Hi!

Been ages since I've posted here....A happy day. It makes me SMILE Smiley - Anyhow....I picked up the 2 CD as that's all I can afford at the moment. After all these years it still feels like a bootleg  Wink Anyhow - I do think Capitol made a big mistake allowing the vinyl to be purchased separately for the audiophiles - but for folks like me that are not interested in the vinyl (for many differing reasons), we are forced to buy the deluxe just to get the 5 CD set (which should have been the deluxe set on its own). I WILL eventually have to buy the deluxe set as is - but I know many collectors who are waiting for the torrents to offer the 5 CD set of material (and needle-drops of the exclusive mixes on the vinyl) for free and will skip on the deluxe due to the cost alone. IMO, Capitol would move many more deluxe sets without including the vinyl.  Until then, I will have suffer until I can afford to purchase the box set.... Sad

I've viewed the whole thing, and it's absolutely astonishing to see it so clear, and sound so good. There will be lots of cool extras, with a complete collectible booklet.

Could you possibly post a full-fledged review about the entire DVD's contents? It would be appreciated by all!

Thanking in advance!

I can certainly see/hear an improvement judging by this Youtube clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDIBMaCTwFw

This is a MAJOR improvement over SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SUMMER DVD. Now, I'm VERY excited about acquiring this release. Could this show have the Beach Boys greatest live performance ever. My vote is yes!

So if I've read this correctly, this is still a kinescope though we're getting it duped from the 35 mm negative this time? It then should look many times better than the source used on SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SUMMER.

The beach Boys portion looks identical to the SASOS footage. The entire show is amazingly clear!

If the Beach Boys portion is identical to what's on SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SUMMER DVD, then all we have is digitally cleaned up kinescope. It can't be that amazlingly clear from this source.  If it's from video it should have a better frequecny response and be less tinny than the kinescope audio. Can you elaborate/compare/a-b the different sources for us?

Thanking in advance!

Yes I 'm wondering if it's sourced (for this DVD) from 2" video or the kinescope? Does it look better than what's on the SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SUMMER collection?

[ Let's face it, the BBs aren't exactly the Grateful Dead!!

Best line written. It sums it up nicely....*sigh*. But you know... if it weren't for bootlegs, no one would be keeping their "flame" alive much anymore. Look at what ULTRA RARE TRAX, UNSURPASSED MASTERS and the Great Dane mega box set, LIVE ON THE BBC did for the Beatles collectors. It  forced Apple's hand to release unreleased gems from the vault. Dr. Ebbetts  Beatles releases had the same effect on the most recent Beatles In Mono box set. KEEP THE FLAME ALIVE Wink

Hmmm... touchy subject, Cal. All of us respect your curiosity deeply. But, see, since 'circulating' stuff is immoral, we do our utmost best to avoid it like the plague. We never purchase or borrow it, or download it. Yet, by some grace of the Divinity, we succeed sometimes in, um, 'channeling' it, as it were. So we know some content without ever having been within 10,000 miles near it.

I hope I could make our (or at least, my) position clear... Wink

*LOL* -- But it shouldn't be a "touchy subject" as this board was created to talk about an often bootlegged and unrleased album, SMILE.

Talking about "what's out there" is different from saying "Can anyone tell me where to find/purchase it?" That is obviously left for PM's. But it seems the last few years since the GET THE BOOT releases and the last SOT set, folks are tight lipped about what's out there? I'm sure there's plenty "circulating" aand that would be good to know. It's my job then (obviously) to find out "how to" without putting the board in jeapordy. Something I understand. But is the "Beach Boys Police" to be that feared?

Some might know me as "Beatle Bob" on the Bootlegzone and 910 board (and on the For Elvis CD Collectors board) where this stuff is very open and things circulate very freely. It's refreshing.  Many new finds are uploaded for other collectors often. Compilations by Purple Chick were found via these avenues (PM's). Recent broadcast material like the recent George Martin Producers show and the BBC broadcast with upgrades is now available for everyone.....so why's it so different with my other favorite group the last few years? ...*SIGH*

Can anyone give me a run-down of what's "circulating" of late?

Does anyone compile newsreel reports of the Beach Boys coming and going to and from concerts, and events in the early to mid-60's? Are there available newsreel footage of the Beach Boys performing live? Are there circulating live tv shows from the 60's, say from the '64 Austrailian tour?

I know as a Beatles collector too, all this (for thiem) is quite readily avaialble for collectors, but for the Beach Boys either it's not been collected or no one offers it up for collectors to compile.

Thanking in advance!

I said it before, and I'll say it again.....for me, this is the last Beach Boys "sounding" LP they ever did. Everything (LP-wise) after, is stale. For me, they lack any spark or life . This album is full of recognizable Beach Boys harmonies and has melodies that don't seem forced. I find this the last album I get any joy out of.

Apparently in the UK the Beatles CDs have failed to make #1 on the LP chart because of a Best Of by a lady called Vera Lynn (of 'We'll Meet Again'/'Bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover' fame) - released to coincide with Britain's entry into WW2, 70 years ago 3/9/39.

