Are you drunk?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Look on: February 03, 2012, 12:46:48 AM
The one, one wonderful vocals are on TSS as part of the Smile Vocals montage.
Not really. If I'm hearing JMZ's fly-ins correctly, they appear to be Mike's(?) "one, one, one..." backing vocals found in the first verse (Bruce's(?) have been digitally removed) played against Brian's "one, one, wonderful" line from the main vocal (with everything time-stretched and pitch-shifted to match, of course.) It's difficult to re-create for an audio-manipulation novice such as myself, mainly due to the vocal extractions involved. The backing vocals are found in the montage, of course, but I can't separate Mike's "one"s from Bruce's. And, obviously, I can't extract Brian's lead from "Wonderful". Errg... Why is everyone so stingy when it comes to sharing their vocal-extractions? We're not all experts! I can't even find a vocal extraction of the mono vocals from "Good Vibrations", which I thought would be easy! "Roll your own" they say... pshhh!  Angry

What we really need is for someone to isolate the vocals from the piano CIFOTM which JMZ used in his Look mix.
I have mixed feelings about those fly-ins. While I like the way that they're used in the JMZ mix, I can't help but feel like the song just becomes "Child Is Father Of The Man, Part 1" with them included. I guess that's essentially what "Look" is in a lot of ways, but.... I don't know. I'm on the fence.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Look on: February 01, 2012, 01:34:49 AM
Has anyone managed to isolate the vocals from the JMZ mix of Look? Out of all of the fly-ins I've ever heard for this song, JMZ's have worked the best, at least for the beginning ("one, one, wonderful".) He also flew them in very well, quality wise, IMO.

So has anyone isolated those suckers? I'm just not educated enough in the field of audio manipulation to pull off something like that.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things DYLW on: February 01, 2012, 12:44:11 AM
the moment i heard this, i thought, if you follow the timing he sings "once upon the sandwich isles..." you can sing that melody with the rest of the words right through to upon hawaii all in the first line. Drawing out "upon hawaii" and singing it the exact same way they do in BWPS. maybe thats something he remembered in 2004? just start singing the moment the music starts and it works perfectly, isn't rushed and totally in keeping with his descending vocals as per heroes and villains, so it's not even a stretch of an idea that it may have gone like this. of course, who knows?

i think the fact he calls out to van to check and then sings is significant. it's like he's looking for agreement, so strengthens the case to me that he's singing a genuine melody, rather than made up on the spot!?!
That does sound cool, but that would leave us two lines short, as you can easily fit both lines from 2004 into this new melody in the time it takes to sing one line the 2004 way. Correct?
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things H&V on: January 25, 2012, 11:30:25 PM
To me, the stereo single version released on Hawthorne, CA sounds like it's of better quality than the stereo version on TSS. Is there a reason for that? Are they both sourced from the same recordings? (I feel like that's a stupid question, but Wikipedia has me confused.)

I don't really dig the original "Matchpoint"
Umm...doesn't that contradict the title of this thead? :D
Okay, I don't dig the original "Matchpoint" as much as this one.  Grin

Oddly enough the speeding up of Brian's vocals made him sound more like his younger self.
Which is partly why I enjoy this one so much. The quicker tempo works for me as well. It's just a different take on the song and I happen to really enjoy it. For me, it's also a case of having first heard and fallen in love with this version of the song on the Avalanches mix-tape. Having never heard the original, it never occurred to me that it had been altered in any way (aside from the obvious Chemical Brothers mash-up.)

It's nice to see so much love for the song here on the boards. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, this *is* a Beach Boys fan board, after all. From what I've seen elsewhere on the internet, and even on some other Beach Boys fan pages, I was under the impression that this song was reviled among most fans. I'm glad to find that isn't the case.

is this maybe coming out on The Avalanches next album? if it ever will come. These people really know how to take/waste their time, 2 albums in 12 years including the debut... ^^
One album, actually, so just the debut. A couple of their freely available mix-tapes were passed off as "new albums" by some crafty bootleggers once upon a time, but the only official release has been Since I Left You. Unless you're referring to their b-side collection that was released in Japan, but I wouldn't count that as an album. The second album is rumored to be on it's way, possibly this year, but nothing is official. Yes, they are taking their time, but I think Since I Left You took something like 8 to 10 years to complete?

