where do you see October 28th lol

WWDWD has it as his signature and another person on here mentioned October 28 release date in Australia.
Highly unlikely It would be released here before the US.

The casual fan will pick up the two disc set.  The hardcore fan will shell out for the box.  s and pieces in high sound quality that we can cobble together with bootlegs and whatever else to make our own version of the album.  The bottom line is the people who are putting these sets together know what they're doing period.

Besides casual/curious fans and hard core beach boys fans like us... there is also a whole world of general music nerds that will NEED to own the smile box. I have "music nerd" friends (all in their early 20s) that aren't massive Beach Boys fans BUT will be picking up the box set.

Smile coming out in Australia October 28?
Where did u here that , and do you have a link?

Are you saying Brian purposefully mixed in mono despite, in his heart of hearts, not intending to do so?

BW intended, for some point in time, to release SMiLE in 1967 using the available technology. Just as he had released the 10+ prior Beach Boys albums. I bet had he got it finished, he would absolutely have had to splice tape and that's what he would have intended to do. What's the alternative? It's the way they made music. he had absolutely no idea what digital technology was. No-one did!

It's a little like saying 'well, Fender make better basses today then they did in 1967, so I think we should re-record the bass tracks so they have the best bass sound imaginable, as that's what Brian was looking for - he was merely making do with crap bass on his records, but he really wanted the best!'

As for TSS coming in mono, I think it's more of a technical decision - We know it's impossible to create 'real' stereo masters of a few Smile tracks (Good Vibrations, Wonderful, YAMS, portions of H&V off the top of my head) so if your mission is to create as 'complete' a record as you can, you have to use the mono sources. And rather than flipping back and forth between mono/stereo, they just decided to stick with one.

Not trying to hang, it just seems a curious point of view....

Or, what Dr. BB said in one sentence  LOL

To really pour the gas on... Brian Wilson is not really known as being the master of clean mixes.  You can hear everything from farts to the wrong notes to tape cuts to bass lines that compress because somebody started singing, to even missing beats and sh*t on Beach Boys records.

I think Brian FULLY INTENDED to release Smile with bad tape cuts all over it, that's how he did all the other songs!  Not complaining.  Just saying he wasn't a stickler for that stuff, don't understand how any of his fans could be.

Mike Love might might just disagree with you on the wrong notes point.
He didn't call Brian dog ears for nothing!

I couldn't give a flying fart about the surfboard or a button.
All I'm interested in is the music.

I do believe VDP had more talent in is moustache than the man in the hat had/has in his whole body.
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 30, 2011, 04:51:10 AM
BTW -

has there been any word about why VDP is not to be seen (as a commentator) in the box paraphernalia? I could think up several valid reasons myself why not. The man perhaps thought: now, I have a career of my own, do quite a bit of shows, just started a new label and do releases on that... and I did my fair share with BWPS already, and did not back down from interviews elsewhere, in which SMiLE was mentioned. I am fully entitled to return to my own work, instead of going through it all again.

Another: I have nothing to add of much news value any more. Everything's been said, I think.

Another: this is the shelved version of the project after all, and I wasn't treated that well at the time.

All fair, IMHO.

Interesting points, and again I'm sure the only person who could give the answer is Van Dyke himself if he were asked and felt like opening up. I cannot imagine the amount of baggage attached to this for someone like Van Dyke Parks, maybe it's best to leave it up to him if he wants to open up about it. More than anyone else other than Brian himself, when Smile first became a reality on stage Van Dyke had a look of pure joy and relief as it all was happening, like a weight had just been lifted off of his shoulders and the music he knew was special for 40+ years was finally out there. It was a triumph on many levels, all hype aside.

It would be hard to measure that in terms of emotion, and how much more someone has left to offer up for what is basically the same music. Maybe it's a legal-contractual thing, maybe he just didn't want to do it (again)...only he can answer that.

Maybe recent statements attributed to Van Dyke about Mike Love "eating crow" have had an impact? If I was Mike, I'd be pissed off by that. But hopefully these guys are bigger than that.

Maybe his comments are on one of the pages NOT shown in the vid?

Truth will out.

Any UK viewers managed to access the video that's playing on amazon.com?  I managed to glimpse it the once before the system ID-ed me as a UK resident and whisked it off my screen.

I know there was a YouTube link but that's been either taken down or made inaccessible to UK folks (and I assume other Europeans).

'Xpected something on amazon.co.uk after the Bank Holiday but nothing so far.