Shades of '67, where Engelbert Humperdinck kept Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever off the #1 single position (at least in the BBC chart - you know, the one that DID have Please Please Me at #1 !!)

Yeah but many fail to point out the Beatles re-released their ENTIRE catalog of albums at once:  Stereo albums available individually and in a box set, PLUS a mono box set. I think these would tally up to more than Vera Lynn's total for her release being #1. I'm sure if the Beatles released one title at a time, each and everyone would top out at #1 in the UK and US.

If I remember correctly, in the synced up GOK footage from the concert, we see a tv monitor and board. Something was arranged for THAT to be there. Was it videotaped for possible future use or broadcast locally in Hawaii perhaps? Who was contracted to be there with that equipment and where's that footage?

I tell you, I'm just overwhelmed with the everything done to these Beatles albums. The mono box has wonderful packaging, with the CDs in cardboard sleeves with a plastic overwrap (resealable like a Dr. Ebbetts release) and they are easy to remove from the sleeves. Comes with a 40+page booklet.  The stereo discs are in beautiful digipacks with glossy booklets with new liner notes, session info, etc. Classy presentation all around.

The audio is what makes these remasters the talk of the town though. The mono discs are crisp, full of snap and punch. There are times things like a cowbell jumps out at you unexpectedly from a mono recording. Case in point: MONO MASTERS disc #1, "I Call Your Name". Whoa. How'd they do that?  SGT. PEPPER'S rocks harder. The WHITE ALBUM same thng. Stereo PAST MASTERS -  just listen to the opening part of "Thank You Girl" with the hard strumming guitars and pounding drums by Ringo. It will knock you out of your seat. Crank up "Paperback Writer" and you are enwrapped in a rock and roll song that gains power like never before. Guitar jabs on "I Me Mine" from LET IT BE pierce your ear drums. They want to bleed. ABBEY ROAD...the drums. Ringo's drums benefit as well as Paul's bass.  My speakers never heard such bass frequences before. It rattles and I have to turn the bass down! The moog synthesiser isn't muddy. The anvil on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" feels like a lightning bolt to the brain. I've never heard bongos on "A Hard Day's Night" until I spun the stereo remaster.

This clarity and newfound power to these recordings is remarkable. A hazy layer that always masked these recordings are now gone. It's almost like hearing new mixes...but they're not! They sound like a revitalized band thanks to the wonderful and superb job done by the mastering team. Right now, I'm redescovering them, hearing new anomolies, and detail with such definition that I never expected to hear. I'm now in Abbey Road's Studio 2!

There's plenty of stuff that goes around that can be found if you know where to look. Not much in the way of "new songs" but mostly sessions, alternate mixes and such. Completists only mainly. Stuff that went around over 30 years ago.

Yes, most collectors know this, but my concern is why there isn't new or upgraded Beach Boys material of late?  It seems to have basically dried up-- but for other artists such as the Beatles, new and upgraded material still gets issued on bootleg quite regularly.

Wee Helper,

HI! Yes ALL THIS IS THAT was the title I couldn't think of. Thanks.

You know in the Beatles collecting world new stuff keeps coming out (Misterclaudel's JOHN LENNON HOME TAPES recently) and many upgraded video sources of their early tv performances. There are so many unseen (on bootleg) early Beach Boys performances,( ie; Australia '64) that I'm surprised just doesn't show up for instance. And where's that 2nd LEID IN HAWAII show that circulates (but never made it to silver disc) that contains that one-off instrumental that opens up the set (was it called "Hawthorne Blvd"Huh? or something like that?). I know many have told my privately that it circulates, but if I'm correct this 2nd LEID show never has made it officially to bootleg?

As some of you may have noticed, especially if you're also a Beatles fan, that  I've been acquiring many new Beatles and solo Beatles bootlegs that the prolific bootleggers have been issuing quite continually and regularly and have posted reviews on the many Beatles message boards and email lists--and I have been wondering why isn't there much new Beach Boys bootlegs appearing in the the last few years that either have new or upgraded material? It's been very quiet for Beach Boys bootlegs! In years past whether it was Vigotone, SOT, Dumb Angel--we were treated to much new material quiet often. The last real gasp was a few years back when SECRET SMILE (there was also another SMILE set too, which name escapes me), GET THE BOOT (Vol. 1 - 2) and the SOT release, IN THE BEGINNING: THE GARAGE TAPES. This year only one release of note appeared. It was an upgraded source tape for the London '68 show from HMC entitled, LIVE IN LONDON (1 CD/1 DVD set).

Have I missed anything else of note whether it's an upgraded source or new to bootleg and does anyone know of anything in the pipeline? (aside from surfers Wink )

Any info is appreciated!

Also a few years back John Hunt from the SMILE SHOP was working on a book about SMILE outtakes with Doug Sulpy that was (from what I understood) to be like Doug's "910's GUIDE TO BEATLES OUTTAKES" books -- that would incorpoate every SMILE session tape available and correspond it to the best available sounding version on bootleg for us collectors. Has anyone  since, attempted to do this,--possibly online since the Hunt/Sulpy book never was completed?

Yes, I have. Recently. For archival/catalog purposes.

Is this available for us to access or can it be made available?
