Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Scott Totten and John Cowsill depart Beach Boys band

From Scott via FB: A NEW CHAPTER Well friends after nearly 23 years I have performed my last shows with The Beach Boys. It has been a dream come true for me to play those amazing songs night after night, year after year for all the great fans out there. I’m very proud of the work I did to honor the musical legacy of The Beach Boys – with the help of my bandmates Brian Eichenberger, Tim Bonhomme, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago, Christian Love and especially John Cowsill. Also the great BB crew - Swifty, Tara Ricart, Mike Czaszwicz, John Bracken and Adam Richter. I want to thank Mike Love and Jacquelyne Love for the many opportunities and experiences my family and I have had during my tenure. Many of you don’t know that I actually started touring in 1993 with the show TOMMY, so after 30 years I’m looking forward to being a bigger part of my family’s lives, and for my next adventure, big or small. I hope we cross paths again. Mike Love: Our live show and band family was blessed by both Scott & John’s contributions for 23 years. Change is a part of life despite being difficult to accept. Although Scott and John may not tour regularly with us, they will always be my family, my brothers in music and great friends in life. This is not goodbye, just see you soon 🙏 My Love & gratitude to Scott & John and best wishes for a fantastic next chapter. Peace & Love, Mike & Jacquelyne ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I haven't seen any statement from John and only learned of his departure through Mike's message.

I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The band they put together for the event was very good, and it was very cool to have Jason Falkner and Roger Manning on the same stage playing Beach Boys songs. Watch it if you can.
Should I know who they are? Are you familiar with the band Jellyfish? Manning (keyboards) was a co-founder of the band. Falkner was their guitarist until 1991/92.

Keep 'em coming. While still in its infancy, I could see this kind of technology used to make unfinished parts of Smile a reality. Imagine hearing a dream cover by Dennis or Carl. Certainly Nothing will stop fans of any band from experimenting. In a few years that dream Beach Boys, Beatles, or Band reunion album could only be a few keystrokes away from happening.

My 5 CD box set arrived from ImportCDs today. A couple days earlier than I had expected. Now I need to rip FLACs of the discs so I can enjoy it at work.
A big Thank You! to Mark and Alan for fulfilling a wish I've had for 30 years.

Yes, Back Home, Love is a Woman and Good Vibrations. Brian is among the few SNL musical guests to do 3 songs rather than the standard 2. The rule of thumb seems to be if you have "legend" status, you get to do a 3rd song. Off the top of my head, Roy Orbison, McCartney, Springsteen and U2 have been in the 3 song club. I think I read somewhere that Coldplay is the only act to do a 4th song, but I don't think I saw that episode.
The Band performed four songs on the October 30th 1976 episode - Life Is A Carnival, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Town, Stage Fright, and Georgia On My Mind

I purchased a subscription last night, the new issue will arrive in 7-10 days! This LP has been a favorite since I first heard my used copy in 1989 or so. It's a good one to introduce people to their early 70s era. I purchased it after I had already owned Surf's Up and Holland for a few months.

Here's the poem:
Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes (1902-1967)
Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain Seeking a home where he himself is free.
(America never was America to me.)
Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed— Let it be that great strong land of love Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme That any man be crushed by one above.
(It never was America to me.)
O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe.
(There's never been equality for me, Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")
Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark? And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?
I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek— And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.
I am the young man, full of strength and hope, Tangled in that ancient endless chain Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need! Of work the men! Of take the pay! Of owning everything for one's own greed!
I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean— Hungry yet today despite the dream. Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers! I am the man who never got ahead, The poorest worker bartered through the years.
Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream In the Old World while still a serf of kings, Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true, That even yet its mighty daring sings In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned That's made America the land it has become. O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas In search of what I meant to be my home— For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore, And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea, And torn from Black Africa's strand I came To build a "homeland of the free."
The free?
Who said the free? Not me? Surely not me? The millions on relief today? The millions shot down when we strike? The millions who have nothing for our pay? For all the dreams we've dreamed And all the songs we've sung And all the hopes we've held And all the flags we've hung, The millions who have nothing for our pay— Except the dream that's almost dead today.
O, let America be America again— The land that never has been yet— And yet must be—the land where every man is free. The land that's mine—the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME— Who made America, Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain, Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, Must bring back our mighty dream again.
Sure, call me any ugly name you choose— The steel of freedom does not stain. From those who live like leeches on the people's lives, We must take back our land again, America!
O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath— America will be!
Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death, The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies, We, the people, must redeem The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain— All, all the stretch of these great green states— And make America again!
