Or did Linnett just think it sounded better as the intro to Fire instead of H&V when he began working on the project in the late 80s?

pretty sure that's the case.

29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My Father Loves Pet Sounds/Smile Sessions...My Mom Loves All Summer Long/Today ? on: December 25, 2011, 04:22:24 PM
My mom is a general fan of the boys, nothing too serious. Dad was always a fan as well, but he passed on before I could really ask him about it, but his BB record collection included Wild Honey all the way through Sunflower, a couple greatest hits, and Mom says Carl was always his favorite beach boy.
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A Ten-episodes official web series on the SMiLE Sessions is now on YouTube on: December 02, 2011, 03:48:26 PM
I'm really, really, REALLY hoping they go balls-out on studio footage with the last episode! ::fingers crossed::

Honestly (aside from the abrupt intro), I don't think i've ever enjoyed a complete version of Love to Say Dada quite as much as i did this one. Well done  Smiley
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What Would Brian have Done After SMiLE? on: November 26, 2011, 01:21:06 PM
I could have seen Brian scoring films...that's  what Run James Run was all about.

What exactly is "Run James Run"? Never heard of it before.

Hey all! Thanks to guitarfool2000 posting this:

questlove Questo of The Roots
yo. this SMILE boxset is a friggin GOLDmine of sampleable ish and treats.

I decided to have a hand at remixing Heroes and Villains. It's got parts from a lot of sections from the Heroes and Villains session disc (and also a vocal from the Pet Sounds Sessions (cheating? yeah, but it sounds good I think!)). Let me know what you think of it!

Wow! very cool, especially with how the Unreleased Background vocal fits over the cantina part

I just saw Questlove tweeting about this a couple days ago after talking about how the SMiLE box set was a sampling goldmine.

37  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Child is father ...... on: November 13, 2011, 03:00:25 PM
Has anyone here managed to isolate the chorus vocals? (both new and old)

I would love to hear that, but i don't know how to really go about trying to isolate vocals from a mono mix without an identical instrumental version or some sort of sound-spectrum software (similar to the one used for a Good Vibrations stereo mix that one smiley smiler here put together)
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: All things TSS packaging, presentation and booklet etc on: November 05, 2011, 08:01:45 AM
Without having actually listened to the cd's(yet), I'm going to go ahead and say that this is probably the best music box set ever released. The 3D box is one of the most unique things I've ever seen. Grin The book with the original artwork is amazing. The detail of the track by track session guide is mind numbing. I got a headache just reading it.  Grin My eternal thank you's and devotion to whoever was in charge of sorting through all that session information. God's among men.  Cool Actually, the detail given to the entire package is phenomenal. One get's the distinct impression that this has secretly been in the planning for years. I have a few quick questions, if I may:

1. When I opened the 3D box lid I saw on the inside the well known picture of the group without Brian, but with Bruce, and the various song titles. Is this an LP? I ask because there was already one in the package that was loose. Were there supposed to be two? If it is one of the LP's, I have no idea how to get it loose from the inside lid. It's really packed in tight. I could pry it out by sticking my finger way down in, but I would most likely ruin the box. Any thoughts, suggestions, etc?

2. I assume that the paper with the track list and picture of the box contents is supposed to work as the back cover? The bottom is folded over, so I can just tuck it in tightly, but then the top part is loose. Should it be put inside the box? I'm not going to tape or glue it if I don't have to.

The inside of the lid of the box is just a "for-fun" exact reprint of the abandoned back sleeve. Notice how it mentions being "Duophonic", while the actual LP sleeve says Monophonic.
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Wonderful on: November 04, 2011, 06:42:27 AM
Never noticed the 'yodeling' during the 'yore the lady who' until the backing vocals montage.

friging perfection is what it is

Wonderful in the backing vocals montage legitimately blew my mind.  Brian's Trip  Especially the main line, which sounds to me like Mike. (Can someone confirm that for me?)

Rolling Stone - 4.5/5 stars

"'There is a moment in this five-CD ocean of music when you agree with its creator, the Beach Boys composer-producer Brian Wilson, that the greatest pop album 'ever made is still within reach. It comes during an October 1966 session for "Do You Like Worms." "You were strumming too hard," Wilson tells bassist Carol Kaye after identifying a tiny irritant spoiling the track’s dreamy symmetry of kettledrum march and hula-dance sway. "I knew I'd find it," he adds brightly, "if I really searched and reached out."

'It was a brief optimism. 'Smile '– Wilson's attempt to extend the opulent mosaic ambition of the Beach Boys' 1966 hit "Good Vibrations" across an entire LP – was soon on its way to infamy: the best rock album never finished, a victim (after more than 80 sessions over nine months) of Wilson's indecisive perfectionism and his band's rebellion against the music's complex symphonic melancholy. Wilson's main conspirator, lyricist Van Dyke Parks, was exiled from the project, and his dream record was replaced by a pale shadow, ''Smiley Smile. ''Wilson’s long dark age had begun. '

'The first disc in this box features the closest thing we may get to the original ''Smile ''as Wilson envisioned it, with versions of songs later rescued and/or reworked for other albums, such as "Surf's Up" and "Cabin Essence." The episodic composition and instrumental surrealism, closer to acid-bent Aaron Copland than Dick Dale, explain the 'dissatisfaction of the other Beach Boys. Think of this Smile 'as Wilson's first solo album, with those voices as ''golden brush strokes. Look at Wilson's 2004 rerecording of 'Smile 'as the refined version.'