I doubt this is going to be included on the next album, but I would love to hear some Beach Boys on the new one. The Avalanches seem to have a soft spot for the Beach Boys, specifically the post-SMiLE era songs; along with "Matchpoint", I've heard them use "Darlin'" and "The Trader" in some of their other mixes.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / This is why I love "Matchpoint Of Our Love" on: January 24, 2012, 02:09:35 AM
Matchpoint Of Our Love (The Beach Boys) / Star Guitar (The Chemical Brothers) put together by The Avalanches

This little mash-up right here was where I first heard "Matchpoint Of Our Love." This was back before I realized that there was Beach Boys music worth listening to post-Pet Sounds (I know better now). It was on a mix-tape by The Avalanches a while back and I fell in love with it; the tempo change and pitch shifting work really well for the song, IMO. I don't really dig the original "Matchpoint", but this version is a JAM, man!

Nice work! Great sync of Surf's Up. The main reason I'm not happy with TSS stereo mix of Surf's Up is the sync (along with Carl's vocal), which is a shame because it sounds so good otherwise.

I noticed that you were working on a vocals only Surf's Up at one point. Are you finished with that and do you plan on offering it in the future?
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: the magnificent stereo Surf's Up: vinyl only? Why??? on: November 06, 2011, 01:44:24 AM
I agree, but how much could they really have of SMiLE in full stereo? The general public would delete the tracks after they realized the majority were incomplete or when the songs switched from stereo to mono in sections where stereo isn't possible. It'd be a mess.

Honestly, who would know? I really don't think that the general public would care or even notice that a couple sections/songs here and there aren't in stereo. We, the fans, would notice, but IMO it's not the end of the world going from a stereo track to a mono track.

Take Purple Chick's reconstruction, for example. While the vast majority of the album is in stereo, or "stereo", there are quite a few sections in mono, or close to it. And you know what? To this guy right here, it sounds great (come at me, haters). In particular, Barnyard sounds pretty cool in mono amidst all of the stereo; it almost acts as a nice little audio effect.

I sent the Purple Chick mix to a friend of mine (pre TSS, of course) who definitely qualifies as the "general public", and he LOVED it. Did he notice that some of it was in mono? Not in the slightest. I even used the version of "In Blue Hawaii" with the mono sections that PC included as a bonus track in lieu of the full stereo one because it sounds so much better.

Also, didn't The Beatles include a couple of songs in mono on the stereo Past Masters disc? Some of the early stuff that doesn't exist in stereo at all? That was released in 2009 and I'm pretty sure no one dropped dead upon hearing it.

My long-winded point is that, had disc one of TSS been released in as much stereo as possible with mono here and there, we would be fine. That said, I'm very grateful for what we've been given.

Anyway, back to Surf's Up. It roolz.  Grin
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stereo Smile Sessions Album on: October 23, 2011, 12:39:18 PM
When I got the Beatles Mono box I finally got mono.
Same here. I used to be on the "mono sucks" bandwagon until I finally listened to The Beatles in Mono. The mono mixes just pack so much more of a punch, at least in The Beatles case. Also, I can't stand the old practice of keeping the vocals all on one side of a stereo mix, which is how a lot of The Beatles stereo tracks are.

That said, if a good stereo mix exists, then I'm more likely to choose that over mono.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your first SMiLE experience.. on: October 22, 2011, 12:32:59 PM
Purple Chick for me, too. After hearing Smiley Smile, I never thought I would actually enjoy the song "Vega-Tables", but I was proven oh-so-wrong once I heard the SMiLE version. Now I can't get me enough o' them vega-tables.  Cheesy
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Bandana Splits on: October 19, 2011, 05:43:55 PM
Just discovered these talented chicks. One of their songs was featured during the end credits of the latest episode of Bored To Death. They're a lot like the Ronettes, the Caravelles and the Andrews Sisters.

