Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Lorren Daro Thread

Lorren, There are those of us that are enjoying your company, trying to ask decent questions, and trying above all, to learn some things. Please consider staying around a bit longer for US. Perhaps you could just stop replying to those only interested in antagonism of one sort or another?
The "How To Speak Hip" LP is a riot isn't it? I suppose that whole culture began with "fast talking" (a phrase most will not get these days)
My mind is blown about Brian not knowing who Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Cary Grant were! I mean, how could ANYBODY be that isolated? (a rhetorical question) It must have been something to see that kind of musical mind wrapped in such an uncultured young man.
This brings something to mind. (for me anyway) What the F**K has happened to education in this country? How did we get from the International Geophysical Year to here in such a short time?. I had a long discussion with my dear departed friend Rick Jaeger (drummer for Dave Mason, Pointer Sisters, Crosby Stills and Nash etc...) and he was just beside himself over it. People (warning, sweeping generalization) are so stupid these days it's painful. I suppose any culture infatuated with famous people and money is bound to turn out like this.
Did you ever try to turn Brian on to other musical artists, or did you think he didn't need that?
What instrument(s) do you play? What were your musician experiences? Is it OK to talk about things other than Brian?
Turn Signal:
What do you think about anti gravity technology and other life in the universe? (seriously)

Lorren, What about Capitol Records? 1. How did they pressure Brian, and was he the only one they hounded? 2. Did they ever show up at the studio and hassle him while he was trying to record? 3. Did you ever see, or did Brian ever say, that he was encountering trouble at the studio(s) in regards to him "touching" the consoles/studio equipment? (you know, Union Rules and all that) 4. Are you aware of any hassles Brian encountered with them regarding "Singles" releases? Thanks, Royce

Hi Lorren,
Random questions:
1. How obvious were Marylin, Murry and Mike in their desire to control Brian?
2. Was it to his face, or behind his back?
3. What methods did each of them use, and was it coordinated in any way?
4. How long after you befriended Brian did you point these things out to him?
5. Did he already seem aware of some of this, and what was his initial reaction to you telling him these things?

Notice how all this is slowing down? I’m not the new novelty any more. It’s okay. Glad to have had this experience. Some very fine people here… I don't know about anyone else, but I wanted to wait until it got a little less intense so you wouldn't feel so overwhelmed! I'd like to hear about your experiences with Danny Hutton. He seems like a sincere and interesting guy.

Been following this alternately fascinating and disheartening thread for the last day or two.
My main question is: Why must Lorren Daro be right for his contributions to this forum to be valuable? He is not a scholar, he is not a professional expert writing a history of the band or Brian Wilson. He is a participant in the story at a particular period of time, and anyone who has done in-depth research or conducted interviews knows that the memories of participants can be wildly divergent, and often incorrect.
The value of what Lorren might have to contribute is not in its factual accuracy, but in his perspective. You may think his perspective is wrong on many issues, but that doesn't make it valueless. His perspective--especially when very different from the consensus--is exactly what makes his comments potentially interesting to us. We don't have to agree with them, and it's perfectly fine to personally believe they may be skewed by an agenda, but exploring them with him, by weaving another voice into the fabric, can only make our understanding of this time period fuller. Just use your brains, the confirmed facts, and your own judgment to evaluate the accuracy or potential accuracy of what you're hearing.
One specific comment: It's not really so surprising Daro might not remember being at the "Help Me, Rhonda" session, even if he was, in fact, there. After all, the infamous dialogue tape suggests very little of value was recorded. Perhaps Daro has no memory of being at a Rhonda session because it wasn't even apparent what they were recording that day?
Finally a voice of reason. What he said. What they said.

