Tatsuro is a great songwriter.
He has done quite a few covers.

Here’s another obscure cover he has done “I Do”

COMMENT:  As you know, I was the engineer responsible for the primary tracking sweetening of existing basic tracks as well as the vocal tracking and final mixing with Brian or Carl or Alan. Some songs were a hodge-podge collection of unfinished parts, just started parts, fragments, and experimental recordings before being edited to the final version. None of that is documented. Brian was in and out of the process. Many sessions worked on several songs, but were noted as and billed to one song. The union contracts do not tell the entire story. To make historical accounting worse, I carried the 8-track, 1-inch master multi-tracks with me while five of six Beach Boys toured in Europe and the Eastern United States. During this tour, we found some time to work on 20/20 in studios around Europe and Britain such as Paris, Rome, Berlin, and London and also at Capital Studios in NYC. None of this is documented with any accuracy.

From an engineer's point of view, it was a challenge since each studio's tape machines that had to be re-aligned to American or Hollywood standards. This takes time. Also, trying to pull a preview mix that sounded somewhat similar from one location to the next was also taxing, especially for the Boys trying to harmonize while each monitor of unfamiliar sound signature or tonality would throw the inner voice balance off, from one location to the next. What we had recorded in Los Angeles sounded way different in the European control rooms and from each country, one from another. In NYC. the control room at Capital had monitors behind an acoustic curtain so you could not see them. There was no visual reference. That was how they did it there, but was very strange to us. Alan pulled a mix on Bluebirds that sounded OK in NYC, but back in LA sounded awful and was redone.

Not every final mix was done in one location, but at several studios around Hollywood -- which never leads to a coherent sounding album.

All in all, I think 20/20 sounds dull, but some of that is Capital's fault, as they did the final mastering in a closet-sized control room, actually a walled-off end of a hallway. And I don't think it helped matters that The Beach Boys were leaving the label.

Thank you for your insight of the recording of 20/20 Mr Desper.

Is it "liner" notes, like an ocean liner, or a garbage can liner, or "linear" as in linear thought?

My bad, you’re right it’s liner.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2fer Linear Notes on: September 21, 2019, 08:33:05 PM
There is no doubt that a lot of it was written by David leaf or others-sometimes using info from old Brian interviews. I recall that the pet sounds book incorporated a lot of quotes from 1960s interviews I have but made it seem like they were written now. That was in the last landy years so Brian was probably not that accessible

Hmmm that’s what I always suspected with these linear notes.

Odd that they would do this. Seems like they are in the same style of Brian first “autobiography”.

Disappointing..

On the 20/20 2fer CD, Brian writes about I Can Hear Music:

“I wanted the instrumental track of I Can Hear Music to be smooth and subliminal. I used acoustic guitars. Carl wailed on the lead.”

This is one where it’s accepted Brian was absent for, as Bruce has stated in the past.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Side A

1. Good Timing (Brian Wilson/Carl Wilson)
2. The River Song (Dennis Wilson/Carl Wilson)
3. Hard Times (Blondie Chaplin/Ricky Fataar)
4. Out in The Country (Brian Wilson/Al Jardine)
5. Carry Me Home (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)

Side B

6. Shortening Bread ( arr. by Brian Wilson)
7. Rainbows (Dennis Wilson/Stephen J. Kalinich/Carl Wilson)
8. We Got Love (Blondie Chaplin/Ricky Fataar/Mike Love)
9. Sweet Mountain (Brian Wilson/David Sandler)
10. Holy Man (Dennis Wilson/Taylor Hawkins/Gregg Jakobson)

Would of made an interesting album.

Didn’t Don Goldberg write Out In The Country?
From memory Don said Brian was playing bass on a number of his songs.

Does Brian sing on this track at all?

I always imagined he was singing the three-toned "bah bah bah" and the "dada daaa da" together with Al. Does he contribute anything else?

Pretty sure his singing a backing harmony in the ending tag.
From memory Jack mentioned Brian even got his house keeper to join.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / A Day In The Life Of A Tree Oh lord lay me down on: November 23, 2018, 05:57:35 PM
The little section “oh lord lay me down my branches to the ground there’s nothing left for me” I always thought it was Al singing.
Mr Desper has said in his past study video that it’s Brian voice.

It kind of reminds me for the “Daddy Dear” situation where at times it sounds like it could be either one of them.

What do you guys think?

Brian has played drums on quite a few recordings pretty funky, till I die, most of Love You. He played guitar on Love You didn’t he? Wonder which tracks.

Played all the instruments for You’ve lost that loving feeling.

He played guitar on Where is She and Break Away if I am correct.

Wasn’t aware he played guitar on Where Is She. Was this on the linear notes?

Brian played all the instruments on "Where Is She", and sang all the vocals.

Ahh that’s c-man. This is news to me.

Personally I don’t think it would of made that much difference, the guys already knew he wrote that one.

What is the infamous tarmac incident? I don’t recall it.

Hey guys,

Just wondering any news on c-man’s sessionography?

Wow this is great!! Now we have all the 67 Hawaii recordings, some rehearsals we have never heard before. For me this is even better than the first release. The only thing is I hope there is a CD release cause $50 for digital download is pricey, tho there are a heap of tracks.

