a quirky classic if ever there was one.
it's a bit like the Today album, with upbeat tunes on side A and ballads on side B.

there's definitely a contingent of BW/BB fans who are put off or embarrassed by Brian's "quirkier" stuff, like I'd Love Just Once to See You, When a Man Needs a Woman, even Little Pad... while others of us find it to be Brian at his most childlike and charming, not to mention hilarious. I definitely fall in the latter group and Love You is most certainly the best example of that aspect of Brian... and the reason why so many of us either love Love You with a passion or dislike it with a vengeance. it's just so f*cking BRIAN.

102  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone Readers' Poll: The 10 Best Beach Boys Deep Cuts on: July 30, 2016, 04:27:20 PM
as usual RollingStone comes up with a list that doesn't quite foot the bill, but at least they're giving some love and webspace to some of the Beach Boys' lesser known classics. and that's pretty cool if you ask me

The Descendents did Wendy and the Queers have covered several tunes

Good Time cracks me up

a catchy tune, but one I don't particularly care for.

Mike Love's contribution to the composition is rather small, just the "Aruba, Jamaica..." bit I believe, which was added to an otherwise finished song by John Phillips. but that doesn't stop Mike from basically claiming the song as his own and putting it on a pedestal with Good Vibrations and other Beach Boy classics that were actually written by Beach Boys.

to each their own. in my opinion, it's kind of an anti-Beach Boys song since Brian had no participation in its creation and it wouldn't have been nearly as successful without being attached to a Tom Cruise blockbuster. I don't think it holds up to repeated listens either, unlike the band's best work.
106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's the most obscure BB song that could get prominent soundtrack placement? on: June 16, 2016, 03:23:33 PM

Out of left field perhaps, but I can imagine a new Wes Anderson film being scored entirely with the Friends album.
(Note that he has already used Heroes and Villains in The Fantastic Mr Fox, to great effect.)

Old Man River was used in the same film, which is pretty damn obscure.
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did Bruce and Jack disagree over? on: June 07, 2016, 01:27:17 PM
didn't Reilley claim that Bruce disagreed with and talked sh*t about the Wilsons?

not surprising, since he continues doing it to this day.
Where has he continued doing it to this day, he seems very complimentary of all three Wilson brothers in interviews and shows I've been to.

Bruce is a loose cannon. perhaps a bipolar or split personality with a lifelong sense of entitlement. some fans and interviewers have pleasant interactions with him, while others report some of the rudest most awkward encounters of their lives. one fan describes a possibly inebriated Bruce in a hotel after a show, declaring the Beach Boys were a better band without Carl. and he's most certainly made disparaging remarks about Brian in recent years. here's just one example:

What's the hotel story? Also I'm not sure that that article shows Bruce disparaging Brian but rather just not thinking too clearly about his wording, he has been a big supporter of Brian in interviews before...

sorry, there's no positive way to spin this comment about Brian's 21st century output:

Quote
I think as an exercise in keeping him occupied, it's interesting. Here's a guy that should have become John Williams, if you think about it. He should have many Academy Awards for scores he could have written. A lot of things could have happened, but they didn't. And then they dust him off and roll him back out.

it's the most backhanded f***ed up thing to say about a man you supposedly admire. screw you BJ, you sicken me.

this article is not really even worth consideration, full of falsehoods and seemingly no research. more of an opinion piece really, and an awful one at that. but this line may be the most misguided thing I've ever read:

Quote
Foskett has been with the Beach Boys for 34 years, longer than Carl or Dennis Wilson were in the band

i mean, wow.
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BW included in RollingStone's Summer Tour Preview on: June 01, 2016, 08:06:50 AM
Brian is quoted in a blurb about the PetSounds tour in the latest RS. I found the last line intriguing...

Quote
Now, he's even thinking about his next tour: "I'd love to do Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) in its entirety. Those are some great songs!"

I'll take Wild Honey and Friends while yer at it, Mr. Wilson.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: May 28, 2016, 11:48:11 PM

not THAT nice. yikes:

Unfortunately, the rest of the first set didn't quite hit those heights, the band still sounded great, but the songs were Wilson's lesser efforts, like In My Room, Surfer Girl and Don't Worry Baby. All decent in their own right, if only hinting at what Wilson was really capable of, but just not strong enough to be played one after the other for the guts of an hour.

113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 23, 2016, 11:46:09 AM
one of the things I want most to hear is the extended alternate mix of This Whole World. maybe Sunflower will get an expanded release in 2020?
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 21, 2016, 11:44:47 AM
did anyone really think we'd ever get the '75 version of In The Back Of My Mind? or a SMiLE boxset? or the gems on MIC? and yet

it's simple really... if there's unreleased material and the public expresses interest in it, why not put it out?
Brian and his camp seem to have figured this out awhile ago. Brian is well aware of all the recordings he's still sitting on and it's gradually been released over the past several years. no reason to believe they won't make more of it available in the coming months and years.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 20, 2016, 10:31:35 PM
I realize the whole Bedroom Tapes moniker is just an umbrella term for all manner of unreleased material. it's a buzzword that indeed created some buzz... and what better time to release such a collection than later this year, to coincide with Brian's book?

Brian is basically saying a release like this will likely happen, but I love how some people still think he has no idea what he's talking about  Roll Eyes
116  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / great new BW interview (Bedroom Tapes mentioned) on: May 19, 2016, 12:38:17 PM
“Yeah, I might do that later this year,” he says when asked if the tapes might ever be released.

Brian also says he plans to keep touring. good stuff

117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A petition for Mike to include THAT'S NOT ME on: May 14, 2016, 12:49:15 PM
That's Not Me is one of my all-time favorite songs by anyone. I hate that it's been so overlooked by the touring group. Mike should definitely play it. and then retire for good.

but... that's not M.E.

I'd be glad to design a photoshop for the cause if you think it will help, Autotune.  Wink
118  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 05, 2016, 11:09:22 PM
sounds like Greece-ee-ah-see to me too. makes sense after the line about gay Paris-see. there's really no mistaking the "ee" sound of Greece even if you don't hear the Gr... it's not an "oo" sound.

also there's no background vocals during that section on In Concert and it still sounds like Greece. because it is.

I watched the film & Gary in it. I just wondered who of the Wrecking Crew he played.

Al Deloray

Pretty sure its Delory

ugh. the list goes on and on folks

Tears is schlock, but it's not embarassing

when your favorite band records schlock and includes it on an otherwise solid album, it's embarrassing.
121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love book out in September on: March 29, 2016, 01:49:17 PM
not a great cover, agreed.

Mike looks pretty sleazy, but that's how he rolls. he should really stop with the praying hands in every damn shot.
interesting too that Mike seems somehow separate in the group shot and the furthest away with the Wilson brothers together in the foreground. as they should be. when you think about it, Brian even provided the book's title.

how about an alternate cover contest? here's my submission. Mike seemed to like it before:

Help Me Rhonda sessions

Australia '78

Hey Little Tomboy

plenty of Dennis footage

almost any Mike Love vocal after the 6os, some before

almost any live performance footage of Mike, ever

basically just about anytime Mike has ever opened his mouth or appeared on camera. honestly... is there anyone more cringe-inducing than Mike?? he's right up there with Ted Cruz, Bill Cosby, etc.
