it's an amazing album and quite avant garde in its way. the Classic Albums 'Anthem to Beauty' episode is great.

I stumbled on Bill Walker's website recently, he painted the cover art for Anthem... which wasn't completed when the album was released.
you can see the complete art here: http://www.billzart.net/showcase.php?gallery=anthem

A VOLUME OF WORK???

there is no volume of work, baldy! just the same tired shows night after night where you get to sing Brian Wilson songs and be the center of attention. and your voice went to sh!t some 20 or 30 years ago. but you never had much range to begin with, so it's less noticeable. god what a creep
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jerry Garcia's favorite album was ... on: January 25, 2017, 01:13:47 PM
the ironic thing is a lot of people own Smiley Smile for the single fact that GV is on there.

I don't listen much to those versions of Wind Chimes or Wonderful... just don't hold up to the SMiLE versions in my opinion.

but I am forever in love with Little Pad. it's right near the end of my SMiLE mix combined with Diamond Head.

ALOHA!

wow I've never heard that! cool to know.

I'm a huge deadhead, saw over a hundred shows and play in a GD tribute act these days. I even read this blog recently documenting Jerry's known musical influences: http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2013/08/garcias-record-collection.html

no mention of the Beach Boys, unsurprisingly.
we've been working on some of the Blues for Allah material recently. hard to hear the Smiley influence although it is the Dead's weirdest album, which is saying something.

I'm not familiar with the book... looks fairly recent. do you recommend it?

134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Short New Interview w/ Mike on ABC News Website on: January 18, 2017, 02:18:26 PM
Mike is just attempting to make himself look like the one who is "willing to collaborate" and extend an olive branch, while having no intention of ever pursuing it. he knows his scenario of working "alone in a room" with Brian will never happen, which is why he's happy to keep bleating on and on about it when asked. Brian has no interest in working that way with Mike, hasn't for decades, if he ever did at all. been there, done that.

Brian still creates new music the way he chooses and with whom he chooses. Mike still creates nothing but a nightly setlist performing almost entirely Brian Wilson songs, and the same shameful talking points interview after interview. it's too bad that outlets like ABC give him any publicity at all
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike is kind of playing the inauguration.... on: January 17, 2017, 09:00:09 PM
this ball does take place in DC and will most definitely be a pro-Trump affair, unfortunately.

why on earth the Beach Boys would headline a ball celebrating "all things Texas" makes little sense but wtf ever
we all knew Mike couldn't stay away from this

still, how utterly disappointing.

I know I'm going to be bashed for this but here goes.

I've enjoyed this board for a number of years. Been a fan of the group since The Beach Boys In Concert changed my life. Saw the group first at Boston Garden in 1975 and have seen them dozens of times until the Mike / Bruce band at Hampton Beach a few years ago. Since this board seems so much of a Mike vs. Brian thing I'll just say I don't take sides and simply say it's disappointing that they can't all ride out into the sunset on the same wave, but that's OK. You can't expect people who have known each other personally and professionally for more than 50 years to exist in some kind of time warp where everyone and everything stays the same. People change. Times change. As fans, all I can say is that we are blessed to love a band that has created so much joy and different music styles that you can go through phases where one kind of music touches you more than the others. Me? My favorite Beach Boys period runs from Pet Sounds through Holland. That being said...

It is disheartening to see this board go political and engage itself in the petty politics of whether or not the Beach Boys Band (I refuse to call them The Beach Boys) should or should not play at Donald Trump's inauguration. I get it that it seems the majority of folks here didn't vote for Trump. But back in my day, if someone had the honor of being invited to play an inauguration ball you did it out of respect for the office. Anyone can look at the election results and see that the country is divided. In my mind, any time the Beach Boys Band has the opportunity to share the joy of the Beach Boys music with a large audience can only be a good thing, and a way to - even in some small way - help heal the country. Brian's and Dennis' music was all about laying it out there. It's funny that a group so viscerally divided like the Beach Boys were could still be capable of generating songs of love and joy. What's wrong with sharing those same vibes with the American people?

I get it that a bunch of people on this board hate Donald Trump and the idea of his being president. Had Barack Obama asked the band to play at his inauguration I doubt you'd see the same kind of push back on this board that you're now seeing. In my view, it does this board a great disservice. It's not my place to say what people should or shouldn't post here, but if this board is going to become another vehicle for Trump-bashing you can count me out. And that's because my view it should exist for the music and for what the Beach Boys, collectively and individually, were as a force in American pop culture. If you want to destroy this board by turning it into a political forum, go for it, but I and those who think like me, won't be a part of it.

the reason you wouldn't see the push back from fans if the band played Obama or anyone else besides Trump's inauguration is because Trump is a RACIST. he has nominated and appointed racists and white supremacists to his cabinet. he has made disgusting and insulting remarks about people based solely on their race and gender. he mocked a man with a disability for f*ck sake. it's not a political left/right issue with Trump, it's about human decency and not aligning oneself (or America's Band) with hateful and racist ideals

cool. as Add Some pointed out, it should read THEIR name not THERE name.

your heart is in the right place and I'm happy to sign, BUT...

you might want to check things like grammar and capitalization in order to be taken a bit more seriously. if we're gonna do this, let's do it right!

i'd love a proper studio recording of Brian and the band's arrangement of She's Leaving Home.

i'd also love to hear him include things that influenced him back in the 50s (besides Chuck Berry) like Four Freshmen, Rosemary Clooney, Hi-Lo's, etc.
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Girls on the Beach on: October 04, 2016, 08:45:32 PM
Girls on the Beach is like Surfer Girl on steroids. the harmonies, chord progression, and arrangement are much more sophisticated. when compared to SG, GOTB is really a great indicator of just how much Brian advanced in a short period of time. Denny's vocal on the bridge is the icing on the cake. what a cut.

obviously Al just needs to write a book of his own once the dust settles from Mike & Brian's

actually you can't mess with Mike either, judging from his reaction to being told he has a chip on his shoulder. he stomped away like a child and threw a tantrum threatening to walk out on the reunion before it really even started. it's amazing that he expects sympathy from this story. does he really not see what a huge brat he paints himself to be?

Mike Love's accounting is inaccurate.

Seems to be a trend amongst associates of Mike who talk sh*t about Melinda.

One less...I banned Chewbacca. Sorry it took so long, had to wait til I had a break

sorry i can't help it but...

man you guys are a patient lot. I stopped addressing fdp directly a long time ago for obvious reasons.

I guess in her roundabout way she is confirming that indeed Mike has offered two very different accounts of Melinda using the f-word, to whom she was addressing, and about whom she was describing.

so yes, Mike took an isolated incident from early in the C50 tour in which Melinda was standing up for her husband, spun it around and completely changed the specifics in an attempt to explain why the reunion fell apart. once again, he is deflecting the blame onto someone else and inventing yet another false reason as to why the reunion didn't continue.

and it only took 7 pages to get to the bottom of this!  Wink

I can't deny, this does sum it up quite well. Well put!

Mike is the one misquoting his own book and flat-out stating that Melinda called herself his f*cking partner, which according to his book never f*cking happened.
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike opens up about Melinda. on: September 16, 2016, 10:41:46 AM

As for Mike's conflicting stories, could it also be possible that he misspoke? He's 75 years old. Could he have mixed up what she said? My 80-year-old father will sometimes do that and then only realize what he said when he's corrected. He's perfectly healthy, but you do get moments of confusion when you get older.

this is more than just mixing up his words.
the account Mike gives in the interview paints a completely different picture of what actually occurred (according to his book) and he specifically states that she told HIM she was MIKE'S partner... rather than telling Jackie that she was Brian's partner.
