Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour)

It's great to see everyone's reviews on the recent gigs, looking forward to Saturday now!
I have emailed the promoter but no reply yet so I wondered if any of the posters who went to Bristol could help?
I have booked the meet and greet package at the Palladium but was quite surprised to see the arrival time was 3:30! I have a 6 week old baby who would need to be fed by someone else and I am not sure my baby will be happy doing that for the whole afternoon and evening! I wondered if there were any breaks in between check in, sound check, meeting that I could go and feed my baby in? Are you allowed to go off as long as you return for a certain time?
Thanks!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is THE most underrated Brian Wilson song?

Every Beach Boys song is underrated by the general public! As we all know by now, they seriously don't get enough respect and love as they deserve.
Without wanting to get everyone on my back, I'd say they should have been more influential than The Beatles and in my opinion, were much, much, much better than them. I grew up listening to The Beatles so I do like them, but compared to the complexity of the BB stuff, their music is just more 'tune' like than masterpiece!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - Long Promised Road 'LIVE' CD

I treated myself to this and put it in the car this morning. I didn't get to listen to it all but was impressed with the version of Long Promised Road (even with the obvious mistake!) and having never really fallen in love with the studio albums before, came across Hurry Love which was soon on repeat. It's much better and much more soulful than the studio version and I keep thinking it should have Beach Boys vocals to make it more of a BB song! It's in the mould of Angel Come Home I think.
So having listened to just 5 songs so far I'm glad I spent the money on it.

I'd love to get a Beach Boys song to number one again but I have to say I don't think I'd want any of Brian's current stuff. I often wonder if a song like Adele's Hello, sung by the Beach Boys would even get near the charts. I guess most of it is about your brand and your 'coolness'.
I reckon if the Beach Boys were to get near the top of the charts again we'd either need a remixed version of something or for a show/film to pick up one of the lesser known songs (Forever, Wild Honey just a couple of ideas) and for people to go 'I actually quite like that, who sang it?'
I don't think people care so much for the surfing songs nowadays, I certainly don't.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce - Pre 2012

I kind of understand all the upset around Mike pulling out of doing more shows as the whole Beach Boys but at the same time I never thought they would carry on longer than the planned shows. I was happy for it and it was great but they went out on a high and that's how they should be remembered.
How many times have the Boys made the wrong decision in their careers and ended up tarnishing their legacy? By stopping when they did perhaps it was for the best.
One thing that came into my mind just now. If Mike and Bruce HAD carried on for another year or longer, what would have happened if it had been Brian or Al who had pulled out due to health reasons/politics/musical direction? There's no guarantee that extending C50 would have resulted in a happy ending and judging by their past it almost certainly wouldn't have! Bands don't stay together if they don't like being around each other. If that's the case why force it on them and ruin what once was a good thing?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread!

I didn't think it warranted a new thread but I did a small radio 'piece' today for a station in the UK called Magic FM. The show will air on Sunday after 6pm GMT and the Beach Boys are the presenter's artist of the week. I got contacted by the production company behind the show and asked if I wanted to say a few things about why I liked them - how can you possibly explain it?! - and I got to choose a song.
I really wanted to choose Time To Get Alone but they said it had to be a hit so I chose what I think will encourage non BB fans to listen!
I think it will only be on for about 10 seconds but it might be worth a listen to see what songs they play and if there's anything else that they might add in. I'm just going to be cringing throughout though!

John, I agree, as part of the Beach Boys 'blew it, blew it consistently' mentality, I don't think this bickering will ever end! It's a great shame as we all joined here to talk about the band we love so much, not make personal attacks on band members or posters. It's easy for people to make personal attacks on people behind a computer screen, which is so wrong.

I refuse to get drawn in to the argument properly but I think it can be seen both ways. Sure, there are those on here who love Mike, defend him, dislike Brian but equally there are people who hate everything if it isn't Brian and his band. A good BB live video will get far less praise than a good Brian video. Sometimes unfairly. I've seen both bands in recent years and felt far more 'involved' in the music at the BB gig than the Brian gig. I think because it was far more interactive. Back to my point though, I see posts from both sides of the argument and they are both as loud as each other. Sometimes they make stupid posts but as members of this board they are entitled to have their favourites.
You are right, with no Brian or Al there is no 'Beach Boys' but for me as soon as Carl died the band could never really exist anymore. Yes Brian was the mastermind and the founder but it was Carl who kept the band going. That being said, BOTH bands do a very good job at keeping the fans happy and to say either one of them are sub-standard in any way is just plain rubbish and insulting I think.

Good post MaryUSA. I don't know why it's the done thing on here to criticise the band we all love. We love them enough to sign up to be members of this forum so we can speak to like minded people. Yes there are always going to be some opinions on events that happened away from the music but come on, the music is by far the most important thing here and all we are doing is tarnishing the enjoyment of that. Very few of us know the band members personally. Some who comment haven't seen either party live for years. So really, it's best to just talk about what you KNOW rather than what you think you know.
