From what I can tell, it's being described as a "movie," vs. a series, so I assume it won't have the length to necessarily either go into too much depth and/or to cover the full entirety of their career? But I could be wrong, the info out today is minimal and I'm sure we'll know more soon enough.

I read in a different article that a soundtrack will be released as well, "featuring songs from the film" (but no mention of there being anything previously unreleased, to my knowledge)

Nice to see David, Blondie, and (at least via audio) Ricky are part of this too!

One of my favorites of the SOS box is the track/backing vocals for The Trader. Is it just me, or is Bruce on this track? Knowing he left before the Holland sessions, I wasn't expecting to hear him (or what I think might be him) on this song. Do we have a definitive list of the song(s) he was involved in for '72?  I thought I heard him one other track on the SOS box set but am drawing a blank on which it was. Good excuse to listen again  Smiley

I don't know if the LP's booklet differs from the 6 CD set's but it indeed can seem a little confusing because of the superscriptions. "Supporting musicians 1972" means the people who worked on the studio recordings. There's a separate section for the musicians on the live tracks (Carnegie Hall as well as the bonus material) and also for the studio musicians for 1973.

Yes, the booklets do vary slightly. The layout of the CD set is less confusing (to me), and I would have read it the way you suggested--that the supporting musicians were just those throughout the year on the studio recordings, whereas the LP booklet made it look to me like it was possibly referencing the live recordings.  Also, the LP booklet omits the "lead vocals by" listings for the Holland album, but they're listed in the CD booklet. I would have assumed most things like this would simply be Copy/Paste, more or less, in terms of the actual text, but apparently not!

A couple notes about the booklet:

Just received my LP set and finished reading the booklet. I really enjoyed it, aside from a few typos it's nicely done. As an editing nerd I'm always amazed at how many little errors make it into things. VERY minor complaint and thrilled to have the set!

However, has anyone else noticed missing text on page 6 (the top of page 6 in my booklet starts mid-sentence, and is not a continuation of the text from page 5)? I have no idea how much content is missing here, whether it's a couple words or if there's something more notable.

Second, at the end (the credits page), under the Carnegie Hall credits, I'm confused about how it lists the "supporting musicians 1972", then the vocalists (including Bruce Johnston), and then the "supporting musicians on live recording"--is this suggesting there were, as often is the case, musicians used for non-live (i.e. studio sweetening?) recordings for the Carnegie material, or is this just strangely worded?  It's all under the Carnegie Hall credits, so it doesn't seem to be referencing musicians who were involved at various points throughout the year, but rather suggests that all were involved in the CH shows. Anyone care to clarify?

I've really enjoyed this set. I am hoping that there will be a digital part 2 before the end of the year as I am sure that there is other stuff (namely the DW stuff from the Bandcamp "release" last year) that should come out from this era.

I was really bummed, as I imagine a lot of others were, about how quickly (and unannounced) that Bandcamp release came and went. I didn't even suspect the Beach Boys as having a Bandcamp account, nor does it look like they have anything available to view/purchase on Bandcamp now (so how did anyone even know to look there last year?)...so, what outlets are folks checking for any possible quickie releases? I'd hate to miss out again if there are known places one should be keeping an eye on. Thanks for any input!

Super excited about the new set, albeit with one question: Is there any reason why the special items that come with the Deluxe and Limited Super Deluxe LP variations (the lithographs and the Holland promo reproduction booklet) can't also come with the Super Deluxe 6-CD version? While I have a record player, it's a cheap one and vinyl is not my go-to for most music. I always buy the CD sets, and feel I certainly can't be alone? As such, I've always been fine missing out on whatever extras are exclusive to the LP sets. But this time I caved, having just ordered the Limited Super Deluxe vinyl edition simply for the lithographs and Holland book (call me a sucker), and I will no doubt get the CDs for most of my actual listening. I figured I'd ask anyone here who might be in the know about why such bonuses can't be offered for the CD versions? I know this is not unique to this set, or the Beach Boys products in general. But I don't see why a "Limited Super Deluxe" CD option couldn't be offered just as it is for the LPs. Anyone in the know about why this is so often the case, where vinyl products come with the most unique goodies?  I can't imagine the physical configuration of the CD box set would have to be altered much, if at all, to house a sleeve or something that could contain those items, given it's housed in a book anyway.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: April 30, 2022, 03:08:40 PM
I've often wondered a couple things when it comes to these compilations.
1) What does it mean when no year in indicated? Many of the songs have title only; what would one assume the source of those tracks to be? There is probably an obvious answer to this that I am missing, but would love some clarification from anyone who knows!
2) Using songs from "Pet Sounds" to illustrate my confusion over source selections, according to the Apple Music tracklisting posted here earlier, "God Only Knows" is the '96 stereo mix, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is 2013, and "Sloop John B." is unspecified. From an album like that which has been remastered more than any others in their catalogue, I find it amusing and confusing as to why so many compilations cherry pick from a variety of versions. Is there a consensus after the fact that some of the later releases are not, in fact, better (despite improved technology/new mastering/etc.)? Or are there preferences within the band for certain versions that are adhered to regardless?
3) With several releases over the years boasting newer mixes and/or remastering, wouldn't (in theory) one expect that the latest version to be the "best" one? Surely they'd be advertised as such ("using the latest technology," etc.).

