I loved it!  Smiley

No one thinks Island Fever sounds even a tiny bit like Kokomo?

Lahania Aloha is my favorite on that album mostly for Carl's vocals.

And Carl's vocals are one of the few things on that album that don't suck.

I think Island Fever sounds a teensy weensy almost can't hear it bit like Kokomo. OK?

Yes.   Grin

"I think maybe it's more of a backlash against classic artists doing cover albums of oldies (Hello Rod Stewart)"

If that is the case, then why was Rod Stewart nominated this year for doing that very same thing?

Fly Me To The Moon...The Great American Songbook Vol V....Rod Stewart

My bad LOL, didn't read the whole list.  There goes that theory :-(  Guess they didn't like the album then.

I suppose not. Maybe they weren't too keen on "Brianized' Gershwin. Or he just got overlooked. Regardless, I think it's a shame but not too suprising I guess, given their track record.

Before we get too uptight, has anyone listened to the albums that did get nominated?

No. And...

You can't force me to listen to Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow!  Grin

Been a fan since June of 64. All I can say is some things never change. Hey, at least Brian and the Boys have us diehards hangin in for almost half a century  LOL

I agree with that and with the sentiments expressed about the Grammy Awards in general.

Still... I can't help feeling somewhat disappointed.

It would have been nice to see Brian get some recognition for his fine work on BWRG.

After 50 years in the biz he has just one honorary Grammy (for being a member of the Beach Boys) and one for best instrumental (Fire) to show for it.
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Grammy Nomination(s)? on: December 02, 2010, 03:50:34 AM
You are correct.

Apparently the Grammy voters were less than impressed with BWRG.

No nominations of any kind.
I guess they didn't need to release it early here in the USA after all.
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So i guess the Beach Boys are getting more hip on: December 01, 2010, 11:41:07 AM
I gave up hope on modern music years ago. With the exception of the odd BB's related release (and some of those are purchased simply because I'm a completist) I don't own any modern music. I think the most contemporary album I own is from 1992!

Nothing in 18 years has struck your fancy enough to buy?

That's a long time. My daughter's entire lifetime.

112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Grammy Nomination(s)? on: December 01, 2010, 07:35:57 AM
I believe that the nominations for the Grammy Awards will be announced today. While I would like to believe that BWRG will be nominated for any of the major categories, in reality I don't see this happening.

However, there are a few other possible categories BWRG could be nominated for.

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Instrumental Performance (Plenty Of Nuttin') and possibly Best Jazz Vocal Album being the most likely.

Your thoughts on this, if any, are appreciated.  Smiley

Anybody else have an opinion on my alternate 15 BO? :D

I think you made some good choices Billy.
I  think they should have stuck to the original plan of an all oldies album with maybe It's OK as a closer and then an album of new material.

My "new" album: River Song, Good Timin', That Same Song (w/gospel choir) Had To Phone Ya, Back Home, Everyone's In Love With You, Susie Cincinnati, Shortenin' Bread, Pacific Ocean Blues, Goodtime, San Miguel, Angel Come Home, California Feelin'

I don't get the "Viva Las Vegas"-connection, except maybe that Ann-Margaret was pretty damn hot. Or was that not related to his "joke"? Was he maybe talking about the new re-mix-album "Viva Elvis"?

I believe he was referring to this "Viva Viagra" commercial.

115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's lack of vocals after Friends on: November 16, 2010, 03:10:03 PM
I think that his lack of lead vocals from the Surfs'Up through the Holland album had much more to do with his mental state and relations or lack thereof with the other Beach Boys.

His deteriorating voice seems to me to have little or no role.

He didn't seem very shy about singing here even though it's obvious something is going on with that singing voice...

I think it's great!

And it doesn't necessarily preclude doing any US dates.

117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Songs that have their own life when performed live on: October 18, 2010, 03:21:34 PM
I agree with  both"Marcella "and "Darlin'

And would  also add the live version of "Sail On Sailor" from  In Concert

And "Let The Wind Blow".

Yeah, a VDP Presents SMiLE would be a corker. His own arrangements......... how would he have done it bearing in mind the masterpiece Song Cycle which followed......  Cool

Judging from this arrangement it would be about twice as long.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Brian won a second Grammy for an instrumental?
