My book 50 Sides of The Beach Boys will be out in Spring 2012 through ECW Press.

Myth: Brian sang God Only Knows on the outtake on the Pet Sounds Box Set.
Fact: It was a mistake, much like Brian singing Be Here In There Morning and that Daddy Dear song. Azn

Is this now the consensus re: the GOK outtake? I always thought it was Brian, but now I am not so sure.

Myth: Dennis had no musical talent
Fact: Dennis was a genius in his own right

Myth: Dennis abused substances pretty much from Charles Manson years to his death.
Fact: Dennis was clean from 1973 - 1976. Probably off and on from 1969 -1973 (?)
I agree with you regarding Dennis's talent, but what is your source that he was clean from 1973 to 1976? The very apparent deterioration of his voice over that period would seem to indicate otherwise.

Here's a recent quote from an NY Mag interview with Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie:

What do you listen to while you’re running?
Gibbard: That’s an awesome question. I made a long mix of stuff. During the marathon, I listened to this group from Seattle, Fresh Espresso. It’s this hip-hop group. It’s the worst name. But they have this song, “The Lazerbeams,” that I listened to literally twenty times for the first five miles of the marathon. [Sings “Laser Beams.”] But I make mixes for running: Beach Boys songs, “All I Wanna Do,” and then a Telekinesis song, and then Ministry’s “Burning Inside,” and then Public Enemy.

Also, this song is a favorite of Mike Kowalski, who lobbied for years to have the BBs play it live, but it never happened.

I totally agree! I remember this song made a lot of "15 Little Ones" lists recently. I really don't like the muddy mix on KTSA, but the Landlocked one is great. That sounds like a great Brian orchestral arrangement to me.

Actually the Beach Boys appeared on Stamos' short-lived sitcom with Jack Klugman in the mid-80's. Show was called You Again?.  Don't know if this was their first meeting.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCHPlAwBVZE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

You Again was 1986.  Stamos was actually with the group onstage (not sure if he guest drummed or not, although I do know that Mr. T DID) on July 4, 1985 in Philadelphia and Washington D.C.  This may have been his first appearance with the BB's, not sure. Also not sure why I know this...
According to Mike Love, that was indeed his first show with the band. Stamos' entree into the group was provided by Jeffrey Foskett, who was then playing with the BBs and had been Stamos' roommate.

Hi everyone. I'm wondering if the experts out there can help. For my book 50 Sides of The Beach Boys, I have spoken to Randy Bachman, who played many shows with the group as a member of the Guess Who, BTO and Ironhorse. I’m having a hard time with dates, however. He has memories of Eugene Landy traveling with Brian. He recalls it being on the tour with Ironhorse in 1979, but obviously Landy wasn’t around then. So it must've been either 1976 or 1983 and beyond. Does anybody know of Bachman opening for the boys in either of those two time frames?
Second point. He recalls being the opening act when there was a dustup between Mike and Dennis at the Greek Theater. That's in keeping with events we've heard about from July 17, 1981. But according to Eric A's great site, Iron Horse opened for the Boys at the Greek on June 23, 1979. Is it possible that venue repeatedly brought out the fisticuffs between those two guys? I'm wondering if anyone can confirm if Bachman was on that bill in 1981 as well.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Gigs & sessions

BTW, the 1979 gigs were at the Greek in Berkley (UC) while the 1981 shows were at the Greek in Hollywood.
Thanks for pointing that out, Andrew. Bachman definitely said it was at the Greek Theater in LA. So then I need to confirm that he was on that 1981 bill, if anyone knows. He also refers to an onstage incident between Dennis and Mike leading to whatever backstage fracas is said to have occurred. But there were no doubt plenty of those.

185  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do It Again Re-recording? on: July 20, 2011, 02:27:20 PM
Benig a Beach Boys fan...

The guys we are supposed to admire are recording for the first time in fifteen years (equal to the time span between Surfin' and 15 Big Ones, BTW)  and we're already hating it.

If it were new stuff, I would have high hopes. But re-recordings are one of the worst things you can do in music. No matter how good it may be as a recording, it's undercutting your own legacy. The Beach Boys went down that path too many times. They should know. On the other hand if there's something the Beach Boys are really constant in, then it's not learning from their own faults.
Again, here's hoping that Do It Again will be the only re-recording and just as the theme for the DIA-reunion-tour.
Besides the 2 songs on SIP, where else have "The Beach Boys" done this, or are you also referring to the NASCAR CD and the such?
How about Stars & Stripes Vol. 1?

Yeah, but when Rolling Stone does it, it will probably be like this...

Remember, I am talking how the bass sounds.  I'd say Fun Fun Fun,  I get Around to start.  Brian was great of course early on, especially when you hear the live material, i thought he and dennis rocked.
I guess you might have gathered that my point is, like you, many people assume they are hearing Wrecking Crew musicians on the tracks you chose when in fact the Beach Boys are playing 90% of the instruments on those two tracks. The bass on Fun Fun Fun and on I Get Around is Al Jardine and Ray Pohlman. Carol did play on a number of great BB's tracks, but no where near as many as well meaning fans like you might assume. Don't trust the conventional wisdom because when it comes to who played on BB's sessions new research has turned that conventional wisdom on its head.

Hal Blaine on drums on "Fun, Fun, Fun", right?

Yes, but it appears there's TWO drummers on the basic track, indicating Denny also drummed...Denny DEFINITELY added some more drumming to the overdubs.

Interesting. Thanks!

