You're mistaken there - Nothing is 'recorded in mono'. That would mean one microphone capturing an entire session.
But I guess a lot of the reference mixes and edits and things Brian made in 66/67 that they are going on are in mono. They're mono mixes, not recordings.
I think I've just been told!

So, apart from a few songs on the vinyl discs, no stereo mix of 'Smile' then?
I would have thought a mono mix and an alternative stereo mix would have been preferable? You can't claim historical accuracy as a reason for mono-only, as if that really mattered there'd be no Smile release at all... And besides, Brian would almost certainly have mixed in stereo if he had hearing in both ears.
Unless I'm mistaken all of the tracks were recorded in mono, so the only true stereo you'll get ,listening to the promo's is Duophonic or fake stereo. AGD will probably know more.

In september the four cd Jimi Hendrix Winterland box set is going to be released, Paul Mccartney is issuing deluxe versions of his albums, Pink Floyd has some box set that are going to be released(or have they already?), The Doors are finally releasing a proper Hollywood Bowl 1968 dvd, and now this. This is an awsome time to be a music fan. U2, The Smiths, and Neutral Milk Hotel all have boxsets coming too. I think we're experiencing the last hurrah of physical media. The Smiths? AGD's a huge fan apparently.

Carl's voice on Cabinessence sounds sublime. It sounds like his voice has been double tracked one in the left ,the other in the right channel and the clarity is fantastic. If the quality of these tid bits is anything to go by this will be one hell of a box set! Bring on November 1st

Too bad Greg Larson or the Coach wasn't around for this.
Coach & Greg are not forgotten. Even in absentia, they're part of the story. Speaking of those gone but not forgotten,Phil was watching this thread earlier today and was conspicuous with his silence. Last I heard, he was banned. They must of un-banned him because I and others here saw his name at the top watching the thread earlier.

Also, fires breaking out on November 1st would be...kind of awesome? But that would totally freak Brian out. But it should still happen.
Okay, here's the freaky thing. Hand to [whichever deity you worship, if any], I am telling you the truth. If I'm lying, then I promise I will go to a Mike'n'Bruce show and kiss Mike's bald head for good luck: The day....THE DAY...in March that it leaked out that this Smile box was happening, about half the houses on the block where I used to live burned down. Honest to God. A couple of days before we have our first actual evidence of the set existing (that is, a picture, a partial track list, and Amazon pre-order), there was an earthquake on the east coast. And now that it's out, there's a hurricane about to hit the east coast. That just about covers all four elements, no? Fire=Fire Earthquake=Earth Hurricane = Air & Water Yep that sure covers the four elements, but like a previous poster said ,just don't tell Brian ok!

What does this mean?
- Stereo mixes and session highlights (not available on CDs)
It means that the second lp has stereo mixes of some tracks and excerpts of studio sessions NOT included on the five CDs in the box! will these be on the second CD of the 2 CD release? Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new turntable.

I really regret not ordering it 2 hours ago. If i understand this correctly, if i buy now at $146 and the price is lowered as of the day of the release, i will pay that lowered price? I should pre-order asap before this thing goes up even higher in cost.
I'm pretty sure if you order it now it will stay at that price regardless of any future change in price.

I looked on Amazon and could not find anything about pre-ordering the SMiLE Box Set---Where do you pre order???I've waited 40 some years for this BUT I don't think,as great as it is,SMiLE will probably not break any sales records, today's kids just don't care for BW's music that much, and they cannot understand how,in 1967,SMiLE was lightyears ahead of it's time, and most of them could care less about Sgt. Pepper and SMiLE.For those of us who were teenagers in those days, it is apparent we grew up in a golden age of music.I hope the SMiLE set sells out, becomes the rage, but it won't because we are a minority in the music listening world ,though we are devoted to BW's and VDP's 1967 musical experiment, the kids are not and the kids are who the record companies prey on for the major bucks. So give thanks to Capitol Records,Brian,Carl,Dennis,Mikeand Al for releasing SMiLE.SMiLE is relevent today, and will be relevent 100 years from now, which is why we can't wait for the box set to be finally available.
