I don't buy many BBs books these days, but I've never regretted purchasing this one for a single second. So much great info in there!

FWIW, I did get a refund from him two weeks after the cancellation was announced. He offered either a refund, or to have him hold on until he got the legal crap untwisted, at which point you'd get your copy of First Wave; I opted for the refund.

I also seem to remember that there was the option to roll our First Wave investment over into the planned sessionography book. Some type of tier system if I remember correctly. I chose one of those tier options......and, of course, nothing came to pass.

So long ago...and so fuzzy in my memory. Other than the "out the money" part, that is.

I'm happy (and relieved) to report that my order finally arrived yesterday.  Apparently, one of my daily emails must have finally been attended by someone, but the utter lack of any response, whatsoever, is still a little head-scratching.

I'm a patient guy and had I received even one single reply from anyone (whether it was a shipping confirmation or just a simple acknowledgement that I had been heard), I would have been content to wait patiently while things had been sorted-out on their end.

As it stands right now, though, I'd probably feel a little reticent about ordering through these folks again.

Anyway, I know this thread is about the show, and I'll share my thoughts on the complete performance at another time (also arriving at my door yesterday was a new novel, so I'll be busy having fun over the next two days, or so).

And, I totally agree with you: The whole lack of customer service was really starting to get frustrating and exhausting for me as well --  continually ignoring e-mails, calls and contact forms is simply inexcusable. While I do understand that glitches can occur in any type of online sales transaction, they simply need(ed) a better mechanism in place for dealing with mishaps on *their* end.

It also sucks when folks like us have to derail threads like this with "order/shipping horror stories" in order to seek out and get any results. So, my sincere apologies to all on that front.

Well, I made my order April 9, and have started sending emails every day since Saturday the 25 asking for... anything.

Still no reply.

If I placed an orer such as you did and KNEW my credit card had been charged, I'd either call my card company and dispute/cancel the charge ( and then chance a re-order)

Unfortunately, their 800 telephone number, "we'll take a message and get back to you in one day" routine is useless as well. At least it was in my case. Twice. So, if all avenues of communication are exhausted to no avail, a CC dispute would indeed probably be the only way. FWIW, I also called the general help line at WTTW...who simply gave me the 800 number again!

As noted before, for me, the *only* response I finally got was when I e-mailed "Elizabeth" at WTTW, who then forwarded my message to Questar. After apologetically acknowledging that they neglected to see/fill my order at all (even though my CC was charged immediately as well...way back on 4/10), they said they would finally be shipping it out on 4/22 ,and that it should take 3-7 days [note: I believe I incorrectly wrote "3-10 days" in a previous post].

As of today, seven days later, I still haven't received it. So, I'm really hoping it arrives in the next day or two (I live in Cleveland). I think I've watched that YouTube clip of "Wild Honey" on my Smart TV about 30 times already as a temporary salve...lol.

The ironic, double whammy part is that they charged $10.95 for S&H.

Quick update for anyone who's been following my trials and tribulations with the Soundstage order, or for anyone else who might be having issues...

As a last resort, I e-mailed Elizabeth at the WTTW e-mail address today (thanks Bgas for that addy!) after previously using the order site contact form e-mail address and 800 phone number (twice!). She must've forwarded it to Questar because about an hour ago I finally received an e-mail from "Jonathan" there, stating that he would personally look into the situation.

And then, 5 minutes ago, I received a phone call from him stating that while, yes, my credit card was indeed automatically charged initially, they were having problems with their new order software, and, as a result, somehow, my order never was received for processing. He apologized emphatically, took my address down again, and told me it would go out in the mail tomorrow (fingers crossed). Bottom line: Good thing I stayed on this, or I would've been waiting for nothing.

So, if you have problems...keep on it.

Still no delivery today. I also put in another call yesterday to that 800 number, where a CSR again took my info down and promised someone would get back to me. That hasn't happened yet either. That's two calls and an e-mail with no reply for anyone keeping score.

If I don't receive it by Monday, I'm calling my bank to dispute the charge. In light of never receiving the original order receipt like everyone else did, all I want is some kind of confirmation that my order was indeed received, beyond the immediate auto charge. Too much to ask?

Here's my own take on things. Not necessarily any sort of absolute truth but just one more perspective.