Fair point--"Brian's Back" sort of slipped my mind in this case given the involvement of other BB's in the song. But thanks for the response!

Unless my searching skills are severely lacking, I was surprised to see very little come up when searching the forum for posts about Mike's unreleased 70's solo album projects, but hopefully posting onto this topic is close enough. Anyway, I've long wondered why none of his unreleased music has appeared on any of the Beach Boys box sets to date? Setting aside anyone's personal musical preferences, I'm surprised that none of it appeared on the '93 set or the MIC set--especially when considering how much of Dennis's solo material appeared (and will continue to on Feel Flows). While unarguably better material, is Dennis the only member whose unreleased solo works are likely to get consideration for release in a band/box set setting? I'd assume Mike would want his moments in the spotlight too, and certainly has had a say in the contents of these releases over the years. Does anyone know if Mike simply doesn't want that getting out in official fashion?

As an aside, I just realize my reply moments ago was posted under my real name and not the one I've previously posted in...strange! How did that happen?

I don't know about a grilled cheese, but if cheese and bread is what you're after, La Rocco's pizza is only about 4 miles away and it's pretty good!

My vote probably goes to the Jackson 5 "Christmas Album"
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: August 22, 2020, 02:26:39 PM
Lots of opinions here, and being a new member I'm not going to sift through all 63 pages at the moment. But some probably unpopular opinions that come to mind right away for me:
*Not only is SMiLE (as we know it anyway) not as good as Pet Sounds, but Smiley Smile is front-to-back a significantly better album. I'll concede that several of SMiLE's best songs and moments top Smiley Smile's, but as a total package, I'd take Smiley Smile over SMiLE easily.
*Marcella is one of my least favorite Beach Boys songs of the 70's. I'd probably rank it as the worst on Carl & The Passions.
*As much as I love Pet Sounds--which is a LOT--sonically (mono especially), I don't get the praise it's been given for the actual recording itself. To me, it doesn't sound very good.
*I have no issues with the disco version of "Here Comes The Night" and actually kind of like it.
*I don't think it's unpopular to say that "From There to Back Again" is one of the best songs on TWGMTR, but I think it's potentially a top-10 song of the entire Beach Boys (group and solo) catalogue.
*I'm OK with auto-tune. Let me explain...For all the complaints about auto-tune on latter-day Beach Boys/solo studio and live stuff, when it comes to studio recordings, I've come to realize that if some auto-tune helps a singer/songwriter bring a tune to life by singing in their own voice, while fixing its age-related imperfections, I'm ok with it. I don't view the use of Auto-Tune on a 70-something Brian Wilson the same I would for a 20 year old pop star. In other words, if that what it takes for some of the stuff to get created and released, I'd rather hear it slightly touched up than never put out for us to hear.

New member here, first post (hello!), with a question I've had basically since the MIC set came out. With a lot of the hype for this box set being about including a few (and even about not including other) Dennis tracks, was there any consideration to giving space to any of Mike's, Carl's, or Bruce's solo stuff? I'm not sure how easily that would work with Bruce's and Carl's, since their recordings are from other record labels, but as much as I agree that Dennis's solo material is largely preferred to that of the other guys, I wonder if there was even any discussion from the guys to include some of their stuff (previously released or no) on the set as well?  Additionally, I wonder how (or if) any of that kind of tracklist negotiations may play into the Feel Flows set debacle--though I'm not aware of any of the other members having any solo stuff of note from that period to consider.