I would like to know what artists/styles of music you guys were listening to at your house parties, and did anybody bring music with them, or were you at the helm where that was concerned. (since these were held at your home) I ask because you made a comment about "Vegetables" being a song you weren't fond of, and I know it's a favorite here, so it made me wonder what kinds of music "turned you on" in your life. I imagine you must be well aware of the entire "culture" that sprang up around the non-release of SMiLE, and I think some of our members are going to be squirming in their seats a bit that someone who was there wasn't completely knocked out by it. If this is the real Lorren Daro and I think it most probably is, we should respect him for Brian"s sake. We should treat him well because he's a fellow human being. Welcome back Lorren!...Thank you for returning. I'm sorry for the way some of our forum members treated you. I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences. P.S. Oh man. I've watched a little bit more of it tonight. It's TERRIBLE. The scene where Duke is in the phone booth pretending he's Ringo is the WORST English accent I've ever heard. Not London, Not Manchester, Not Liverpool. More like, Australian, Southern United States, and the worst Terry Thomas impression you can imagine all rolled into one and alternating every few words. I thought of Andrew (G. Doe) IMMEDIATELY and felt embarrassed to be American and "I" wasn't even there!
This thing is a train wreck I just can't look away from.
Good Lord....
Duke: "I'll prove I'm Ringo. Yea yea yea yea" Girls: AHAHAHAAAH Me: ...Seriously? The longer this movie went on, the worst it got. Yet, I can't look away either. That proves he's Ringo alright! The only Beatle NOT singing on "She Loves You"!....hahahaha Dig that awful "Beatles" song at the end! https://www.sendspace.com/file/y2zc8lFollow the bouncing Beach Ball ________________________________________________ I Wanna Marry A BeatleYeah, Yeah Yeah YEAH! We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want a hold of their hand, yeah yeah yeah YEAH! John, Paul, George or Ringo too, We love em all and any one will do, One is good, but we'd rather have two. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want one of Ringo's rings, yeah yeah yeah YEAH! Just like the gold one on his drummer hand, We hope some day it'll be a wedding band, Then he's sure to know we're his biggest fan. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Solo! (scream!) We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want him please to sing, yeah yeah yeah YEAH! Every day we'll just sit and stare, And when he sings to us we'll be-a floatin' on air, We're gonna run our fingers through his mop-top hair. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! Since we saw him standing there, yeah yeah yeah YEAH! We'll never forget when he touched our glove, To get it to him we had to push and shove, and when he said to us "I Say, Don't Do That Luv". Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! We want to marry a Beatle Oooh! Poor Brian. Paramount enlists The Beach Boys to help give their awful film a boost, (even naming it after one of their songs) only to have them play second banana to The Beatles.
After the boys play Little Honda:
Selma: That group is pretty good, don't you think Duke? Duke: Mmm...not bad. Cynthia: We were thinking of hiring them for a show our sorority's gonna give. Georgia: I think they're almost as good as The Beatles. Duke: You must be kidding (laughs)...the boys would sure get a kick out of that. Cynthia: What boys? Duke: Huh?..oh nothing...you know, Paul, John, Ringo...The Beatles. (poor George...2nd class Beatle already!)
I love both groups, so please, no Beach Boys vs. Beatles stuff. It's just something I couldn't help noting.

We know The Beach boys were already fans of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's work with the Coasters, so I think Brian would have gone along a similar path even without Phil on the scene, because he would have been aware of what Leiber and Stoller were doing with The Drifters over at Atlantic. (castanets, strings, big reverb etc...) P.S. Great idea for a blog!

I live in St Paul. In the 70s I knew a friend of the BB who had a monster basement sound system that I sold him along with a dude named Bob Rolle. I'll try to contact the friend and post more depending on his privacy concerns.
You sold him a sound system along with Bob Rolle?...I wonder how Bob's parents felt about that? Seriously though, it would be great to finally have this mystery solved. How did you find this place, much less this old thread? Welcome to the forum!

I don't have ANY experience in this downloading thing, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but, does ANYBODY offer lossless downloads? and if so, why aren't they the most well known name in downloading land. This mystifies me. How can the music industry be this far behind the curve?
My guess is that under the old business model each individual record company/label were in competition with each other and that's just the way it was for a long time. When Napster came along in what was it? 1998? or so? the record companies would have been smart to realize that the only way to survive would be to band together and start selling lossless files on one BIG site that represented all of them. They could have reissued long out of print titles with little expense to them and used the income to exploit err, I mean, promote young new acts. I don't know. This whole thing is just a disorganized fu**ing mess. I'm with Matt. Sell me a CD or DVD with Hi-Resolution files or at least let me download lossless/Hi-Resolution files. It's an insult to The Beach Boys, Chuck Britz, Steve Desper, Mark Linett and Alan Boyd's hard work to do anything less.

The review streams of the Smile Sessions box version had some bvs. The actual box version didn't: apparently someone put up the wrong mix on the stream. Depends on the point of view - from my point of view, they put the wrong mix in the box! I agree with Micha. We already have too much SMiLE without completed vocals to intentionally leave vocals OFF something that had them! It wouldn't matter so much to me except for the fact that getting "Barnyard" from a clean tape source (WITH the vocals) was one of the things I was most looking forward to about the SMiLE Sessions release. I hope Mark and/or Alan are reading this. P.S. IF Mark and/or Alan are reading this, NICE JOB on the new release!

Holy sh*t... This makes me super excited for a 1965 comp.
It makes ME super excited for the 1966/1967 comps! Before those get here, may I be the first one to beg, plead etc..Mark & Alan to give us that version of Barnyard with the backing vocals on it that was included on the 2011 SMiLE Sessions review streams. PLEASE. Also, Any other SMiLE material that you guys wanted to include on the 2011 release but ran out of disc space for. P.S. No more Good Vibrations unless you found the vocal multitracks or succeed in reversing the polarity of the hit single's backing track and can use it to isolate the vocals from the mono single. Pretty Please!

A good idea. Unfortunately, those aren't the "good" parts of the notes (those are still MIA)... Have no fear - a couple of minor errors in the sessionography need to be fixed - including the date discrepancy for the title track that AGD pointed out. Ooh, ooh... do I get a teeny weeny credit in the revised version for being a nitpicking smart-arse ? Keep An Eye On Summer, Revised Version, Take Two: We would like to thank Andrew G. Doe for being a nitpicking smart-arse.
