I suppose if it was a bunch of posts of AGD taking shots at Phil Cohen, the thread would still be alive.

Actually, I was correcting his entirely inaccurate claims and deploring his unwaveringly depressing outlook. But yeah, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. With a bazooka.

Yeah, that was a ridiculous reason for closing the topic. When there's no information about the boxset anyhow, there's no harm in go a little off the topic.

No harm in calling posters homophobic either, huh ?

Come on, Andrew. I defended you. But you should have ignored it because Aegir's statement was just so ridiculous that it couldn't have been serious.
Anyways, I just think it's not that bad talking a bit about Oasis while waiting for more news.

Of course, anything unreleased and unbooted from 65-69 would be my number one pick for the boxset.

When the %^%$@$ did it start to become a bad thing sounding like the Beatles? Geez!

Oasis is not a tribute band, neither are they second rate. They are very obviously influenced by the Beatles, but that doesn't make them bad, or less talented songwriters.
Regardless of Andrew's 'ignorance' (Wink) towards Oasis, his initial comment was quite obviously not homophobic, in fact, I thought Aegir was joking with his reply.

I find it very interesting that you rank Morning Glory so low - the album that is generally viewed as being their best. To me it's really hard to choose between MG and BHN, but I'd rate DM after those two. I feel Oasis is a very time-and-place band - that if you hear a certain album by them at a certain period of time in your life, you'll generally rate that album higher than the others, regardless of quality. You get some sort of special bond to the album. I guess it's like that with a lot of bands, but maybe Oasis in particular. I'm not sure how to properly explain what I mean.

The rockers on What's the story are just not up to par with the rockers on the other 90s albums. Even Hindu times off Heathen Chemistry is far better than any rock song on What's the story IMO

I love 'Hello', but 'Hey Now!' has always been an incredibly weak track to me. Roll With it isn't exactly gold either. 'Morning Glory' is also brilliant but lacks a second verse, simply repeating the second.

Well, what is a 'rocker'? I just think the best songs on MG is better than songs on the other 90s albums (except for a few on BHN which are equal). I mean, songs like 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger', Champagne Supernova (albeit overplayed), 'Some Might Say' and perhaps the best of them all 'She's Electric" are just pretty much perfect songs.

I agree with you on 'Hello' though, it's not all that special. I do like 'Roll With It' a lot on the other hand.

What is a rocker? Hindu times, Supersonic, My big mouth, Do you know what I mean. Basically the uptempo songs that aren't power ballads or pure pop songs (like around the world).

What's the story doesn't have the same diversity as the other 90s albums and Standing on the shoulder. What's the story has the best collection of power ballads but the rockers really stink. Even though I don't want to use that term when talking about Oasis. The rockers on What's the story are not good.

I suspected that's what you called a rocker, but that's a very relative term. I wouldn't call any songs on the album 'ballads' either. But anyways, whatever you may call them, I disagree that the 'rockers' on Morning Glory are bad, songs like Roll With It, She's Electric (which is probably one of their best songs ever IMO - but perhaps you deem that a 'pure pop song'?), Hey Now!, Hello and Morning Glory are all great 'rockers'.

"Broken Arrows" demo

EVERY HOUR, EVERY DAY, SINCE YOU'VE GONE FAR AWAY IT'S A LOVE CANOPY OF DREAMS AND BROKEN ARROWS, AND BROKEN ARROWS.

Well yeah. Coincidentally, I prefer the more sparse demo of that song to any later full band versions, too.

Damn you, Werzer Cry corrected.

I agree. I actually like the Rivers Cuomo phone-demo better too.
110  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Oasis thread? Oasis thread. on: November 11, 2012, 09:32:07 AM
Noel's is clearly stronger, but it lacks that bite Liam has.

Troof, most of the time.

They are a tribute band at best.

Not the troof at all.

To me, Oasis' greatness halted after BHN.

I think there are plenty of great songs after Be Here Now that stand with any of the better stuff from the earlier years. "Go Let It Out", "Roll It Over", "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" (feel especially strong about this one), "As Long As They've Got Cigarettes In Hell", "The Importance Of Being Idle", "Let There Be Love", "The Shock Of Lightning", "I'm Outta Time", etc. I'm sure there are more, I'm still a bit of a n00b with the band.

I agree. Most of those are great songs. For instance, love the mellotron in "Go Let it Out", "TIOFBI" has a great sound to it, etc. While I also like "SCYHO", I don't think it's all that great - the chord progression bores the heck outta me Wink. "I'm Outta Time" is a bit meh, IMO.

I just think that Morning Glory and Be Here Now are more consistant than their later efforts. But that they've produced some great songs post-BHN - no doubt!

I am surprised that you consider oasis worthy of discussion. They are a tribute band at best.

You're insane.

I'm just sad we couldn't continue pissing off the Oasis-haters over at the boxset thread :D
You're completely right about Liam's voice though, runners.

Hell, nothing is happening on this thread so I invite y'all to chat about the merits of Oasis live records as a sideline. Revisiting my yoof...

Big B-Side fan, especially 'Lets All Make Believe' (Mainly since it's not on The Masterplan)

Talking about B-sides (albeit on the MP), 'Half the World Away' is great. Their Pachelbel-fueled 'Whatever' is not too shabby either.
To me, the best Oasis albums are Morning Glory and Be Here Now - I truly love those albums.