190  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian in Toronto - 6/18/11 on: June 20, 2011, 07:40:33 AM
I was a little bit apprehensive about the Toronto show, having read mixed reviews of earlier shows here, but was very pleasantly surprised. There was an enthusiastic crowd at Massey Hall – not sold out, but close – and I think Brian and the band fed off that. I thought the first half – Beach Boys classics and some lesser-known tracks like "Salt Lake City" and "Pet Sounds" –was very strong. Then he did the Gershwin stuff, and I thought it went over very well. The crowd was into it. Then the encores. First time I've seen him not close with "Love and Mercy". He ended on the more upbeat note of "All Summer Long". I thought Brian was in good form and a little more chatty the usual.

A couple of days earlier, he received the NxNE lifetime achievement award sponsored by Now magazine. That was pretty funny. There was a good crowd of media and fans for the awards ceremony. First, the arts editor of the magazine came on and said some nice things about Brian, followed by a video montage – which strangely featured a lot of footage from Brian's "dark years" – and generous song clips. Then Jim Cuddy from popular Toronto country rock band Blue Rodeo came on stage to introduce Brian. Cuddy talked about how when he was a kid it was all about the fun songs from The Beach Boys, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Then, when "Good Vibrations" came along it awoke his consciousness about how records were put together. After that he heard his sister's copy of Surf's Up and thought "Wow, somebody bummed out The Beach Boys!" So the stage was set, and he introduced Brian. Brian came onstage and appeared at ease. He went to the podium, thanked everyone in a few seconds and then said, "BYE!" He didn't even wait for Cuddy to hand him the award. He just grabbed it off the podium and left the stage as quickly as he could. No questions from the crowd, no onstage Q&A. Nothing. Some in the crowd thought he was kidding. But nope, that was it. It was quite hilarious. In all fairness, we were told we wouldn't have any "face time" with Brian, because he had to head to Montréal for a concert.

All in all, a memorable few days for Brian in Toronto.

191  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Opinons on what's false about what's written in WIBN: My Own Story on: June 11, 2011, 07:34:39 PM
Obviously it is written through the Landy filter, and obviously material was lifted from other books, but at the same time there seem to be anecdotes that could only have come from Brian – for example, when he dropped in on a Rolling Stones session. It's a story Brian still tells to this day.

I totally agree, PS. This is one of my favorite Beach Boys tracks EVER. At least as good as the A-side. Interesting historical note: according to AGD's book, some believe it announces Dennis' relief that he had distanced himself from Manson and his Family.

i just watched teh Brian interview on the George show. Wow that was interesting. Brian seemed to be quite engaged for the most part. There wa s a time when he was having trouble eliciting more than one word answers, but also got him to comment on Spector, Pacific Ocean Blue, Bach, Beethoven,Carl, Dennis, Murry and Mike. "....Denis was rude..."

Essential viewing!

Here is a clip, I am sure they will put up the entire interview at some point.

Some of the typical ground was covered, but you haven't heard too many interviewers lately ask Brian about Murry, let alone his thoughts about his own mortality. Nice to hear Brian sing a bit from "River Song".

Brian has been doing the media rounds here in Toronto to promote his upcoming Canadian tour. Sorry if this has already been posted, but here is his interview on the CBC Radio show Q from last week: http://www.cbc.ca/q/blog/2011/05/24/brian-wilson-clip/. There's a video clip as well as the entire radio interview. It's more in-depth than usual. This Friday, he will be on the CBC TV show George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. The episode will likely be archived here: http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/Shows/George_Stroumboulopoulos_Tonight. Enjoy.

Actually, here's the original thread:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,9405.0.html

Anyone know where that movie is in terms of production/release?

At The Beach Boys' show last month in Niagara Falls, when Mike was doing his usual ribbing of John Stamos, he started mentioning JS' involvement with the movie, but then cut himself short, saying "but I shouldn't be talking about that," which  leads one to believe something's going on. As for The Drummer, I have heard secondhand that it is mired in rewrite hell.

Can we get a sample of at least the titles/ideas for at least 10 sides?

Well, I can say that in keeping with the 50th anniversary theme, I will be looking at 50 songs. Of course, certain songs have to be included. But in some cases a song that may have been a hit is trumped by a song representative of a certain era or that has an interesting history all its own. Solo stuff will be included. The people commenting on the songs are either people directly involved with their creation or people who have been influenced/amazed by them. As for who is talking about what, I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise…
Would you say that you're mentioning at least one song per album? (just to cover all the "eras")

It's weird in BB-land, there's some songs that trump others...like I could see something like Good Timin' being trumped during the 79 era because it's not really representative of that era...(not that you can't use it for that era, just an example)....but other songs from that era, Baby Blue (which also enters into the Bambu area) or the not so popular Here Comes the Night, but is a good example of how the BB could have been perceived (when performing in concert).

You've hit on the head one of the biggest challenges I have faced. I have aspired to include at least one song per album so that all the historical eras are covered, but obviously there are several tracks off Pet Sounds and Smile, for example,  that people want to talk about, but off Summer in Paradise, not so much. It also depends on which tracks are most personal to my interviewees.

BTW I think this should be in the "honored guests"-board too, if Mark is gonna post more infos and maybe answer questions. Just a thought

BTW Mark, is it a collection of different interviews and books (I guess that's the only way for Dennis and Carl's thoughts) or did you do any new interviews yourself ?

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm happy to answer some questions, although I have to keep some things close to the vest for now. My book is ALL new interviews I have conducted. That's my hook, and hopefully it will bring out new information and different perspectives on the band.

There had been some mention of this last year in relation to a Brian Wilson feature I wrote for Maclean's, but now I can tell you officially. When you’re done enjoying Jon Stebbins' next book – I personally can't wait – you may want to check out my own book 50 Sides of The Beach Boys. It's being released in spring 2012 via ECW Press, the same guys who published Jon's Dennis Wilson book. In keeping with the band's 50th anniversary, I am telling the stories of its key songs through the perspective of band members, collaborators, fellow artists and notable scribes. I'll keep you updated.
