1  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Of Montreal, \ on: January 18, 2007, 08:46:07 AM
i dont see how saying "ooh the lyrics are dark" stops this being a sellout.
i *could* look at this album as Kevin releasing Satanic Panic as something different, and then all of a sudden people take notice. OM are no the longer Elephant 6 runts they were.
He then thinks "Ooh this is getting me noticed. I'll do this instead" and makes Sunlandic Twins and now Hissing Fauna.
OK so OM are never gonna be huge, but there are plenty of people all over the internet jupping on board from Satanic Panic onwards who have just dismissed the earlier albums almost as if they're by another band.

on the other hand, i *could* think well maybe Kevin has gotten into 80s music and is making different music as a result.
and if thats the case then good luck to him. its not my cup of tea, but i wouldnt begrudge him.

as yet, i dont know which view i hold. i'm coming down on the 2nd view, but there's something so forced about OM's new image. have you seen their new website?
2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Of Montreal, \ on: January 17, 2007, 06:31:21 AM
oh yeah, OM has always been Kevin's baby.
even so, Gay Parade, Ccquelicot and Aldhil's were still "band" efforts in that there's no way they can be considered to be a Kevin Barnes solo project with him playing everything. OM band members' contributions were just as important.
Here's what Kevin said about Satanic Panic before its release on his message board:  "it has turned out to be more of a solo album with people helping out here and there", which implies that he considered this to be a different album to the ones before it if he's calling it a "solo" album.

i just wonder why he hasnt picked up the band again? or maybe they dont want to be involved? who knows.......

3  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Of Montreal, \ on: January 16, 2007, 03:03:53 AM
i got into Of Montreal with Gay Parade and like them up to Satanic Panic, which was the album i though Aldhil's should have been.
but i got the impression from what people were saying that this new kevin barnes' "solo" version of Of Montreal was just a stop gap until a proper fully fledged OM album came out.
and then Sunlandic Twins came out, which i hated. i can appreciate that its a different style to the older stuff, but it just sounded so half arsed and empty and unfinished.
so whats Hissing Fauna like compared to these last two albums? is it just Sunlandic part 2, or is it more developed than that?
4  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The early Beatles in Liverpool on: November 30, 2006, 08:48:32 AM
heh, one thing about liverpool and the beatles is that there are about 100 small business all listing themselves as "....of Penny Lane", and none of them are on Penny Lane!

5  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The early Beatles in Liverpool on: November 29, 2006, 02:27:02 AM
the dingle isnt the same as toxteth.
are they?
they're still distinct places today.

i had a friend who was convinced he lived in the street where George use to live. though he couldnt explain why there were never any tourists.
he lived in Albert Grove.
he was a big fat liar!
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Wonderwall Music on: October 02, 2006, 08:45:07 AM
came out sometime in 1968 i think.

i like pretty much every song on this album, but it doesnt really stand up that well as an album simply because it was intended for a soundtrack and not to be listened to as an album.
there's some pretty freaky stuff on it!
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Mr. Tambourine Man or Rubber Soul on: July 21, 2006, 04:50:52 AM
rubber soul.

as good as some of Mr Tambourine Man is, they were not quite there yet.
8  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Nick Drake on: July 20, 2006, 06:37:22 AM
yep, there were 'scurrilous rumours' about Drake and Boyd.

really?!
tell me more about these rumours!
9  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Nick Drake on: July 20, 2006, 01:29:58 AM
Joe  Boyd's book "White Bicycles" absolutely gushes about nick drake.
not a fan myself, but if you like Nick Drake, Boyd's book is pretty good.
personally, i think Boyd gushes too much about Drake, but then i guess he has the right to.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: My threads that never caught on. on: June 07, 2006, 01:50:46 AM
might have to get me some high watermarks then.

cant wait for the next proper OM album - i cant see them doing the same thing as their last 2 albums because they've never stood still for that long, so who know what we'll get.

if you want to check out Elf Power, search for them on You Tube and it will bring up their All The World Is Waiting (and others) from their new album.
i love that song and i love the video. i love the song even more after seeing the video. its great.
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: My threads that never caught on. on: June 06, 2006, 08:57:06 AM
well if you like Olivia Tremor Control you definately need Circulatory System.
its more or less OTC without Bill Doss, so without the poppier songs.
in effect, you could look at it as the third OTC album.
its pretty dark and not that easy to get into, but its a definate must.
Bill Doss is the Sunshine Fix now, but that's not quite so good.

and then there's Elf Power.
anything by them is worth getting (except Walking With The Beggar Boys which is more mainstream indie-rock).
all their albums are pretty different but as you seem to like most E6 stuff you've heard you'll probably like them.

those would have to be your next purchases.
of the "lesser" E6 band's i'd track down Beulah's When Your Heartstrings Break and the Essex Green's Everything Is Green.

I've not heard High Water Marks - what are they like? i love hilary's songs and i think they feature Oranger's ex-drummer.
Oranger used to be really good but i had the misfortune to buy their latest album on saturday. oh dear. it is bad.

12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: My threads that never caught on. on: June 06, 2006, 08:00:36 AM
someone sent a sampler through to me which had OM's Summer In Oslo (or something like that?) and i thought i'd give it another go. but no, i still hated it.
granted that style of music's really not my cup of tea, but it just sounds lazy when compared to what they (he?) can do.

