I won't be giving the Qobuz versions of KAEOS64 a go any time soon, for two reasons: one, I currently lack the tools I would trust to be able to make a proper judgement, even on the better-quality recordings that can be found on KAEOS64, and secondly, and more prosaically — I already bought KAEOS64 in its original lossy format once, and I don't really want to shill for it again. Especially not if it turns out the files are the same lossy ones I already paid for, but this time in a sugary hi-res coating, so to speak...!

How about doing a test with one of your own files, a .wav/.aif that you know is lossless, run it through the tester to check to see what kind of data gives you, then compressing that very same file and convert it to .wav, checking it again. At least that could give you an idea if the tool works at all.

Have only listened to a few songs here and there, some of it is really great.  The alternate version of "I'm So Young" is really beautiful.  And the live in the studio versions of "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around" are awesome too.

I find the live in studio versions of "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around" rather embarrassing, mostly of course because of Mike Love's nasal singing, but also due to the sloppy playing. I really dislike the fact that they feel the need to speed up the songs too. Loving the rest of KAEOS though.

But I repeat - unless I'm missing something - even if you buy it through Amazon, it's STILL THE SAME LOSSY COMPRESSED FILES.

So all you're doing by choosing Amazon over iTunes is avoiding paying Apple, which might be satisfactory to you on some level.

Nope, iTunes has their own lackluster encoding. It will not be the same files.

Actually 256kbps AAC files = 320 kpbs mp3s.

Apple doesn't use MP3s; they're Apple's own compression scheme. Haven't gotten KAEOS yet, but at least their Beatles release last year was compressed and still sounded better than any boot I've ever heard.

You're right Dauber, but that wasn't the point. They're of course using AAC, 256kbps. My point is that any serious music fan would want some sort of lossless format.

Mp3s... Where's the vinyl or CD? Or at the very least FLACs? I'm not sure they know what demographics they are selling this to.

I'd like a feature that lets you know what posts are new within the thread since last visited.

Isn't the Friends album cover absolutely glorious??? Bruce just seems to have zero taste and/or judgement. Mind you, that Goin' Pubic album cover - masterpiece!! The way it just lazily lifts an old Sunflower-era photo and slaps it onto a plain mauve background - sheer class! Curious to know as to where this ranks in Bruce's bad album cover list... Smiley
Zero taste? A bit strong, more like "differing". But yes, Goin' Public cover is a joke. Dunno how Bruce ranks it, just that he told some fan who came with the album to sign it for him to toss/never show it again.

He signed my Goin' Public CD-cover willingly.  And I think he's right; Sloop John B does not really fit on Pet Sounds. As for the Friends cover, he couldn't be more wrong! :D

Could you please implement a feature where you can follow a topic without receiving email notifications? Something in the effect of 'Watch Thread' at Hoffman.
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brother Re-Issues: Proposed Bonus Tracks on: June 23, 2014, 03:06:11 AM
. (this is apparently the best way to 'watch thread', without receiving email updates?)
35  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Byrds on: January 19, 2014, 07:13:56 AM
I've read over at Hoffman that there may be some unrelased Byrds tracks coming to iTunes soon!  Shows by McGuinn, Clark, Hillman and Crosby in the late 70's (the Boarding House).

Any one else hear anything?

Trying to find the post on Hoffman without luck, have a link?

Yeah.. So the proxy method did not work for me (from Norway).
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Brian ever use a Mellotron? on: September 14, 2013, 03:47:22 AM
It sounds like they are using a muted harpsichord distorted through some type of tube gear on H&V.
Oh, and I know Stephen is saying that they didn't use a mellotron on Sunflower - but they certainly tried to make it sound that way with the intro to 'At My Window'.
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Sunflower actually overrated? Defend the album. on: August 26, 2013, 12:12:38 PM
I didn't see the light when it comes to 'Tears In The Morning' until I heard the instrumental w/backing vocals version.

Personally I think 'At My Window' and 'Deirdre' are throw-aways, and 'ASMTYD' is highly overrated. The rest of the album however is really great (except maybe 'Got to Know a Woman' which is fun, but a little meh); '
This Whole World' is outta this world, and 'Our Sweet Love' has resemblance to GOK (enough said).

39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread. on: August 21, 2013, 12:38:36 PM
Awesome guys. What's the delivery time for you?

Mine says it will be shipped Friday, which means I'll have it Saturday (if all goes well!)

Dutch retailer btw.

Price?

99 euros. That's about the cheapest I could find here in The Netherlands.

Yeah, about the same here in Norway, but no shipment yet. Hoping for friday too!

By the way, if you think MIC is expensive, try the new Small Faces box set: £125 - yes, pounds.
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread. on: August 17, 2013, 11:45:36 AM
Price alert - on deepdiscount.com, they are having a one day sale 15% off.  With the 15%, the price of the box is $110.49.  Free shipping.  Some may think it's still too expensive but I suspect this is the lowest the price will get pre-release - after release all bets are off.

Don't order from deepdiscount if there's a chance you will cancel your pre-order. There's a good chance they will charge you and ship it regardless. Furthermore deepdiscount has the worst customer service known to man. Funnily enough importCDs is excellent though, even though they have the same owners.

What a horrible version of Help me Rhonda. Great sound quality, though. Cool

I see I'm late to the game, it even has its own thread. I guess I should start following other threads than this. Wink

You know that Michael never wrote the lyrics to that song, right?

In that case, he can walk on water.  Grin

Has anyone else noticed how Liam Gallagher and Mike are starting to sound more and more alike. ;p

Explain

I was just listening to some sound clips of off Beady Eye's new album, and the similarity in nasalness is uncanny. :D

Congrats, everyone, on one hundred pages.

I just wanted to be on this page
Wait till it's released-there will easily be 348 pages on WIBNTLA alone.

I wonder if there's anyone brave enough that will come out and say they don't like the song.

Absolutely. There are a lot of folks who don't care for Denny's work. The consensus here is that it's an "ok" song, very much in line with his contemporary work that has been released, but the vocal makes it stand out. Since that is a pretty subjective rubric, it won't blow everybody away as much as if does a select few.

But I'm a hardcore Dennis fan, and I've never listened to Adam Marsland's version, so I expect to fall in love with it. To each their own.

I love a lot of Dennis' work, but I'm also one of those who find POB pretty overrated. It's a nice album, but it doesn't do that much for me. Of course if WIBNTLA is anywhere near the quality of 'Little Bird', 'Lady', or 'Forever', then colour me excited.

Apropos, I'd love to hear a version of 'San Miguel' with Dennis on lead vocal.
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MiC up for order on Amazon, August release on: August 03, 2013, 10:11:07 AM
You know, WIBNTLA has taken on such mythic proportions that I'm almost afraid to listen to it.  LOL

I'm betting a lot of people will be disappointed!
