A Day In The Life Of A Tree.
I never really got into this one, primarily because I think Jack sounds terrible and I'm not really into lyrics - I've always been about the music and the melody first. Had this been performed by the band in a glorious multi-part harmony in the classic BB style, I'd love it.

Linda didn't want to be in Wings or play keyboards. Paul sort of pushed that on her. She would have LOVED it if John and Paul (along with George and Ringo) would have reconciled and she would move to the side and just be Paul's wife. John's wife as we all know wasn't having any of it. They came really close in 1975 when Wings were down in New Orleans and John was literally about to fly down to play with Paul and see how it went. Then that bitch had to step in and "talk" him out of it. Yoko's not the reason why there never will be a full Beatles reunion ever again. You can blame that on Mark David Chapman and the Catcher In The Rye Oh my God, really? Who's Mark David Chapman? Catcher In The Rye? Is that a baseball book? I was obviously talking about 1975 when John was still alive and she did prevent them for getting together (at least for that occasion of jamming together to see what would happen).

Turn to any classic rock station for an hour or two, and I guarantee you will hear some Floyd - definitely some Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here or The Wall. Those stations don't even know about cool songs like See Emily Play or Arnold Layne.
That's because the MAJORITY of fans don't prefer those Floyd songs over the non-Syd Barrett classics. A lot of Americans can't stand Syd with his British accent singing. Those singles didn't chart over here for that reason (they did have national promotion - the US just didn't care for those songs). They wanted their Brits to sound like Americans (with a few exceptions). They want Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals. I love the first Floyd album myself, just like I love Beach Boys post Smile. But I am not blind when it comes to reality. As for those classic rock radio stations - 100% clueless. I agree with you all the way Lonely Summer. Why they even have a DJ at this point is beyond me. They could be enlightening so many people by playing album cuts from all those same classic rock bands, and turning new fans onto bands they normally figured only had a hit or two and nothing else. The Beach Boys glory years will always be the Brian Wilson era up til Smile. Yes, he was involved after that, but not at his peak. They are in the Rock Hall Of Fame because of the early era, they are beloved around the world because of that era. Simple as that. Average fans do not care about most material after that. And don't give me "I know people that like I Can Hear Music." Most average fans have no clue other than the hits. If people can't understand that, I don't know what to say. As for me, I love all of it, and I wish the average fans were exposed to Sunflower or Wild Honey or Carl and The Passions and gave it a chance. But they are not exposed, and to them it's ALL 1962-1966. Do It Again is not considered a big hit over here. Sail On Sailor people like. The problem is half of them don't know it's the Beach Boys.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are you ever embarrassed to be a Beach Boys fan?

I'm not embarrassed of being a Beach Boys fan. In fact, I throw them out all the time as one of my favorite bands when talking about music. Many people are surprised that I like them so much because I've been a guitar player for 25 years and I usually listened to guitar dominated music. I have a sense of pride in being a BB fan. For one, they could only be an American band (from California). They basically existed in an era as if the British Invasion didn't exist. That to me is simply a stunning and impossible feat. Brian Wilson could have followed the trends when the Beatles appeared on CBS TV 50 years ago. But he didn't. He did it HIS way. That is an aspect of the BB that isn't always mentioned. When he was knocked out by how good the American version of Rubber Soul was (hey, let's face it, I think Capitol did ok on that one), he didn't set out to copy it - he wanted to do an album his way, but better. When I bring that fact up about how Brian basically kept the BB sound as American as he could, a lot of people step back and say, "Wow, you're right! That IS impressive!" But of course, beyond the glory years, the trippy summer of 1967, the mellower late 1967-1969 era, the Sunflower and Surf's Up era, the Blondie and Ricky era, the late 70's, and beyond - there's so much music to love. And a lot of people tend to be impressed when I play them some of the later material.
I went to see Brian Wilson and Co. at Ravinia this summer. My friend had bought Holland on vinyl after I played it for him. His wife came to the show saying she hoped they'd play material from that album, which was nice to hear. You usually expect someone to say they hope to hear Surfin USA or California Girls. At some point in the show, Al announced that they were going to play two songs from Holland. It was almost as if they heard her request. It just goes to show that when people hear more of their work, they get it. That was cool. Yes, I am happy to tell people I am a fan!

Sunflower Sessions deluxe set - stereo/matrix mixes plus outtakes and vocal/instrmental tracks
Surf's Up ditto
Holland ditto
The Complete Brian Wilson Productions 1962-1997
"Rarities" box, collecting all of odd/one-off/non-album tracks.
Last Wilson Standing 1986-201? comprehensive BW solo box, 4CDs minimum.
Raiders of the Lost Archives - unreleased tracks 1962-2012
This is the list I'd be down for. Except for the Brian Wilson stuff, I'd rather have BB material first. Also the Wild Honey album in stereo is a must. Raiders of the Lost Archives -

The version on Made in California is the same one that was on the Hawthorne CD. It's a total remix of the original single with Brian singing the first verse, Carl singing the second verse and Al sings the choruses. On the original single, it was Carl singing both verses and Al sang the choruses. As far as lyrics, I don't recall anything different for the main parts, but maybe the backing vocals are a little different.

Stephen, to me you are easily one of the greatest engineers ever and I can't wait to read your book. Your study videos are also just amazing and I hope to see many more. It also frustrates me to wonder what could be released to form a special box set (or official download) of the sessions you worked on with the band. A Capella mixes, alternate takes/mixes, and as many songs as possible that utilize the Spatializer technology. It's all fascinating. And would they even bother to involve you in such a project? Anyway, thanks again!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Post Release MIC Track Discussion

Phil - Just about all of the fan mixes of Smile are outfakes as you call them. On the official Smile there are outfakes. I don't have a problem with them. ANY song with an overdub is technically an outfake by that logic. I know you are among the people that cry foul on the Beatles Anthology outfakes. But let's not forget that plenty of the released tracks from the 60's were also the same thing. Strawberry Fields Forever has to be the biggest outfake of all time. It's two songs fused together and both are in different tempos and keys. I bet you love that song, and yet if it they dared try that today track, you'd scream bloody murder. Again, I don't have a problem with it.
If they could make a song out of what's laying around for something like Lonely Days and turn it into a 2 or 3 minute track that feels like it was completed back in 1967, then I am all for it.
I have a MIC gripe - I feel the official release mix of Good Time (on Love You) pales in comparison to the original 1970 mix. I really wished they had used the Desper one for MIC - glad it circulates in pristine quality on boots. I still hold out hope for a special expanded Sunflower release in the near future with things like Big Sur, Walkin', the alternate Add Some Music, etc.
