I stopped bothering at the word "definitive", for obvious reasons.
Well, all I said was this mix was definitive for me, probably not for everyone else I got that, thanks will give it a listen soon!

Writers and journalists *not* doing their homework??? What a revelation. Don't you think we should direct the fault at them for not checking their facts?
The problem is that sometimes the best sources are considered the people who were there, and by using their discographies or bios, or by interviewing them writers think they are fact checking. There are probably dozens of sources, books, websites, wikipedia, documentaries, cd liners that credit Hal Blaine as being the drummer on I Get Around and Don't Worry Baby...but how many sources are there that credit Dennis Wilson? Well, my new book is one, there might be one or two more...but its like a 25 to 1 ratio. And guess what, if you listen to the session tape for Don't Worry Baby (which I only got a chance to because I actually found the lost multii-track tape)..its obvious that Dennis is the drummer on that session, you can hear him being talked to by Chuck Britz and Brian as they set levels and work out the intro arrangement. He's there, Hal's not...So I'm right, i did my research...but I'm probably in the minority for the rest of my life as a journalist who declares Dennis played on those songs and not Hal. And often when i point it out I get people asking me why am i disrespecting Hal? Or why do I think I know more than David Leaf? etc... etc... Its not an easy thing. Sometimes its like threading a needle. People like Craig Slowinski are doing a major service to the Beach Boys legacy, but he'll undoubtedly get tons of sh*t for pointing out that Carol Kaye did not play bass on the released version of Good Vibrations. The Wrecking Crew are so deified that even fact checking can get you on the wrong side of people. Jon, two questions: - will there be another revision of your dennis or david books, or can I just buy the old editions? They seem to be avaible in Holland - Why does Hal Blaine get the credits for those songs anyway? Is he on the AFM contract?

I can understand Mike's opinion, and maybe I would acted the same as he did in his place, but you should never be afraid of what your fans might think. Follow your muse. If that's 30 versions of Shortin'Bread for Brian, that's fine. If that means that Rivers Cuomo wants to rap, be my guest. Liz Phair same thing. Metallica and Lou Reed can make children records if they want. Artists thinking too much about what will sell or what their fanbase will support, tend to make bland recordings anyway. I rather hear a train wreck than a bland record. Sweet Insanity is better than In The Key Of Disney.
Mike Love gets criticism he doesn't deserve, but it should be noted that his remarks about VDP lyrics in the recent interviews make it seem like he was only in it for the money or for the fame. That's ok, and I like that he's honest about it.

I don't get why Boyd and Linnett weren't given more room to elaborate on their work. For the one or two disc-set I can understand it, but the box-owners are SMiLE-nuts. Why not be more open about where the tapes come from, what they merged with what, where precisely are the fly-in's, when are we hearing in acetate? Ok, you could say we have this board for that... I like to be taken by the hand when I listen and those guys are pro's, 2 pages isn't enough. Same thing goes for the sessions, they should have been twice as many pages at least. For instance, the detuned piano on the 1967 Surf's Up, it's a great novelty, but as somebody pointed out: Brian plays other chords too! I would have liked to have a central place for this sort of info and Boyd and Linnet could have provided it. Maybe this isn't the last SMiLE-release (dvd in the works?) and there are always interviews to draw info from.

The funniest thing is Track 20 on Disc 2 of the box, 'Heroes And Villains: Piano Theme' at about 1:13: Kiss' 'I was made for loving you', anyone? Hahaha!
You're a few decades late to discover that! Well it was a first for me too? Is it possible that Kiss listened to some boots? When did they first emerge? Of course it's a pretty simple melody that anybody could come up with

'Say Thanks first'?
I paid them top dollar, which should say enough. I'm eternally grateful for the work Brian, the boys, the writers who kept the dream alive and all the engineers, producers and managers who made this boxset possible. But even people that did amazing work can make mistakes, and even big mistakes. Taste should be left out of this, but for instance sending a wrong master to the pressing plant is a mistake. Not saying that this is the case...but where are those backing vocals in Barnyard!!!!