Here's a link to their Facebook page where you listen to four of their songs: https://www.facebook.com/thebandanasplits
14  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / "When We First Met" (Hellogoodbye) Acapella Cover on: September 08, 2011, 02:57:19 PM
Hey all, while this isn't a Beach Boys related cover, I thought I'd share it with everyone anyway. It's originally by a great band called Hellogoodbye. The song is called "When We First Met" and I gave it my multitrack acapella treatment.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdovBYnlZOQ

You Beach Boys fans can appreciate the harmonies, especially at the end there. As you can see, I had some fun with the video.  Razz

If you enjoy it, you should check out the original song and the album from whence it came called "Would It Kill You" by Hellogoodbye. Great stuff.

Very cool! It's nice to see someone interpret a lesser-covered Beach Boys tune. Good job, I enjoyed it!

Holy cow, this is really good! Very impressed. You and your brothers have a nice vocal blend. I think I'm going to have to download this one.

Looks like the link for the Catbirds song is down, unfortunately, so I couldn't listen to it. I did, however, enjoy Subanimal Sounds. Great harmonies and I really like your lyrics. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of your stuff!
18  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Our Prayer / Gee / Heroes And Villains - Acapella cover on: May 31, 2011, 04:49:34 AM
Wow, thank you so much for the great comments everyone! It took a lot of work to do this but it was a labor of love and I'm glad you all enjoyed it.

@Catbirdman, I've considered possibly doing the rest of BWPS, though I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it at the moment. It seems like a pretty daunting task. For now, I want to focus on some other things, including an original song I've been working on. It is a possibility, though.

I have searched high and low for the Polly Tones cover of SMiLE to no avail. It's a shame because I've heard such good things and I would love to hear it.

I'm not familiar with The Who Sells Out, but it sounds like something I could get into. Once I'm familiar with the album, I'll try to check out the Petra Haden cover. It looks fantastic from that youtube clip.

"golly, I want to listen to and comment on luther's new recording,"
"Oh boy, Luther's new tune is the bee's knees!" Tongue You are a recording machine, man! I've seen you posting these songs frequently but this is the first time I've downloaded one (I prefer streaming to downloading, that's why I've waited this long). It's good stuff and all the more impressive with how quickly you seem to pump these things out. Keep it up!
21  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Our Prayer / Gee / Heroes And Villains - Acapella cover on: May 28, 2011, 05:38:31 PM
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI2EyfF3kQQ

Finally got this one done. Seeing as how the songs are already largely acapella as it is, I figured this would be simple. That. Was. Not. The. Case.
Anyway, I thought there should be something to look at so I added all of those videos. They're mostly just a representation of what I did. Still, it was fun.

Enjoy and let me know what you think! I'm eager to hear what actual Beach Boys fans have to say.

*Thanks to dmcguire for his video on YouTube showing all of the separate harmonies to "Our Prayer". Without it, I would have had to figure out the harmonies on my own, and subsequently gone insane.
22  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Polly Tones SMiLE cover removed from YouTube?? on: May 22, 2011, 03:17:43 PM
So I was cruising the board and came across this thread here, which is the Polly Tones cover of SMiLE. However, much to my dismay, when I tried clicking on the YouTube links to the music, all of the covers had been removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim filed by Brother Records??! Lame. I'm no copyright expert but since when do covers, found on YouTube no less, infringe on the copyright laws? Could someone clear that up for me, please?

It's a real shame, I would have loved to hear their cover.

This is actually pretty great! Kudos on the harmonies. Well recorded, too.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: My Beach Boys Covers on: May 21, 2011, 05:02:10 AM
I've actually been working on a cover myself of the intro to SMiLE (Our Prayer/Gee/H&V) and your video with all of the separate harmonies for "Our Prayer" was a LIFESAVER, thank you so much!! I can't imagine what I would have done without it. I probably would have just died right there at the computer, face down on the keyboard. Keep up the good work!
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / DVDs and Videos / Re: The Beach Boys - Endless Harmony on: May 19, 2011, 05:14:00 AM
Just finished watching and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Never having seen a Beach Boys doc, it was an interesting watch. My only complaint, I think, is that it didn't get a chance to focus on other members of the band as much. I would love to have seen more on Dennis as he seems like such an interesting guy. I'm now tracking down the BBC4 special, Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy to get some more insight.