Do I think that there's some digital pitch correction on the new album? Yes. While my personal experience with the Antares plug-in was only fleeting, I think I have a pretty good grasp of what the "artificial steps quality" of that tuning process sounds like, even in light stages. Perhaps ironically, I hear it most on the Musgraves (great track IMHO, btw!) and some of the other guest vocals with their respective tracks. I also hear it in occasional spots on both Al and Brian's vocals. I wouldn't be surprised if the individual elements of the backing vocals were treated to it as well in places. Beyond that, there's probably a slew of other effects and plug-ins being used as well. Along with comp'd vocals, punch-ins, layered-lines, multiple takes and all the other stuff that makes record production so fascinating.

That said, I'm not really sure why this should be a shock to anyone...or even a dealbreaker. TunaAuto is pretty much the way-of-life in terms of the tools that contribute to the sheen of modern pop and country records  -- albeit perhaps an un-organic one to some. We also know that Joe Thomas has never shied away from it in the past, and even though Bob Clearmountain gets the chief mixing credit here, there's a whole bunch of other people credited as well (including JT). In this digital, unlimited virtual track recording age, it, along with other effects, could've been applied at any stage......and probably undone just as easily if need be. And while there's things about the overall production of the album that I'm not always overly fond of, I can't really just single that part out.

Also, count me in as someone who probably actually prefers to hear Brian's somewhat pitch-challenged, "modern" voice treated to a *bit* of this (though, in the case of the C50 live album, I think it was not implemented very well there). This isn't simply some new trend, and while the actual tools and technology were different, they've been doing it to his voice for decades. As an example, they dumped his voice into a sampler (Synclavier, Fairlight, etc.) during Orange Crate Art and pitch-corrected it using the pitch wheel.

IIRC, Mark Linett also mentioned "tuning the odd vocal note here and there" in a Mix interview regarding the Gershwin album (and it's definitely audible on "The Like In I Love You' on some notes/phrases).

So, I'm not sure it should be considered "disparaging" to point this out. It's a tool like anything else, and while I get that some people don't like it, it's nothing really unique these days. Good singers, bad singers....and everything/everyone in between.....even individual instruments occasionally....seem to be fair game.

And without any sort of confirmation on my end with the specifics of what I actually ordered or where to ship it  -- the autographed combo in my case as well -- I'm not positive that they have. That is, I just want to make sure that I don't slip through the cracks on the order fulfillment end of things. Unfortunately, and even though my CC was also automatically charged, that *has* happened to me in the past with another, unrelated company [And, in that case, by the time I pointed out to them that my CC was charged, they apologetically told me they were out of what was a limited edition item. For whatever reason, the order fulfillment department apparently had no specific record of my order and weren't even aware of the automatic CC charge.].

Not saying that's gonna happen this time, but the fact that some people got order e-mail conformation of their placed orders, however basic, while others didn't.....does concern me a bit. Hopefully, it's just a glitch in their software. On the other hand, the lack of communication following several inquiries kind of sucks.

Definitely all valid points. I can only hope that the longer the website is up and taking orders, and the more people place orders, the less likely it is that the whole thing is a big clusterfudge at least in terms of people getting what they ordered at some point.

Looks like a few of us bought this Blu-ray/ Cd combo.  They charged my bank account on the 9th, but I still have no shipping notice.  They won't answer the 3 e-mails I sent, and I've talked to them twice.  That 800- 633-5633 phone number is just a sales connection. 

Anybody heard from them?  I've never been charged before day of ship.

My CC was charged immediately. Yet, I never received an e-mail confirmation as it said I would when the order was placed. So, I thought I would send a quick message using the contact form just to confirm that my order was indeed received. No response. Then, I decided to give the phone number on the site a call for the same reason. Someone there took my "order inquiry" message down and said that they would forward it along, noting that someone from Questar would contact me. Again, no response. That was last Friday.

So, at this point, I guess it's just hope and wait. At the very least, all I'm looking  for is some sort of confirmation that my order was indeed received. Auto charges to credit cards, by themselves, don't exactly fill me with confidence. Order confirmation numbers do.

I don't really have a dog in this debate because: A) I am over 50, B) I do have a good deal of hearing loss and tinnitus, and C) My combative internet days are over (damn...lol!).  

But...there's really two separate issues at hand when one is discussing these so-called audiophile, high-resolution sites like HDtracks and Pono. Obviously, the whole "high-res benefits" thing is going to be debatable, but what's not is the fact that there are often significantly improved, often exclusive remasterings to be had there as well (at least perhaps until they find their way to CD). Namely for certain back catalog items. In some cases, the definitive ones, IMHO (e.g. *some* of the mid- late 70s Chicago titles, the Fleetwood Mac '75 album, Tusk, etc., etc.).