Are they all Beach Boys or just the guys with caps that have, "The Beach Boys" emblazoned across them?  Wink

COMMENT to mikeddonn:  The Beach Boys are the two looking into the camera. The support people are looking elsewhere. ~swd

Stephen - I'm certain you don't remember me, since I was a little fan/worker-bee at the Ivar offices when you were the BBs' brilliant engineer, both in the studio and on the road - and you were a truly nice guy who was great to me.  I didn't mean to show any disrespect to you in my posts.  That said, I think mikeddonn was joking, given the wink emoji...So was I, but I still think the comments are funny...sorry...Oh, and when my ex-husband was an FAA employee in DC, he was required to attend Presidential events, so...

I'm glad you continue to post.

COMMENT to Debbie KL:  Hello, hello!  Thanks for your kind words. Having worked at Ivar and with all the Beach Boy daily shenanigans, you can appreciate the photo in question.

You can make lite of anything, but stop and consider this photo.  First, as Debbie well knows, just getting eight people together is an accomplishment in itself. Then you've got to decide where the photo will be shot and find a location. Next get the people all to show up. I'm certain several different poses were considered, but this one is a "winter on the beach" type of thing -- jackets and all. I'm sure the water was cold, as it always is in California. Maybe Bruce showed up in his typical shorts and had to be supplied pants  Cheesy. Next a decision had to be made about the sunglasses. Then who looks where. I thought that having the principles looking directly at the camera while all the others look elsewhere was a brilliant move. It's subtle, even subliminal, but it works to make a distinction between who's the headliner and who supports them.

Debbie, you should post more often. I'm sure you have some stories you could share.  Best to you!!
~Steve D.

Thanks, Stephen...I used to post fairly regularly before my husband became ill, and now that he's doing better, I'm dealing with physical issues.  When I did share my personal experiences a few years ago, I tended to be resented by a number of posters and attacked by a few.  Most, or all of them are gone elsewhere and ironically, then my time became limited to post.

I also tend to fiercely defend people I have long loved and admired - many of them I still consider some of my closest friends who are also close to Brian and Melinda - so I guess that explains the intensity of some of the attacks. In BBs "politics," I was the enemy to some. Inexplicably - they love the music but attack Brian?  I don't get it.

There are a lot of hilarious stories in my memories, and some very sweet ones, as well.  Maybe I'll share a few when they come to mind again and see what happens.  I do remember that we all loved you, though.

Yes I second this! Keep posting Debbie. Always enjoy your opinions.

As far as what happened between Van Dyke and Brian. Maybe there was not one thing in particular. Van Dyke has praised and made shots at Brian for years. It could just be lots of little things that have irritated him over the years. Was it at the smile premier after party that Van Dyke and his wife weren't invited. He was pretty annoyed by that.

Brian and Van Dyke have never been that close. Like Carl once said its a hot and cold relationship.

Did Carl ever play bass live? I know there's a photo with Ricky on pedal steel or lap steel, Carl on bass, and Al and I think Blondie on guitars.

Not sure if he played bass live in early 70s but he did play bass for a few songs for the Honolulu concert album

Yeah I thought I remembered that. What would have originally been Lei'd in Hawaii right?

Yep

Did Landy actually co-write In My Car? I know Brian said that in the Endless Summer TV special (which I wish was on DVD), but supposedly (from what I've read here) Brian isn't always accurate in interviews.

I don't doubt it - but it's hard to determine which songs Landy actually had a hand in. Even though we know he bullied his way into co-writing some of Brian's songs from that era, it also seems his name may have ended up on at least a couple where it really didn't belong.

Carl certainly seemed to feel the "In My Car" lyrics were Landy. From that 1989 translated Carl interview:

LK: So why don't you include songs like "Cool, Cool Water" and "Caroline, No", for example, instead of doing cover versions like "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" and "Little GTO"?

Carl: We have done "Cool, Cool Water" from time to time, and we did "Caroline, No" last year. I would like to do that more, but I'm in a minority in the group. Of course, there are times when each one of us is more active. Sometimes it's Al, and he does more of his stuff, now it's Michael. I hope Brian gets more involved. I spent some time with him in the studio when he recorded "In My Car" and it was great. I like the music, but Brian should collaborate with his peers, not Gene (Landy) and wife. These lyrics: "I'm master of my fate when I accelerate," ... what? (Carl laughs and shakes his head). Gene couldn't hit the right note even if his life depended on it! I said to Brian, "Feel free to call me." But Landy doesn't like me because I say the truth.

LK: Do you like Brian's album?

Carl: Oh yes. It's too easy to say, "it's not Pet Sounds," but that's not the point. I especially like "Let It Shine". I have heard tapes from Brian's next LP. It's fantastic!

Is the full interview transcript available somewhere? This is great, honest stuff from Carl!

I think the full interview is in either Back to the beach or essential interviews books

Well, I noticed the guestbook to Lorren Daro’s page at Legacy.com had one entry, by a Michael Levesque of San Francisco.
https://www.amazon.com/Big-Vitamin-Dictionary-Contains-Everything/dp/0970660812
shows Levesque wrote a book which Daro published in 2002 so now I’m pretty sure Daro passed away. As to why there was no death notice my guess, based on his general attitude as manifested on this board and other places, is that he was rather bitter about the fact that he was going to be remembered primarily as the guy who gave Brian acid, so he didn’t feel like having the world learn of his death right away.

That's sad to hear. Must of been more recently. I remember a few years ago he came here answering questions. He sort of had no filter when talking about certain people which angered a lot of people and some of his stories clashed. I think some people overreacted too much, we may have learnt more from him.