Cosmic Dancer - did you ever check Strawberryfire against Mrs O'Leary's Cow?

and have you got elf power's latest?
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: My threads that never caught on. on: June 06, 2006, 06:05:56 AM
i bought a copy of cherry peel when i saw them live a couple of years ago, but i dunno which version i've got.
apparently there are two versions, one where the band went back to do some overdubs.

of montreal's last album was horrible though.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who Did Psychadelia Better? on: June 01, 2006, 08:43:14 AM
The Beatles defined psychedelia forever with Tomorrow Never Knows...which was recorded in 1965!! There is nothing trippier or earlier in mainstream LSD rock. .

woah there buckaroo!
Eight Miles High December 65.
Sunshine Superman December 65.
Grim Reaper Of Love - um....earlier?

all before Tomorrow Never Knows.

i just had to edit this cos i forgot to mention The Incredible String Band.
Come on! you know its freakier that anything anyone else ever managed or imagined.
no studio trickery, just two insanse scottish folkies with wierd instruments and weird ideas.
you know you want some string band magic!

15  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Jesus and Mary Chain on: May 08, 2006, 01:28:42 AM
my favourite JAMC songs are some of their b-side around 94/95.
blah-de-blah, oh dear i sound like a snob, but the I Hate Rock N Roll single and its b-sides and the b-sides to Come On are really great.
They carry on the sound of Stoned And Dethroned but with the noise back.
16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: May 05, 2006, 02:12:07 AM

don't get me wrong, i think NMH is good.  and the guy could very well be a poet.  but i'd take a songwriter over a poet anyday.  i just never got poetry.  but i can get all along the watchtower.

heh, thats exactly how i feel about bob dylan.
he can write good lyrics but he aint no musician/singer.
well each to their own.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson was HANDSOME. on: May 04, 2006, 02:21:59 AM
I always thought they looked kind of unhealthy on this UK tour. Too much touring, traveling, and bad food through '66. This is one of the few times you'll see Dennis Wilson looking pale.

dennis wilson pale during the UK tour? 'course he was! its the UK!
it rains a lot and is cloudy. we're generally very pale over here, dont you know!
18  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: May 04, 2006, 01:44:35 AM
why do the lyrics have to be real?

me personally, i dont even care about lyrics. as long as theyre not cringe inducingly bad i pretty much dont pay attention to the lyrics of any band i like.

but saying lyrics have to be real is like saying oyu should only watch documentaries or watch factual films.
films are about fantasy and escapism.
music can be too.
19  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: April 25, 2006, 08:16:21 AM
its the elephant 6 townhall - www.e6townhall.com
its not that good though, mostly a bunch of adolescent halfwits trying to be surreal.
i think it used to be quite good a few years back, but i guess its still the place to get info and quite a few band members post there.

this place is pretty good for e6 stuff: http://elephantsix.blogspot.com/
loads of interesting things on that site, with loads of intersting downloads.
20  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: April 25, 2006, 06:49:41 AM
i never heard the mrs o'leary's cow thing either until someone pointed it out to me.

but listen to the bass line. its the same.
and the violins of mrs o'learys that slide up and down - theyre there too!
once you notice you wont belive how you missed it.

edit.
i've never heard Yoko  as i've not heard good things about it.
but if you can find When Your Heartstrings Break, grab it! its an absolute gem.
The Coast Is Never Clear is not quite so good. i couldnt tell you why, as each song is really good, but theres something thats not quite as good about it. still worth tracking down though.
never heard their 1st album.

and another edit.
i just rememberd a while ago over on an E6 board talking to Hilary from the Apples about Her Wallpaper Reverie, and she confirmed there's quite a bit of Smile influence on that EP. Les Amants sounds like Mrs O'Leary's Cow too. and all the little piano variations are all like Bicycle Rider Themes.
21  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: April 25, 2006, 01:25:08 AM
which is Mangum's verse on I Have Been Floated?

after Cubist Castle, i think Of Montreal are the most interesting band of E6 simply because they havent folded and are constantly evolving.
but i think i prefer Elf Power more. theyre a bit more low key so they always seem to be in the background, but i think Creatures is one of the best E6 albums. hated it at first because it was so low key but its such a grower.
then came Walking With THe Beggar Boys which was a horrible album, but one of their new songs up on their myspace site is as good as anything else theyve done.

cosmic dancer - i used to see strawberryfire as some beatles rip off until someone pointed out the similarities to Mrs O'Leary's Cow so now its a beatles and beach boys tribute (rip off?) all in one.
22  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Neutral Milk Hotel on: April 21, 2006, 02:09:30 AM
i wish i liked this album more.

im a massive E6 fan, but this album just doesnt connect with me the way it does with other people.
dont get me wrong i like the album a lot, but sooooooooooooo many people seem to think that Oh Comely is the greatest thing sinced sliced bread.
its just some bloke harping away at an acousitc guitar.
its nothing really special.
if youre gonna be all acousticy, you should be more like the incredible string band.
but then thats just my opinion.

but on saying that, Ghost and the following instrumental tracks are two of the greatest musical moments ever recorded.

oh, and i wouldnt say that Of Montreal are loosely affiliated with E6 - have a look af who's on The Gay Parade. everyone's there.
23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Underrated Beatles Songs on: March 07, 2006, 08:37:05 AM
its all too much - thats great 1967 psyche there.
within you without you - more peple seem to dislike that than like it.
long long long - hmmm....another george song.
piggies - again, more people dislike it than like it

um....yes, so i think george is the underrated one.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Elephant 6 on: March 03, 2006, 01:44:41 AM
Jeff Mangum dont sound west country!
im west country!
he aint no bumpkin!
25  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Elephant 6 on: March 02, 2006, 01:11:12 AM
i like that NMH album, but it doesnt do that much for me.
its just a good album, not a special album.
to me, that is.

Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal are probably my favourites.
Dusk At Cubist Castle (OTC) is probably the best E6 album.

Elf Power are pretty good too, but their last album was pretty appalling.
