I love that track too John!  Smiley The first time I heard it I thought, why didn't he leave it like that?

Hi Annie ,
I just wanted to thank you for that SMiLE mix. That version of Surf's Up is STILL my favorite and the one I always use on my SMiLE mixes.

Nice Thread Bubbly!
I LOVE this tune. I've been doing an acoustic version of this tune since the 80s (I'm getting old!)
I turned a girl who was into metal onto the Beach Boys with this song, and she ended up loving them!  Smiley

I can understand your frustration for not having "Smile Third Edition", Bgas.  Took me a few years to find mine.

You're killing me over here, Mikie!  Grin

"Surf's Up Part 2" is a 10-minute masterpiece revealing, in graphic detail, the EXACT meaning of 'columnated ruins domino'. Smiley

It's an epic masterpiece to be sure. I just KNEW you were talking about this track earlier when you mentioned "velvet pancakes". I've always found it frustrating that they edited out that small section that can only be found on the fourth edition of the "Brother Records" SMiLE boot LP. Had they not been busted when they were, we would have more than the three known copies that got out. Because I was friends with someone who grew up with someone who had a sister who was friends with a girl who's brother was in on the bust, I got a second generation cassette copy.

I'm curious.... the liner notes of "Smile Second Edition" promise a "Third Edition" to be released sometime in the late 80's.

I'm assuming this never happened?

That 1987 third edition was pressed in small numbers and is impossible to find these days. The only thing on it worthwhile was that section of Heroes And Villains that hasn't turned up anywhere else (including the 2011 SMiLE Sessions release) and Surf's Up Pt. 2 Wink

Totally forgot about that one! I picked up a copy at the Beach Boys convention in San Diego in 1990.

Quick question - are there only four unofficial Smile vinyls?  The original boot (Brother Records), the Second Edition (Brother Records), the 3-LP colored edition (Vigotone) and the recent colored single-disc version (Sea Of Tunes)?

After the 2 "Brother Records" LPs (1983 & 1985) but before the 3-LP colored edition (1993 Vigotone) a 2-LP version was released. This 2-LP release (1991) was the 1st appearance on vinyl of the original “I Love to Say Da Da,” “I’m In Great Shape” aka “I Wanna Be Around” aka “The Workshop Song,” and “Barnyard”. This set has blank white labels. Here is the tracklist.

Side 1: Good Vibrations I * Good Vibrations II * Good Vibrations (Work Pieces) * Barnyard * With Me Tonight (early version)

Side 2: Can’t Wait Too Long * Wonderful * Holidays * Vegatables (including Mama Said) * Child is the Father to the Man

Side 3: Heroes and Villains * Do You Like Worms?/Bicycle Rider * Wind Chimes * Cabinessence * Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine * Our Prayer

Side 4: Tones * Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow (Fire) * George Fell Into His French Horn * Surf’s Up * Cool Water * You’re Welcome * Smile Promo Ad

As far as vinyl boots go, I think the last one I'll try to find is the 'second edition' Brother one.

Does anyone know what's so different about that, other than obviously the removal of the Miles Davis track?  Like, do they use an actual Smile version of "Wonderful" rather than the Smiley Smile one?

Yes, they do. Looks like you just missed one!  Angry

Now that I have this, I have to ask....  Why the 15-minute "Good Vibrations"?  I mean, surely this was not an official edit?!

Also, I find it funny that 22 years after the album, people still didn't know what "Barnyard" was - two songs are given that title in the track list, one being "With Me Tonight" and the other being "False Barnyard".  (Domenic Priore's book also seems to think that "False Barnyard" is the actual song.)

I mean, did the true identity of "Barnyard" not become known until the demo came out in 1998?

No, it's not an official edit, but remember this was before we got official outtakes of this song on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey twofer or the 30 Years of Good Vibrations box set. If I remember correctly, the only Good Vibrations alternate that we had up until that time was the one played on the 1976 radio special. I'm not 100% sure about this, so don't take that as fact until Andrew or Lee chime in and confirm it. The thing that I find most interesting about those Good Vibrations bits on the T 2580-2 CD, is Carl's lead vocal being faded in and out as if the bootlegger was trying to show he had the multitracks available to him. If Andrew or Lee have anything to say about this, I would love to hear it.

Regarding Barnyard, the true identity of that track became known when a "Mystery Writer" contributed a section to an early 1990's edition of Endless Summer Quarterly. All of my ESQ issues are packed away after a move or else I could tell you exactly which issue it was. I think Lee may have known this writer personally, and could probably tell you all about that.  Wink

Lee to center stage please, Lee to center stage.

Royce (Hi Lee  Smiley)

P.S. Lazenby, may I ask how old you are, and when and how you first got into SMiLE? I'm just looking for some context to help me with our future conversations!

