Wilson was really capable of, but just not strong enough to be played one after the other for the guts of an hour.

179  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 23, 2016, 11:46:09 AM
one of the things I want most to hear is the extended alternate mix of This Whole World. maybe Sunflower will get an expanded release in 2020?
180  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 21, 2016, 11:44:47 AM
did anyone really think we'd ever get the '75 version of In The Back Of My Mind? or a SMiLE boxset? or the gems on MIC? and yet

it's simple really... if there's unreleased material and the public expresses interest in it, why not put it out?
Brian and his camp seem to have figured this out awhile ago. Brian is well aware of all the recordings he's still sitting on and it's gradually been released over the past several years. no reason to believe they won't make more of it available in the coming months and years.
181  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 20, 2016, 10:31:35 PM
I realize the whole Bedroom Tapes moniker is just an umbrella term for all manner of unreleased material. it's a buzzword that indeed created some buzz... and what better time to release such a collection than later this year, to coincide with Brian's book?

Brian is basically saying a release like this will likely happen, but I love how some people still think he has no idea what he's talking about  Roll Eyes
182  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 19, 2016, 12:38:17 PM
“Yeah, I might do that later this year,” he says when asked if the tapes might ever be released.

Brian also says he plans to keep touring. good stuff

183  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A petition for Mike to include THAT'S NOT ME on: May 14, 2016, 12:49:15 PM
That's Not Me is one of my all-time favorite songs by anyone. I hate that it's been so overlooked by the touring group. Mike should definitely play it. and then retire for good.

but... that's not M.E.

I'd be glad to design a photoshop for the cause if you think it will help, Autotune.  Wink
184  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 05, 2016, 11:09:22 PM
sounds like Greece-ee-ah-see to me too. makes sense after the line about gay Paris-see. there's really no mistaking the "ee" sound of Greece even if you don't hear the Gr... it's not an "oo" sound.

also there's no background vocals during that section on In Concert and it still sounds like Greece. because it is.

I watched the film & Gary in it. I just wondered who of the Wrecking Crew he played.

Al Deloray

Pretty sure its Delory

ugh. the list goes on and on folks

Tears is schlock, but it's not embarassing

when your favorite band records schlock and includes it on an otherwise solid album, it's embarrassing.
187  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love book out in September on: March 29, 2016, 01:49:17 PM
not a great cover, agreed.

Mike looks pretty sleazy, but that's how he rolls. he should really stop with the praying hands in every damn shot.
interesting too that Mike seems somehow separate in the group shot and the furthest away with the Wilson brothers together in the foreground. as they should be. when you think about it, Brian even provided the book's title.

how about an alternate cover contest? here's my submission. Mike seemed to like it before:

and how has no one mentioned Bruce and his f@cking shorts??

or Here Comes the Night '79?

or Tears in the Morning?

it's just so damn catchy. I never said I don't love it, just that it's embarrassing

Help Me Rhonda sessions

Australia '78

Hey Little Tomboy

plenty of Dennis footage

almost any Mike Love vocal after the 6os, some before

almost any live performance footage of Mike, ever

basically just about anytime Mike has ever opened his mouth or appeared on camera. honestly... is there anyone more cringe-inducing than Mike?? he's right up there with Ted Cruz, Bill Cosby, etc.

I'm sure Mike would be cool with that.

it's a nice idea, but I imagine it would be hard to get past all the generic fun-in-the-sun imagery and have folks really take the music seriously.

and I'm sure Mike would be cool with that.
193  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Playlist: Brian In Space on: March 26, 2016, 03:02:20 PM
fun mix.

Cabinessence has the line about constellations and Wake the World mentions the stars, etc.

Sail Plane Song might be a good fit too.

What virgins?? (ducking)

Who knew that, just like "Johnny Carson," the way he (Rocky) keeps it up could make you cry (with tears of laughter)?

Reading this (in whole or in part, depending on one's level of stamina...) it really is amazing that the BBs survived the 70s--the second half of the decade (and '78-'79 in particular) was just brutal.

The question that should be asked here (IMO) is what Rocky may know about the financial history of Mike Love--a man who lives up to the line in "I Just Got My Pay" ("I like spending my money")...

Don't stop at 100,000, Rocky, go for a quarter-million! Hold out for the big bucks!!

Holy crap! Someone needs to do a cover of Johnny Carson, redone as: Raw---cky... Pamp---lin!! Totally serious!!

challenge accepted. another slow night here...
all in good fun, folks!  Grin

Don't you think this man saved Brian's life?
Maybe we should check with Brian's wife?

195  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Backing Vox 'Let's go away...' on: March 22, 2016, 02:13:41 PM
we should keep in mind Brian was very into combining instruments at this time to create a "new" instrument or sound, a la Phil Spector.

we may be hearing strings and flute in unison and/or something else
196  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Backing Vox 'Let's go away...' on: March 22, 2016, 02:10:22 PM
and to clarify, the hard "doo" sound we hear in the fade is a B note.
197  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Backing Vox 'Let's go away...' on: March 22, 2016, 01:54:27 PM
i don't think your soundcloud clip does justice to the bit in question, but I'm definitely hearing the do-doo's in the fade of the song. it's one of the only things in LGAFA that resembles a melody really. it's beautiful and I never really heard the vocal quality until you pointed it out, but I think it's just the strings fooling our ears. there's another ghostly "dooo" at around :57 (an Eb note) that sounds more like vibes to me
198  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Backing Vox 'Let's go away...' on: March 22, 2016, 01:32:56 PM
this thread is a testament to Brian's genius, that we can still discuss and possibly hear something new in a piece we've heard so many times.

I never heard anything that struck me as a vocal on LGAFA... until now.
still not sure if we're all talking about the same part(s), but I hear the do-doo's now and it doesn't strike me as flute. i believe it's a vocal-like effect created by strings, but I can't be sure. there is some tonal similarity to Brian or Carl, or even Marilyn as someone already stated.

speaking of tonal similarity, I've always thought the theremin line in IJWMFTT sounds uncannily like Brian.

200  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Bruce (and Gene Clark) on the Dating Game?? on: March 06, 2016, 10:59:25 AM
according to Gene Clark of the Byrds in the first minute of this radio interview, he appeared on the Dating Game with our buddy Bruce back in the day... I'm assuming it was before either achieved much success. sure would be a kick to see!

here's the interview:
