interesting stuff...!

back to SMiLE:

i'm wondering how much of "Can't Wait Too Long" dates back to SMiLE.
i'm pretty sure the instrumental bit at the end with bass, drums and organ was SMiLE-era, but how about the verses, etc?

that ending is heard on the 2-fer version but not on the boxset for some reason... it's great.

i also think it's a real shame that the H&V fade (aka false Barnyard) was left off BWPS.

just so I'm clear here.....

the sequencing of "Great Shape" into "I Wanna Be Around" never happened until BWPS?
1528  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / a SMiLE question or 3 on: May 22, 2008, 08:58:42 PM
1) was the original track of "I'm In Great Shape" (sax, bass & piano) connected to  "I Wanna Be Around"?

2) is there a name for the section that closes the cantina version of H&V found on the GV boxset? this same section closes the "H&V sections" track on the same disc. it features pizzicatto strings, harmonica and Brian's vocals.

3) at one point, didn't Brian say that "Surf's Up" would close the album?

thanks.
now let me think of a few more

my first reaction was, "Why'd they get Harland Williams to play Brian Wilson?"

Not forgetting the world's worst recorded banjo solo, of course...

now how can i HEAR this???

Quote
Cows In The Pasture (Fred Vail)
recorded April 4th-17th 1970
produced by Brian Wilson
Bethany Ann* - There's Always Something There To Remind Me* - Kittens, Kids & Kites - Lucky Billy - Black Man In Georgia - One Woman Won't Hold Me - Why Don't You Give Her To Me - If You're Not Loving, You're Not Living - All For The Love Of A Girl* - Only The Lonely* - Carolina On My Mind - My Way Of Life - A Fool Such As I* - You Pass Me By - I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You
[titles noted * had vocals recorded]

Fred Vail's connection with The Beach Boys began as a teenager in May 1963 when he staged a show in Sacramento, and continued as their promoter until they severed links amid some acrimony in the mid-seventies (although he remained especially close to Dennis). Exactly why Brian decided to embark on this particular project - a country album - just as the band were commencing the sessions that would result in Surf's Up is yet another minor BB mystery (unless, of course, Brian was making an oblique point; however it's more likely that he was merely doing a favor a friend). At five sessions over the course of two spring weeks, Brian produced tracks for the fifteen titles listed above, using such country luminaries as Glen D. Hardin, Buddy Emmons, Red Rhodes & James Burton.  As might have been expected, Brian then lost interest in the project, but not before vocals had been recorded for five songs. For pretty well all its known existance, the album was simply referred to as "Fred Vail's country album", but Kurt Ackerman recalls Bruce giving it this title at a Carnegie Hall gig just before he left the band. however, when questioned directly, Fred himself stated that the album had no title.
Possibility of release: given that a) the album is incomplete and b) Vail's voice has been described (by Brian) as "far out", exceedingly slim… but it would be interesting to hear Brian's sole foray into the country field.

I'm looking for a BBs sticker to slap on my steel guitar. Anyone know what's out there?

Was there a sticker included in the GV box set? I bought mine used, but it seems like I saw/heard about a decal being in there.

ok, I see your point. and of course Junior would sound great playing "Pet Sounds"...

ever heard Danny Gatton's instrumental version of "In My Room" on lap steel and guitar? beautiful.
1540  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stars & Stripes-sessions on: March 11, 2008, 11:03:22 AM

Junior Brown is cool too. I'm glad they at least put him on there.
He's a big car enthusiast too, so it makes sense he did "409"...

Refer my 'fluff' comment top of post. Sorry bossaroo!

Junior Brown is the real deal. He's a master of country guitar and steel guitar, he writes real country songs, he sounds like Ernest Tubb... hell, he even wrote a tune about ol' ET.  I think his big "hit" at that time was "My Wife Thinks You're Dead"... he uses humor in his music in a way that is sorely lacking in Nashville (and most everywhere else)... something Brian probably appreciates.

you just can't compare guys like James House, Collin Raye, or Doug Supernaw to Junior freaking Brown.

Junior's also crazy about surf guitar, so it makes even more sense for him to be included.

1542  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Some famous guitarists on BB sessions.. on: March 03, 2008, 12:04:56 PM
there's a version of "We're Together Again" with pedal steel and dobro, which was most likely Red Rhodes and James Burton respectively.

Buddy Emmons is probably the world's greatest pedal steel player, and he claims to have done a Beach Boys session or two... but doesn't remember what song/album it was. Anyone have any idea??? It would have been in the late 60s or early 70s when he was living out in L.A.
1543  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian to play UK 'Hits' Tour on: March 03, 2008, 11:57:12 AM
And here's the problem. Brian 08 thinks he is the Lovester...hence the hits.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvMpUMWT9uo&feature=related

that clip is great!

he sounded very comfortable and cool talking to the crowd, and he didn't really do any of the awkward hand gesturing and such...

he did do that little rooster strut at the beginning (!!!) which is really more of a Mick Jagger move.
thanks for posting!
1544  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stars & Stripes-sessions on: March 02, 2008, 10:34:27 PM
On the 'S&S' video, I'm pretty sure those shots of the boys singing around a mic are lip-sync'd or at least done after the fact... so it is possible that Brian did a falsetto part on the actual recording.

I too love Willie's interpretation of "Warmth"... but his voice is clearly not for everyone.  That scene where Mike comes in and tells him how to sing it is so hilarious and so uncomfortable at the same time. Willie handled him so well. And I love how Brian points out what an ass Mike made of himself.  LOL

It's a shame that 'S&S Vol. 1' was such a pandering attempt to cash in on the mainstream (speaking of Mike), instead of being a really solid tribute to American music. Country/Western and the Beach Boys... it doesn't get much more American than that. This album could have been so much better... but I'm still glad they did it.

I realize the entire project probably would never have happened if it weren't for the "hot new country" boom of the mid-90s, but I just wish they had focused more on the legends of country music and less on the flash-in-the-pan pretty boys  (James House anyone?) I would have really loved to hear George Jones or Merle Haggard sing a Wilson tune.

It's a crime that Tammy Wynette was left off the album too (I know they were planning a Vol.2, but still)... her scene in the video brings me to tears every time I see it, especially when you consider it was her final recording session.

1545  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Review on: February 27, 2008, 12:11:00 AM
Shane-
that guy's review and the references to architecture remind me of this quote by steel guitarist Susan Alcorn about Thelonious Monk:

"When I think of Monk's music, I think of mythic buildings -- elegant, gritty, and wise structures, buildings steeped in the past, but imbued with a strange modernity; you look at these structures so solid, but so delicately balanced that you are amazed that they don't just fall over. And if you went inside, you would find an inner logic that had for so long evaded you. And if you looked out the windows, you would see the rest of the world as oddly askew."
1546  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What guitar solo's or prominent parts did Glen Campbell play? on: February 13, 2008, 02:21:54 PM
somewhere he talks about how he played the intro riff on "Dance Dance Dance" wrong, but Brian liked it better that way. I assume that's his solo too... very rhythmic.

the title 'Adult/Child' always reminded me of 'Dumb Angel'... just not as good.

I'm a big fan of "I Wanna Pick You Up"... maybe it's sincere, maybe it's kinky, maybe it's a joke. I still love it.
The "pat, pat, pat" lyric is right up there with "I'd Love Just Once to See You" for most shocking/hilarious line to end a Beach Boy song.

I just saw this ad from the 50s and it got me wondering when the term "beach boy" was first used.
