Great find! Can you shed some light on the This Whole World (Alt vocals / long version)?
It starts with a brief session intro, just a little noodling before the count-in. The opening "I'm thinkin bout this whole world" sounds like Mike instead of Brian--possibly doubled with somebody else but even with headphones I can't be sure. Then it goes into Carl's lead, which is double-tracked. "When girls get mad at boys and go..." is sung by Brian as heard on Disc 6 of Made in California. He sounds awesome! I wish this line made the final cut. "You are there like everywhere" is back to Carl, double tracked again. The wordless break has a different mix with some of the backing vocals featured more prominently, reminding me of the dense, swirling vocal textures on Smile. The Sunflower mix is relatively tame here, favoring Brian's vocal at the expense of the overall blend. You can get a pretty good idea what I'm talking about by listening to the vocals-only mix of this passage and then the Sunflower version. Then, rather than an a cappella fade, the track keeps playing under the "Ah-Oom-Dot-Di-Dit" vocals. Where the song would normally end, Brian comes over the monitor and says, "that's it" but the band jams on for another minute until Brian comes on again saying, "we got it".

Here's another vote for Sunshine Dream
The track list:
Side 1 I Can Hear Music* Here Today Darlin' Caroline, No Aren't You Glad Good Vibrations Side 2 Wouldn't It Be Nice Friends* God Only Knows Vegetables How She Boogalooed It There's No Other (Like My Baby) Side 3 Heroes And Villains All I Want To Do* Wild Honey I'm Waiting For the Day Cotton Fields* Then I Kissed Her Side 4 Sloop John B Be Here In The Mornin' Bluebirds Over The Mountain Keep An Eye On Summer* Do It Again The Beach Boys Medley * = stereo album mixes Everything else = mono
All tracks sound their best. Sunshine Dream has a clean and dynamic mastering that still retains the smooth, airy, vintage blend so futzed with on CD reissues of late. This comp shines fresh light on a very groovy era by mixing hits with some harder to find material, like the mono Do It Again single mix and the OG 20/20 version of Cotton Fields. Where else can you find a transition between tracks as sublime as Friends into God Only Knows into Vegetables?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 15 Big Ones Remix

I remember hearing an excerpt of a radio interview with Brian where they talk about their upcoming album -- what would end up being 15 Big Ones and what was to be (at the time) I think a double-LP, one side of originals and the other of oldies -- and then they play a snippet of what I presume is Brian's mix of "Rock & Roll Music". goshdarn! That was a cookin' bit! It had a duelling guitar solo and just sounded a lot more like actual rock'n'roll compared to what we eventually got (the whole album). Who decided it needed a remix anyway? Brian himself? Carl? Some Warner folks?
I just gave this another listen and it's a GREAT version of the song. It got me wondering whether that's even the same take as the released one; in addition to some parts that I only hear on one or the other version, the radio tape has a whole verse ("Don't care to hear 'em play a tango...") that was eventually dropped. Any thoughts? Also, I was reading about Brian having recorded Come to the Sunshine in October 1975 via AGD's site: "Recorded with Van Dyke Parks - Brian wanted to include the song on 15 Big Ones, but reportedly couldn't locate the master." Does anyone know anything more about this, like if it's even in their tape library? Another track that I hope sees the light of day soon.