I don't understand how anyone can say that Today sounds amazing. Some of the stereo tracks work okay, but really, the stereo portion of the album is a hit and miss in my opinion. Smiley Smile on the other hand..

Today was a mess in mono, too much happening for such a closed mix, it needed stereo.

You misunderstand. It's not about needing stereo or not, I just don't think the sound (e.g. overall EQ settings, compression, etc) of most of the stereo mixes on Today are very good.

Popped into a branch of HMV to look at these new discs. Amazed to see that TWGMTR is in their CD sale display for only £3.
Buy it now folks!

The new discs are £10, so I'm going to have to wait on these. Patience. Patience.

I only have the LP, if I could get the CD that cheap here in Norway, I'd buy it in a flash.
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys 2012 Remasters! on: October 10, 2012, 02:00:07 PM
I disagree. Regardless of the artistic quality, The Beach Boys are one of the greatest bands of all time, and deserve to have their entire catologue out there. If The Beatles and Pink Floyd do, The Beach Boys should. Many lesser groups with even lesser albums have their whole shebang out there, and so should The Beach Boys. Geez, if freakin' Elvis can have all those goofy ass soundtracks he made re-released, The Beach Boys should be afforded the same respect.

And by the way, I think 15 Big Ones and L.A. are pretty sweet.

They ARE still out there in twofer form. I really like 15 Big Ones and M.I.U. - I just don't see any point in having them re-released.

At least "Keepin' The Summer Alive / The Beach Boys" and "15 Big Ones / Love You" seem to be still available.

15 Big Ones
M.I.U Album
L.A. (Light Album)
Keepin' The Summer Alive
The Beach Boys
I'll eat my hat if those albums get a newly remastered 1-CD release...  Wink
I kinda dig all of them, actually.. especially M.I.U. and L.A.. And I got a soft spot for 15 Big Ones, too.  Shrug

Also there's really no need for those. Razz

It's not about digging them or not, it's just not necessary remastering them over again IMO. Like KokoNo said, with highlights from those album on the box, that should be sufficient.

Clip of the sound engineer who worked on the GV remix.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyk9GKFasjY

The mix playing in the background is definitely different from what they released. The vocals have more of a stereo spread.

Damn, I need to know what he used to do that.

Curious to see he is using KRK Rockit 5 monitors there, whether that workstation is where he did the remixing for GV of if that's just where he's playing it for the news crew. And I don't know how you'd mix there for a few hours having to crane your neck upwards to see the monitor like that! Probably just for the cameras.

Yeah! Let's hope he used better monitors than the RP5's for that job Wink

I was never that impressed with them, for my own ears I heard better mixes coming out of Yamaha consumer-grade versions of the NS-10 than those Rockits. But I digress... Cheesy

I think there is something to be said for mixing any similar remix projects on those old, big monitors like they had at Gold Star and Western back in the days when these songs were originally mixed, like those big Altecs and whatnot, just to keep it close to what the original cats were hearing. But then again, only if they're available.

I agree, the Rokit 5's are okay, but nothing more. But they're pretty cheap, I'll give him that. Wink
Actually, Stephen (Desper) and I have been discussing NS10's over at his thread, and I think we came to the conclusion that they're good as cross reference monitors - and that if you can get your mix to sound good on them, it'll sound good anywhere  Cheesy

And I agree in your sentiment about those old classic monitors - it's a neat idea!

I think it's really funny that he's using Audacity.

Wonder what software he used for the actual extraction part - and here's hoping that it will be released commercially.
And yeah, any engineer/producer/etc with respect for themself uses Pro Tools Wink

Mark Linett said this on a Facebook thread I saw - regarding Wild Honey - the album - in stereo.

"WIld Honey the song is in stereo for the first time on 50 Big Ones as is "Darlin" , but some of the songs on the album would be impossible to do in true remixed stereo because only some of the lead vocals exist on the multi-track. On several songs the group recorded the vocals for the first verse , mixed that verse down and then recorded the next verse vocals over the first ones mixed that verse down and so on. I want to say maybe a third of the album has this problem"

Link to FB thread please?

NS-10 History >>> http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep08/articles/yamahans10.htm

Thanks for that Stephen - that was a great read, very informative! I think my experience with the NS10's is somewhere along these lines from the article:

"I found a familiar comment on the SOS Forum that reads: "If it sounds good on NS10s then it'll sound good on anything." Again, that's not because the NS10 is inherently poor, but because it is effective at revealing the fundamental compromises inherent in recorded music." - but like someone else from the SOS forum mentions, they should never be used for anything else than cross reference monitors.

125  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: October 08, 2012, 12:27:39 PM
I hear you regarding the NS10. I've always found them to be good monitors to double check a mix on, but I would never use them alone either! I quite like Genelec's combined with a woofer though (albeit a bit on the bright side).
The 'Virtual Barbershop' is amazing - I heard that one a while back, and it really is incredible! But many of the other 'illusions' I hadn't heard about (Shepard’s paradox for one) - some really interesting stuff there!

COMMENT:

You've got to be kidding? ...................... NS10M for sale on Ebay @ $830.00, the pair. These things are holding their value better than a bar of gold. That's double the original selling price!

Oh, By the way, I've got a used roll of original 1978 paper towel used to damp the tweeters. I'll let it go for a mear $225.00 including shipping!  'cause I'm such a nice guy.
