1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love just announced a "Good Vibrations" Cruise on: October 07, 2021, 01:11:51 PM
So Mike just announced a "Good Vibrations" cruise with what's left of the Monkees. Yahoo News does a great job of asking some questions - (i.e. 60 anniversary tour and so on). I am not a Mike hater but man he makes it hard to like him.... see below....

I just got my tickets for DC. I've seen Brian a bunch of times but its been a while, maybe the 50th with the boys and he's getting up there and I need to see him at least one more time. I couldn't be more excited!! (And Al and Blondie too!!)

Its a little cheesy but its kinda cool too. I would love a message from Mike! He's still a Beach Boy and a great singer.

I am not a Mike hater but damn. I cannot support this. I signed. Thanks Brian and Al.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could go any Beach Boy concert in history on: October 18, 2019, 06:13:00 AM
I would have to say anything in 1964 with Brian and that voice

The show where they played with the Dead and they blew the crowd away

And anything in 1972. (I've seen all the boys live except Dennis so that's a must!)

I hope he comes to Minneapolis. I think this time I am going to break down and do the Meet and Greet.

I believe I read he was trying to sound like Billy Joel who was big at the time
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds-ish Songs by Brian & Other BBs on: October 19, 2018, 12:50:09 PM
This would be a great playlist or Brian Wilson "greatest hits"

I might add, I went to sleep, Time to get alone, Sail on Sailor, Busy Doin' Nothing

16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What’s the best Frank Sinatra album? on: January 25, 2018, 12:41:42 PM
Most of his Capital output is essential including:

Songs for Swinging Lovers
In the wee small hours
Where are you?
Come fly with me
Only the lonely
Nice N Easy
No one Cares

and on reprise

September of my years
Sinatra and Strings
Jobim

And actually many more....

one thing about mike love - his tributes are almost always heartfelt and really really moving
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My First BB Concert/Your First BB Concert on: July 21, 2017, 12:26:09 PM

The Beach Boys (with Carl) 4 times in the mid/late 1980's when I was in high school

Brian - Solo tour 2000, Smile (in London) and Minneapolis

The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour

Smile and 50th were my favorite..... but seeing Brian that first time was transcendent ....
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Top 5 Favorite Songs on: June 20, 2017, 09:24:32 AM
Surf's Up
Til I Die
Good Vibrations
A young man is gone (live one from '66)
Wouldn't it be nice?

Not sure this is appropriate either....
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which BB songs could have been released incognito as being from another band? on: April 18, 2017, 02:07:54 PM
I think Slip on Through could have been a hit under a different name - it's cool, progressive sounding and not very "Beach Boy-ish" even with the background vocals.

Gettin' Hungry feels like it could have been a hit - it feels like a weird summer of 67-68 type hit, same Wild Honey.

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Looking back on Brian's best studio recordings of the last decade on: March 22, 2017, 01:19:36 PM
----------------------I think Melt Away and Rio Grande are as good as anything on Pet Sounds, so are From There To Back Again and Summer's Gone, those might even reach Smile.

I would almost add in Think About The Days, but the piano turns me off, it is as simple as it is, there nothing that screams Brian about it, you just can tell right away Joe came up with it and nothing was changed to it, which is a shame, nice melody and harmonies tho.-------------------------

I agree with both of these sentiments 100%! And BB** is still my favorite album of his. The songs are just top notch
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why no new album in 1975? on: March 22, 2017, 08:26:29 AM
I agree - Rock and Roll Music SOUNDS like a Beach Boys - a classic beach Boys hit. (I don't get the hate - I like it and it sounds great - great Mike vocal, fun background vocals) and it has more punch than It's O.K.   Sure a better album would have helped them but they do blow it pretty consistently.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did the beach boys get the shaft when it came to chart positions? on: January 18, 2017, 01:45:06 PM
Maybe a little - I always felt like Surfin' USA and California Girls and Fun, Fun, Fun should have been #1 hits
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike is kind of playing the inauguration.... on: January 17, 2017, 01:44:17 PM
It's a compromise I can live with....