Correct - the clips from the 1976 radio special were "it" until this CD came out. As for fading Carl's vocal in and out... that's likely how the master was - remember, Brian punched in for Carl on the highs: you can hear it clearly in the released 45.

Thanks, Andrew!  Smiley
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 25 Years Ago: SMiLE CD T 2580-2 on: October 24, 2014, 02:00:32 AM
27, and my introduction to Smile was buying BWPS about a year after its release - mainly because I wanted to know what the "big deal" was with it.

Thanks, Lazenby, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I'm so happy for you that you didn't have to go through what a lot of us here did in regards to trying to piece together SMiLE. First we had to grab the scattered tracks from their LPs (Smiley, Wild Honey, 20/20, Surf's Up) and even though these weren't the full on SMiLE versions of these songs, this was as close as we could get as of 1971. Then nothing until that 1976 radio special when we got the aforementioned Good Vibrations material. Then in the late 70s, copies of the Jeff Deutch/Byron Preiss cassette tape began making it's way around (NOT by Jeff or Byron, but Brad Elliott) but only in a small circle of connected collectors. The rest of us had to wait until 1983 when material from that tape appeared as the 1st SMiLE boot LP. Then in 1985, the 2nd SMiLE boot LP was released, and was the 1st time we heard "Wonderful" on the harpsichord with Brian singing. Then nothing really "new" until the 1989 T 2580-2 CD you have now. It was a long, tantalizing period to wait to hear SMiLE (or a lot of it, anyway) but as you know, well worth the wait.

In regards to the track intended for "Barnyard", I have my own theory. Though there was a track recorded for "Barnyard" (that included faux animal sounds) on October 20, (same day as the H&V verse tracking was recorded) I believe that by the time Brian demoed H&V for DJ "Humble Harv" Miller on November 04, it was the "False Barnyard" feel Brian was hearing in his head when he played the "Barnyard" section of the demo and it was that feel that the lyrics were written for. Some might say, but that track wouldn't be recorded for 10 more days at that point. They would be correct. At that point though, Brian was closer to the tracking date for "My Only Sunshine" (November 14th) than he was to the previous tracking date for "Barnyard" (October 20th)

You usually conceive something BEFORE you book studio time, or at least have some idea of what you're going to do in your mind before you show up at the studio. That combined with the fact that Brian was just one of many using that studio, and would have to take the next available opening, makes it possible that "False Barnyard" was already in his head before he recorded it. Also, the only SMiLE era mix of H&V done by Brian, has "False Barnyard" as the outro/fade. As if that wasn't enough, we find Brian re-recording the H&V fade on February 28, 1967 and it has the same "feel" as "False Barnyard".

In Jules Siegel's  article "Goodbye Surfing, Hello God" he describes Barnyard like this: "civilized chickens bobbed up and down in a tiny ballet of comic Barnyard melody"

In Michael Vosse's 1967 Teen Set article he says: Brian sits in his bedroom playing the background track to "Heroes and Villains" for a reporter from New York. As the Barnyard section comes over the speaker Brian leaps off his bed. "I'VE GOT IT!"

He laughs and jumps into the center of the room.

"It's a color short. 16 mm. I'll shoot it. Next week. It's a chicken, and the chicken is wearing TENNIS SHOES. The chicken is wearing tennis shoes and he is bopping around the most beautiful pad. Paul Robbins' pad. Somebody get Robbins on the phone. We've got to shoot it next week!"

How does he do it?

Suffice to say, he does it!
-------------------------

Now, which track does that sound more like to you?, "Barnyard" or "False Barnyard"?

I don't think "Barnyard" sounds anywhere near as comical as "False Barnyard" does.

I created a more fleshed out version of the H&V demo just to see what it would sound like, and lo and behold the "Barnyard" section (using "False Barnyard" as the track) turned out beautifully. Much more "musical" and "rhythmic" than the clumsy version on disc 1 of the SMiLE Sessions, AND the piano from the demo is no longer a problem, and actually WORKS with it.

PM me if anyone wants to hear it.

Now, none of this is backed up by evidence, it's just a feeling I have.  Smiley

Your opening post brings back wonderful memories... I was going through a very difficult period in my life then (1989/1990). But I still enjoyed reading Goldmine, it wasn't carried by any normal Dutch magazine seller, but my record retailer had a subscription, and therefore I could get one of the two copies he received each month on a regular basis.

I recall there was a Beach Boys special (IIRC the first round of two-fers was announced), and it had this SMiLE CD from Japan in the reviews section. Five stars and a description of its duration and its contents.

I was blown away. For weeks on end I had just one thought: boots are the work of the devil and I am not allowed to purchase, let alone play such a satanic thing.

But my OCD forced me to visit a record fair in Amsterdam. I tried to skip all racks with BBs stuff, to no avail. God is my witness that I tried to resist temptation with all my might.

Then I saw a stall from a German seller, I still know his name, after 24 years: Norbert Morawitz.