Beginning to think Phil was right and a boycott is the only way forward. I've decided not to read any of his posts here and elsewhere until there's a glimpse of some SMiLE action here in the UK.

I'm in Australia and the video was blocked here as well.

So how many people are going to take a voluntary absence from the board between 11/1 and whenever they get the set--which for many people will be a day or several days later?

How many will want to listen if it's leaked before 11/1?  How about the Amazon sound clips?

A lot of tough decisions to make.

I am going to refrain from using Smiley Smile dot net from Nov 1 till my box arrives at my door. Grin

Capitol forgot to inform us about an important feature of the new Smile sets:

John Stamos has provided additional vocals to complete a number of songs, in some places he overdubbed himself even. And: numerous tracks have been speeded up and been adorned with that nice modern 'dance' rhythm. To get totally, like, in sync with the vibe of todays kids, man. It's the BPMs that count in these days. Close harmony is on the way out anyway.

Excellent.
Any answer to that quote requires a suicide smiley.

AGD, if you're there, or someone else in the know -

what about the limitedness of the set? Any info? Frankly, I would find it quite awful if a couple of thousands would get lucky (the most well-heeled at that, I think, who already ordered every configuration), and many, many other people would be left behind.

Nothing on Amazon suggests that it's a limited edition, however with the price increases since last week you would think it was a limited edition box set.

I really hate to say it, but I think a few people are letting their excitement get the best of them. I think the big surprise will be the 1967 version of Surf's Up. Maybe one or two other songs. The way I see it, we'll be lucky if three tracks are totally 100% new. Remember, adamghost said a few months back that we'd probably be getting a few goodies, but a lot of stuff we've already heard. Albeit, in sound quality miles above any bootleg ever released.
Surf's Up 1967 is huge.

I don't think we should we get our hopes up too much for this - it's hearsay so far as there's been nothing official, just a remembered description and an AGD endorsement that it was time it was released.

Is that you Phil? Hello Hello

This is all so exciting!  Smiley

A couple of tracks i'm thinking about:

4. Heroes And Villains: Barnyard (Master Take) [Heroes And Villains Session: 10/20/66]

I've thought for some time that the "Barnyard" lyrics were for the track that closes the "Cantina" version of H&V and NOT the track thats re-recorded on BWPS which features animal sounds. I'm looking forward to finding out!

9. Heroes And Villains: Mission Pak [Heroes And Villains Session: 1/3/67]

Could this be the vocal track we now know as "Soul Made Beautiful"?

On the Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2 CD, when they are rehearsing this, at about the 4:00 mark, Brian says (I think) "Come on you guys, pull through! Happy Happy Happy Mish Pak singing sound!

It's late, and my mind is racing....I LOVE SMILE! (and all you guys too!)

Royce

I think he just came! Roll Eyes

Just joking.

Not sure if this has been posted. The price went up to $170 on amazon.

Would still be a steal.

I have to admit I'd buy the box if it were $470 even If it meant scrimping and saving for a couple of months. It's just a once In a lifetime must have box set.
Having said that I was more than happy(and lucky) to score it for the $110 Happy Dance.

The way this thread is going we'll make 500 pages by November!

Two...Jasper's came from an acetate.

The big picture now becomes even bigger:

A lot of folks have said they wanted a "clean" version of Barnyard after being stuck with a noisy and washy acetate version for years. Same thing with the Our Prayer session, and other odds and ends.

Child is from acetate, Teeter-Totter is from acetate...those are the two.

Pick out the tracks like Barnyard on that tracklist which we've only known as noisy acetates, and I'm even more excited to hear clean versions of some amazing songs which have been buried under layers of noise for years. They must have come from the tape sources for this box set. Yeah, man! Smiley It keeps getting better.

Hearing CIFOTM in crystal clear sound is going to be heaven...

Indeed!

It's not yet on German amazon........ is it just on US amazon at this point? Must... order...

That track list is pretty cool. But I won't believe all this before I open the amazon package. And then it's probably going to be something else I ordered.

Oh by the way: if I order the box set - will I miss anything that is exclusively on the vinyl set or the CDs?

Just order it on US Amazon, I'm in Australia and the estimated delivery date here is,
Nov. 3, 2011 - Nov. 8, 2011

You're mistaken there - Nothing is 'recorded in mono'. That would mean one microphone capturing an entire session.

But I guess a lot of the reference mixes and edits and things Brian made in 66/67 that they are going on are in mono. They're mono mixes, not recordings.
The point I was making is that the box tracks won't be in true stereo. Cool Guy Cool Guy Cool Guy Cool Guy
