This would be good if I could listen to this in the PM tonight. Ha.

I've thought about this. It won't happen. You really think Brian's people will let this happen. Sure Melinda was around for the country thing...but I think shes learned her lessons and the only way a reunion even happens is if the make The Beach Boys look like the important group they are, and not money-grubbing Lady Gaga collaborators, which, yes, some of them probably want to be. Ha.

Btw, did Brian really record a new version of this in the mid 70s? I think the Badman book says as much, but I dont see anything on AGD's site about it. Is it making the rounds? Whats the deal?
3054  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nooooooooo!!! on: August 02, 2010, 07:24:28 AM
Ok well heres my idea.

If Mike wants to have his way, well at least they should do it artistically, so instead of having Justin Timbaland and Katy Gaga, how about they call in Panda Bear, The Shins, Caribou, and a bunch of the other Beach Boys inspired acts and have them remix/reinterpret the Boys, that are actually creatively stimulating. I'm sure Moneybags Mike won't find it commercial enough, but I'd put money on this selling more than Mike singing with Justin. I'm pretty sure none of those guys would wanna cover "Kokomo" though. Closest they'd wanna get to the self proclaimed Dr. Love would probably be "All I Wanna Do". Honestly, I could do without this, but this would make the best of a bad situation.

Secondly, they have another hits CD, except this time, add like 2-3 new tracks, one Wilson/Love track, and maybe one Wilson/Bennett track. And knock out garbage like "Come Go With Me" and "Getcha Back" this time.

Then, most importantly, lets get those rarities out there. Some Capitol stuff, but hopefully a lot of the best Brother work, such as WIBNTLA and California Feelin '74. And other good stuff.

If I am not mistaken, Debbie Keil was on this board about a year ago and she brought some light into the Kent-Stories, which were very interessting.
So I wouldn´t believe too much of what Kent wrote. Altough, I heard from an other source that Brian did not like one Song from the album, but Bruce - who was the producer by this time - decided to cut for the record.

Could be Oh Darlin where Bruce changed the tempo, could be "When girls get together", could be "Endless Harmony" as well. Who knows. Maybe we should ask Bruce about it?

Debbie Keil was on the board? Do we have any of that still on here. I'd like to see what she had to say about this era.

I do. So there you have it: can't please everyone.

Oho!

Matt Jardine would be a thousand times better for Brian's higher parts, anyway.

I'm sorry, but I just can't stand his voice. Dude absolutely ruins the BWPS versions of "Good Vibrations", too, and "Wonderful" isn't so good because of it, either.

Hey runners your buddy sweetdudejim from a6 here....sorry if i'm alittle off but whos voice are you talking about Jeff Foskett or BW?. Honestly I never even think of him on either track. I know of course he's like doubling Brian of something on "Wonderful," but honestly that is THE standard version of that song to me whereas The Beach Boys versions of Heroes, Surfs Up and Good Vibes are all still the real deal for me. However, Darian on H&V with thoe 'do-yous' or whatever it is drives me nuts.

Another thing, somewhat off topic, but since we kinda drifted towards BWPS...does anybody think "Roll Plymouth Rock" just doesnt sound as creepy as the original? I mean, I suppose you can say that of all the sessions, but I still hear that "ghostly" quality on things like "Child", "Cabin Essence" and even "Surf's Up" from BWPS. Just "RPR" seems to be more bright and happy, than the weird and psychedlic way i first heard on the box set years ago.

Speaking of this article, what is the deal with "Boys and Girls" or whatever it is? Is there a finished recording in the vaults? Or is there a Brian demo out there. I've heard it talked up sometimes as a good song. Anybody got any info on it? When it was recorded, who was involved, leads, producers?

Recorded October 19th 1979 and November 18th the following year, both times at Western.

Was it finished? Have our beloved vault combers found it. And who did the lead? Brian i presume?

Anyways, I think that the Boys should have done an album in '81 or '82 with all the little gems Brian was writing around this period. There were quite a few little things that he was working on that could have been pretty commercial (if polished up) and pretty interesting artistically. You could have had an album with cuts like "Boys and Girls", "Sweetie", "Stevie", "I'm Begging You Please" and maybe "California Feelin'" from Brian, maybe "Why Don't They Let Us Fall in Love" and "Be My Baby" from those Brian/Mike sessions (hopefully sparing us LBWL in the process), "Heaven" from Carl (sparing us his debut), and maybe a few choice cuts from Bambu. Could have been a decently strong album. If only...

But wait, so when is the officially released "Ding Dang" from? The Love You sessions?
3060  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Wikipedia and other sources.... on: July 27, 2010, 05:38:34 PM
Alright, so I've been reading a few things recently, and I brought some up before to no avail, so maybe we'll find out this time.

First, I noticed on the BB wikipedia page for "Hey Little Tomboy" was "written for an untitled project in 1974"? Where the hell did anybody get that info? I've never heard anything of the sort (and yes, thats the question I asked before).