'It is easy to project a fear of failure in Wilson's obsession with revision and minutiae in the so-called "session highlights," including more than 30 takes and fragments of the operetta "Heroes and Villains." But there is delight and confidence in Wilson’s exchanges with his studio crew. And the Beach Boys' vocal rehearsals for "Our Prayer" are sublime evidence of ''Smile's ''fundamental greatness: the searching and reaching of genius in its prime. Wilson never found it, but the greatest pop album ever made is still in here, somewhere. '"

I love this 1967 version, but all the glitches in the sound detract from the quality and can be distracting at times.  Otherwise?  Gorgeous.

no glitches on my version.

Heck, i want fleet foxes to do the vocals of SMiLE duets.

+1

I don't know if its my EQ settings or what, but the "Truck-Drivin Man" vocals are SUPER present in the vinyl, like more than ever, and the ending tag sounded the best it's ever sounded to me.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: October 31, 2011, 05:45:31 PM
Surfs up 67' done in a lower key and complete with that weird wild honey piano.

Is it in a lower key or a lower octave? Sounds like the same key to me.

seems to me to be about a halfstep lower, until "Surf's Up, mmhmmm mhmm" when it modulates up a half step, back to the key of the original demo.

I would guess the change in key isn't so much to do with the piano and more to do with Brian later calling the song a "piece of sh*t" and then saying he wasn't the right vocalist for the song.

Sad

Now, i wouldn't necessarily say that.  I'd liken it to something along the lines of the SS version of Wind Chimes, which ended up a half step lower than the original version. It's just a bit of a different vibe....in this case, a more "real" performance (and by real, i mean live) recorded all at once, as apposed to tracking the piano, and then double tracking the vocals like in the '66 demo.

Also, if he wanted to do that modulation at the end like that, maybe he'd rather it end in the original key, so he decided to modulate the first part of the song down, instead of the last part up.

Phew, after they told me it was back-ordered, I sent an angry email, and they responded and let me know that I was given wrong information and that my box would arrive on-time.  Smiley

Psst.  George.  If you *really* want the CD, I know a place you can buy one.  It's this little known place nobody wants to tell you about.  They even put them in every city.  It's called "Wal-Mart".  Box Set.  2CD set.  1 CD.  They got all that sh*t.  It's already in their back room.  They'll put it on the shelf midnight monday.  So if Amazon screws you, just look up "Wal-Mart" in the phone book.  OR, you could just drive 2 miles in 1 direction from your house and invariably bump into one.

Wal-Mart? What's that? Do they sell walls there?  Roll Eyes

Seriously, man.  No need to be mean about it.  You'll have to excuse me if I don't prefer to shop at Wal-Mart...in the Baltimore area, it's not exactly the "place to be", especially considering the recent story in a which a woman was followed into the store and attacked with bleach and pine sol by a stranger.

The bottom line is: I ordered from Amazon, which is highly-regarded online store, very early on, and my order has seemingly been backordered while others who ordered much later will be receiving their sets on-time. I have a right to be a little irked.
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: October 30, 2011, 10:10:08 PM
As long as it doesn't say "out of stock" on the main amazon page for the product, you'll get it november first. I was saying that for the past few days, even before my order shipped. Imma duck out now for a while, because the conversations kind of boring. Just keep cool and everything will work out.

I'm trying, i'm trying.  Undecided
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: October 30, 2011, 09:58:05 PM
Somebody explain something to me.  I'm serious about this.

Why in the hell do people order these things from Amazon or somewhere like that anyways?  Just drive to the store and buy it when it comes out.  No worrying about shipping.  No worrying about getting a beat up copy.  I just don't get it.  I know they're cheaper sometimes but in most cities you can get it just as cheap somewhere, Best Buy, Target, whatever.  I bought Brian's "Disney" CD off the shelf at Best Buy for 10 bucks.  Ain't no way in hell anybody beat that online.

I mean I understand if you're in a small town and nothing's around that might have it, but most people live at least within an hour or so of some kind of major store that would carry it.

Too many times have I gone to a store on the day of a release, only to be told they had only gotten "one or two copies that were bought already."

This is the notice i just recieved.

"I've checked your order and can confirm "The Smile Sessions Box Set" is now back-ordered. I'm very sorry about this delay--we certainly didn't expect this would happen.

I want to make sure your order gets to you faster once we have stock. To help make up for the delay, I've upgraded the shipping method to One-Day Shipping at no extra charge.

Although the shipping method is faster, it'll still take some time to get the CD. As soon as we receive more stock, we'll ship your order and send you an e-mail to let you know.

I'll follow up with you personally on November 3 to make sure that your order has shipped. Thank you for your patience on this."

Completely unbelievable and unacceptable. I was one of the first to order the item, and a Prime member at that, yet many orders placed much later by people in the U.S. have already shipped out.

Does the fact that I'm paying less make my order less important?

...Furious.  Angry