There was that CD divider that read: Beach Boys.

I tried to run out of the building, to pay a visit to the nearest church.

The OCD decided otherwise. My right arm had taken on a life all of its own (much as an addict reaches for the bottle, against his will). I browsed. I found the item we speak of here. It cost 100 Dutch guilders, and that was not abnormal.

I bought it, much to my ethical chagrin.

Seated in the train home, I tried to throw this CD out of the window, many times.

I did not succeed.

At home, I reached for a cigarette lighter, to render the CD unplayable. The lighter wouln't work. It was empty.

So I gave in, and played the d*mn thing.

And got an aural orgasm.

(To all legal parties: this account is fictional in nature. It's the privilege of any writer.)

Sorry to hear that things weren't going so well then. I hope things are much better now.  Smiley

I used to pick up my copies of Goldmine at my local record store too....I miss those days.
I think I remember the issue you're talking about. It was yellow and had Crosby, Stills and Nash (porch photo) on the cover.
Inside was a whole 2 or 3 page article about The Beach Boys on CD. I still have my copy.

We all understand that you didn't really want to buy it, and commend your efforts to do away with the evil item that followed you home. That it jumped into your CD player when you were reaching for the cigarette lighter, is not your fault. Forgive yourself and go in peace my son.  Wink 2

Great post Don!  Smiley

Tricycle Rider, isn't that the Japanese SMiLE that came out around 1990? Think I paid 30 or 40 bucks for that at the time. The Japanese T2580-2 CD has no indication of who released it. That's an excellent quality disc that was supposedly compiled by Linett when a legit release of SMiLE was considered in 1988. This contained the original versions of Wind Chimes and Vega-Tables, Brian’s solo demo of Surf’s Up, and 7 minutes of unreleased Heroes and Villains segments.

1978/’79 – The "Priess tape".
1983 – First SMiLE bootleg, vinyl.
1985 - Second SMiLE bootleg, vinyl.
1989 – First SMiLE bootleg, CD.
1989 – Mark Linett SMiLE mixes, CD
1990 – Smile - Japanese T-2580-2, CD.
1990 - Smiley Smile 2-fer (bonus tracks - Cantina!) Priore played the tape of Heroes a few years before at a Beach Boys fan convention in Oakland, California.
1993 – Good Vibrations box set (bonus tracks).
1993 - SMiLE - Vigotone 110/111 2-CD boot.
1993 - SMiLE - Vigotone 3 album set, multiple colored vinyl.
1995 – Dave Prokopy SMiLE 3 tape set.
1998 - SMiLE - Heroes and Vibrations.
1999 - Sea Of Tunes Vol. 15 - Good Vibrations Sessions 3-CD boot. First heard alternate Good Vibrations (Asher lyrics) in 1976.
1999 – Sea Of Tunes Vol. 16, 17. Best quality SMiLE tracks to date.
2000 - SMiLE - Millenium edition.
2001 – Archeology.
2001 - Project SMiLE.
2004 - Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE (including instrumental tracks not included on original release).
2004 - Secret SMiLE.
2004 - Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 1 & 2.
2005 - SMiLE – Purple Chick Reconstruction.

The ones on Sphinx are "Alive and Smiling" and "Good Vibrations: Smile".  "Alive and Smiling" is the one with live tracks. There's another old one too called "Smile - Bits and Pieces".

The Japanese 2580, Sea Of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters 16 & 17 (box set), and the Vigotone sets were the best quality sound wise, I believe.

Hey Mikie  Smiley

Yup, that's the one. Nice list you put together! The following are what I have from that list:

1983 – First SMiLE bootleg, vinyl.
1985 - Second SMiLE bootleg, vinyl.
1989 – First SMiLE bootleg, CD.
1989 – Mark Linett SMiLE mixes, CD
1990 – Smile - Japanese T-2580-2, CD.
1990 - Smiley Smile 2-fer (bonus tracks - Cantina!) Priore played the tape of Heroes a few years before at a Beach Boys fan convention in Oakland, California.
1993 – Good Vibrations box set (bonus tracks).
1993 - SMiLE - Vigotone 110/111 2-CD boot.
1993 - SMiLE - Vigotone 3 album set, multiple colored vinyl.
2001 – Archeology.
2001 - Project SMiLE.
2004 - Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE (including instrumental tracks not included on original release).
2004 - Secret SMiLE.
2004 - Heroes and Villains Sessions Part 1 & 2.
2005 - SMiLE – Purple Chick Reconstruction.

You said "The Japanese 2580, Sea Of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters 16 & 17 (box set), and the Vigotone sets were the best quality sound wise, I believe."

I couldn't agree more. Has anybody tried to go through these "previous releases" to see if there is anything on them that either didn't turn up on the "SMiLE Sessions" 2011 release, or turned up in a more edited form?