The last 2 are for AGD. I noticed in the "Ding Dang" section in your book, it says it was recorded in 1973? Does that just mean the backing track or the vocals and the whole deal? Cuz in '74 they did the "other" version of it. I always took "Ding Dang" to be something he worked on for a while, but never got the released version recorded until the Love You Sessions. I could be totally wrong though.

And then lastly for Andrew, I noticed your page says the "Winter Symphony" track was recorded in 1974. Is that true? Its not listed on the "shows and sessions" section, but I'm sure theres a few things here and there we don't know for sure. Do you have any idea when this may have been done, or for what purpose?

Anyways Andrew, I thank you for your work, and I just wanted to clarify.

-(Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again (Dennis '74)

Surf's Up outtake, so 1971 would be more accurate. But I agree: nr 1 on my compilation list

Why did I put '74? I thought I typed '71, and alas, I didn't. Thanks for pointing that out.
3062  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: State of the surviving voices on: July 26, 2010, 11:21:14 PM
It's insane to even comprehend. I think his solo albums defnitely would have made more of a mainstream impact. And the public apparently loves that classic Brain vocal sound too. They ate "Getcha BacK' right up, which besides an unnamed soundtrack cut, is their last hit. And before that "Good Timin", which is just so BW, despite the fact he only played and didnt sing on it.

But at the same time, I dont think he would have sounded like young Brian today. I honestly think even if he kept his voice safe all that time, he probably wouldnt ended up sounding basically like this. McCartney sounds "huskier" these days too. And honestly, his 80s voice was pretty decent, and if he didn't YELL all over BW88 I think "L&M" and "Melt Away" would have made more impact. I think his mid-range was still good in the 80's but him using his loud voice on those songs, would be like him using his "H&V" voice on "Surf's Up". It just doesnt fit.

However, by Imagination he started sounding like an old man, regardless of smoking or what have you.I just think it was him getting older. But his voice on BWRG does sound sweeter than it has in a while. And hes using the voice the right way unlike BW88.

Sorry for the rambling, but this topic gets me going.
3063  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your ideal compilation of the next archival release on: July 26, 2010, 09:46:39 PM
Ok, I'm just gonna go with unreleased tracks, and try to make a nice comp....here goes nothin:

-California Feelin' (Brian '74)
-Where Is She (Brian '69)
-(Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again (Dennis '71)
-You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling (Brian '76)
-Burlesque (Brian? '72)
-Carry Me Home (Dennis, Blondie '72)
-Sweetie (Brian, Mike, Al '81)
-Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love (Mike '81)
-You're Still A Mystery (Brian, Mike '95)
-Game of Love (Mike '67)
-Baby I Need Your Lovin'/Gimme Some Lovin' (Brian, D. Sandler '73)

*Singers and recording year to the best of my knowledge in parethesis.

I'm sure if this was put out, there would have to be more of a Mike, Al, and possibly Carl presence, so we'd probably end up with some random Mike solo song, and some Al song that was started 35 years ago. I just hope that if they do indeed do an archive release, they include the '74 California Feelin', (WIBN)TLA, Where Is She?, and Burlesque, since for the first 3 I've heard great reviews from AGD and the like....and for the last by Mr. Jack Reilly, who made "Burlesque" sound quite intriguing, especailly considering it was during the C&TP era.
3064  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: State of the surviving voices on: July 26, 2010, 07:17:38 PM
I hate to bring this up, but I'm still wondering if he actually "destroyed" his voice. I have the hunch he could sing like Holland-era or "Rollin' Up To Heaven" on 15BO and Love You. Just my opinion.

And honestly, he sounds like nearly the same guy on "Please Let Me Wonder", "God Only Knows" (yes I know Carl did the released lead), and things like the bridges to "Surfer Girl" and "In My Room". And I'm not the kindest to judge his vocals. I think the '04 "Surf's Up" left a bit to be desired, especially in the phrasing.
3065  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce as Producer on: July 26, 2010, 05:04:24 PM
I'm not sure cuz I  dont have it anymore, but i'm pretty sure BW was credited as a musician on  the LA section of the MIU/LA reissue.