That said, just for giggles, I downsampled the new Brian title to 16/44, applied Replay Gain to level-match and then did a "blind" ABX test in Foobar against the corresponding (also 16/44) CD. And, I'll be damned if I could differentiate any difference in mastering between the two while casual listening in the 16/44 world. Thus, at least in this case, mastering shouldn't be much, if any of a variable (noting again: that, while serviceable, my own hearing isn't quite what it used to be).  

Actually **looking** at the waveforms seems to show a tiny bit of additional limiting in the standard version, and conversely, the aforementioned additional, albeit not-too-serious clipping issue in the other one. In general, the dynamic range of this album is nothing to write home about (i.e. it's pretty loud), though I do still think it's a pretty nice, full sounding record in absolute sonic terms.

It's also on HDTracks for $20.98.  Same quality as the Pono files.  Not sure if there is any other difference except for price.

In this particular case, I'd reckon it's most likely the same cross-platform mastering. A little bird managed to drop the 24/96k HDtracks FLACS into my possession when it was released there last Tuesday, so, at the very least, and "aural sniffing" aside, I can verify that there is actual spectral content of value in most (but not all....the Hollens track for example) of the tracks that extends beyond the Nyquist limit cutoff of the "normal" CD file: For the most part, it's authentic "hi-rez." Doing a quick, down and dirty analysis, that is. There's also some additional exceptions below that HDtracks lists in their footnote.

I should also add that, even if someone doesn't subscribe to the belief that any of this is audible to anyone other than dogs, there's some small historical value in that noted footnote over at HDtracks because it seems to suggest that the two original 24/48k exception tracks they list there, "Don't Worry" and "I'm Feeling Sad," may have a unique recording vintage or location (I'll assume the the 24/44.1k "Sebu" exception track already did, courtesy of the album liner notes). For example, I suppose a 48k sampling rate could suggest a DAT tape origin (16 bit native from older eras...of course) or maybe a home studio setup? Or...maybe not. "Don't Worry" does almost sound like it's from another era or setup. St. Charles, IL era and studio perhaps? All speculation of course. Anyone know for sure?

Also, somewhat strangely, the HDtracks files show more clipping than their respective standard CD files. Not a gross amount....but it's there.

One of the e-mail and/or website blurbs mentions the Blu-ray/DVD includes 27 songs. It appears 31 were performed at the live gig. We know at least two of the 27 will be the in-studio Deschanel tracks, and there probably be another non-live Musgraves track. So we might be looking at 24 of the 31 live show tracks being used.

When was this recording of ITBOMM done? Sounds like it falls somewhere in the adult child era, when his voice was making an impressive comeback from the gruff and pitchy Love You sound. He almost has some of his original sweetness in places.

FWIW, and for anyone keeping score, the bonus track version of "Love and Mercy" is indeed the same one that's on the 2005 "Walking Down The Path Of Life," Hurricane Katrina "single" release.

I now GUARANTEE "This Beautiful Day" has some connection to the "Life" suite.

I might just support that guarantee. Listening to the Amazon preview, the string bit there contains pretty much the exact same melody line as Summer's Gone during the latter song's  break. So, that's either one happy coincidence, one happy recycling, or else...

Always enjoy Beach Boys remasters but isn't this a bit of overkill?  Weren't most of these albums just re-released two years ago?  The SACD remastering should be nice, but there are only so many times I'm willing to repurchase the same album...

Beyond the formats themselves or any related inherent advantages, I think some are simply excited by the notion that someone *else* is doing the mastering besides ML. This isn't a dig at Mark, but, like anyone, his work is going to be seasoned with his own personal tastes and style -- EQ choices, gear, other processing/plug-ins, etc. And that may not always line up with a particular listener's tastes.


Here, again beyond the formats, we're just getting another sonic viewpoint for a rare change. Comparable to the situation with the Mo-Fi, Pet Sounds SACD release. If one is an audiophile, that in itself is fairly monumental in the Beach Boys world these days. I'm looking forward to hearing the results...at least what I can afford.

I would love to know the breakdown of each song -- when and where it was recorded...and I know someone once identified where the cover shot was from, but darned if I can remember.