A question of mine, is why didnt CBS complain when the album wasn't 75 percent Brian of whatever...wasn't that in the contract?
3066  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Group on Endless Summer Cover on: July 24, 2010, 11:33:43 PM
I Know this is a stupid question, but I just need the answer, its bugged me for a while? Who are the faces on Endless Summer "officially" supposed to be. Maybe this question has been answered on here before, but i dont know. Anyways, heres my best guess:

Front Cover
First: Brian
Next: Mike?
Far Right: Al

Back Cover
Left: Dennis
Right: Carl

I have no idea. Honestly, the guy that I think might be Dennis somewhat looks like Ricky Fataar to me. Is it possible he "made it onto" the cover? Who knows?
3067  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: July 24, 2010, 08:21:46 PM
he does sound positively insane on this. and its crazy to think he  sounded how he did in like 1970 compared to this. Chapel of Love sounds glorious compared to this. I'm still awaiting the Lucy Jones voice to add to this list of odd voices Brian throws out there.
3068  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Revisiting GIOMH on: July 24, 2010, 03:10:30 PM
What about the genesis has bothered you AGD? I know I've heard bits here and there, such as Brian apparetly not wanting "Soul Searchin" on the album. But what else is there?
3069  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: July 24, 2010, 03:02:51 PM
Yes, I'd be Pretty Much happy if I could hear it one day too.
3070  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alan speaks... again. on: July 22, 2010, 10:29:35 PM
The thing I get out of all this is just how unprofessional these guys are all coming off as.  With the exception of Brian, who I think is coming off as more professional probably because most of his stuff is filtered through a handler or something.  No offense intended, just saying that he's a special case and has people around him who handle things, lol.

Mike, Al, even Bruce on the other hand are in an interesting position.  Here are three guys who are still referred to as Beach BOYS... I mean it's kind of their job to still be in High School.  They HAVE to stay in High School, that's what everybody wants from them.  Nobody wants to hear Mike Love sing songs about growing old and reminiscing on his life working at the automobile factory or whatever, they want to hear him sing about how he has a hot rod and he can drive faster than everybody else and blah blah blah.

So you've got a handful of Rock Stars here who never had to grow up, at least professionally.  When you talk to them about business, business is all about how they felt when they were 18.  So they handle things immaturely and unprofessionally... they ruin promotion plans, they spill secrets that millions of dollars hinge on, etc. because they've never had to be professionally mature.

Ironically, Brian who is likely the most immature of them all, comes off as an intelligent, professional, serious composer largely because he's SO immature that over the years he's had conservators appointed who handle his business dealings!

The whole thing is really interesting.  I love all these guys though, it's always fun to see what's next.

That post was basically genius, especially the point about Brian looking like the most mature due to him having to go through that filter. Because without it, we would probably probably hear the same kinda stuff from him, just like Al and Mike.
3071  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian: \ on: July 22, 2010, 05:08:08 PM
It really is a horrible song. I cant believe it was written/recorded durin gthe SUnflower era, considering all the other gems Brian has from around that time. It even makes most of KTSA look good.
3072  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: July 22, 2010, 03:45:07 PM
I don't believe he really sounds like he nearly screaming in that one part. I've had time to think about it, and my wonder is why were nearly all of his vocals on BW88 "yelled"? I mean, yeah he sang like that back in the day too, on stuff like "You're So Good to Me" and "Heroes & Villains", etc. But BW88, it just doesnt fit on every song, some it does. But stuff like "Love and Mercy" and "Melt Away" may have benefitted from a little more finesse.

Btw, has Brian ever spoken about the drastic change in his between Holland and 15 Big Ones? I wonder was his reasoning/explanation was for it.
3073  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian: on: July 21, 2010, 01:49:20 AM
Nick Kent was a piece of merda. He wrote nothing but tabloid garbage....he was Lester Bangs after a lobotomy.

Nick was certainly an interesting case - used stuff from old articles as his own, managed to rub people up the wrong way and yes, some of his writing was cruel.

But...

His 1975 NME 3-parter reignited a small spark of interest in Brian over here and, of course, precipitated my headlong plunge into the Wacky World of Wilson. Jury's still out on whether that's a plus or a minus.  Roll Eyes

Andrew, I was looking into getting that back, "The Dark Stuff" which apparently includes the NME article(s). Is it worth it? Also, back to the orignal question, does anybody know that the "hated" song in question was?
3074  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian: "I hate that song!" on: July 20, 2010, 05:03:13 PM
I was recently thumbing through the Back to the Beach interview compilation book, and I read that Nick Kent interview where Kent mentions a song off of KTSA and Brian goes off on how much he hates it. What was that song btw. I think I've seen the answer before, and I'm assuming it was "When Girls Get Together", since the rest we're (then) either recently written by BW or had nothing to do with him (Bruce and Carls songs).

For the record btw, I think that article was a horrible and unfair portrayal of Brian. I'm not a Bloo-type and I'm very skeptical of anything Brian has done since BB85 but this guy seemed to be out to make him just look pathetic.
3075  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: July 19, 2010, 12:08:16 PM
So I'd say I'm a pretty knowlegable fan, but what would you guys say are the top Brian falsetto's post '74-mid 80's and then post "Getcha Back". In the first case I'd probably say "You've Lost that Loving Feeling". And in the post "Getcha Back" category, I really don't know, was there some on "Melt Away"? "Daddy's Little Girl" was horrendous. What else did he do falsetto on lately?
