This was great...Thank you so much! Should be put on dvd in the new boxset. It's way more rewarding than just a session put on cd.
BTW, I've seen one video, but 2 passwords. Does it mean there are already more videos? Don't want to be impatient, but material like this, get's you craving for more.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Details on the new greatest hits albums and remasters

If anybody is interested, I work for a organisation that orders cd's from the distribution company and the discs are priced like this in the Netherlands:
50 big ones double disc: 16, 50 euro Greatest hits one disc: 11 euro All the remasters, mono/stereo: 11 euro
This is all before taxes and keep in mind your retailer wants to make some profit too. So in the shops you could probably see those remasters for like 15-20 euro's.

Maybe next year they will do another Box Set tour, like they did in 1993.
To anyone complaining because they did not play their favorite obscure song: how many hardcore catalogue-aware fans attend the shows? 1/2000? 1/2500? Face it, guys, they do US a big favor when theh include deeper cuts. They are entitled to play whatever they want. It is true that going deeper into the catalogue is cool in itself, the group likes it, and can lead to a better appreciation of the group's output. But let's be honest: those twist-dancing crowds of baby boomers.... it takes a lot of nerve to go deeper than the hits (which are great and they perform wonderfully) and sure as hell they have! First of all, they can play whatever they want. Second, it's not about them playing my favorite obscure song. It's about seeing my favourite band making less of an impact than they could. You know, I have taken a look at the Dutch and Belgian charts and a lot of the things they play aren't exactly hits. Little Honda, Little Deuce Coupe, Hawaii, Don't Back Down, 409, Shut Down, Surfin Usa, Surfin Safari, Catch a Wave, I Get Around, Sail on Sailor, When I Grow Up never charted in Holland and I'm pretty sure not in Belgium too. Chart information isn't everything of course. What is a hit? A song that charted or a song that has been played on the radio the last 50 years? So yes, Of course I want them to play their signature songs, but form where I was standing people didn't recognize most of the surf and car songs. You can easily cover that part of your carreer by playing Surfin Usa, Surfin Safari + one extra and I Get Around and Little Deuce Coupe+one extra. Tears in The Morning, I Can Hear Music, Bluebirds over the Mounting were Top 10 hits! You want to please the baby boomers, play one of those. Rock & Roll Music, Do You Wanna Dance and Why Do Fools Fall in Love did what they are supposed to do. Make the people dance. A lot of the early 'hits' didn't. Because they sound a whole lot like the song they played right before. They have Darlin' (charted) and Marcella (charted) in their back pocket. I'm positive their concert would be a lot more balanced if they had played those.

I will admit that I'm a fool, as long as we both acknowledge the fact that I'm right Besides, complaining about setlists is a whole lot more rational than most of the speculation on this board about private lives of bandmembers, how Smile '67 would have went and stereo Wild Honey.

Exactly!
I don't really care for 'most people/Joe Q. Public want them to play the hits ', but if you go by that strategy and want to play a set that will be interesting for non-fans you shouldn't play a lot of songs that sound a lot like eachother and even cover the same themes lyrically. Mix it up a bit, your back catalog has so many different things, and I think your impact is a lot bigger.
That being said, I thought they really played with a lot of energy and knocked out as many songs as possible. They were like the Ramones!

Hey Guy, I missed you! (sorry, we waren wat later!) There were some girls on stage during Barbara Ann. I guess relatives from Bruce. The one in the middle with the Mickey Mouse sweater had to be dragged on stage. Pretty cute! Great show, was surprised by Mike's heavy bass singing. Setlist could have been a lot different, in my opinion. It's not like the crowd went wild upon hearing Hawaii or Don't Back Down, or even Kokomo. Might as well play something of Sunflower or another Pet Sounds-cut. Or Disney Girls, Bruce had almost nothing to do besides making a fool of himself. It's fun to watch him, I have to give him that.

I'm not familiar with the Wild Honey interview, but here is a link to a phone interview with Brian about Smiley Smile you might find interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRFE-24ucxcI find it interesting that the fellow who only a year before had labored with detailed precision and perfected two masterpiece albums (although one didn't get finished) would make a comment like, "oh that was an accident, but it worked out, so we left it in...." Totally different work ethic there. I guess BW left in mistakes before, because they worked. And he had been indifferent to clean mixes before, Today and Pet Sounds are messy as hell. Granted, Smiley Smile is full of weird mistakes and choices, but maybe his work ethic isn't that different. I do believe it has been stated that the "Good" wasn't a mistake, but rather Brian edited it in to the track. even better

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Somewhat painful Bruce Johnston interview in a Dutch magazine

The topic itself is confusing; it is BJ or politics? I will just say that Europeans are always trying to get Americans to say something to acknowledge our role is creating social injustice, so BJ is right.
You lost me at 'Europeans are always trying'...we are not that united! That's part of our problems! Most Europeans (see what I did there?) love the USA and the American culture. Look at me, I'm typing in English on a Beach Boys-forum! Let's all just kiss and make up, and laugh at Bruce's pants!

Yeah, well lot's of European countries aren't based in socialism at all, anyway. But that's indeed Sandbox-talk.
The fact that Bruce gets pissed when a simple question about how great music can be comforting in hard times is asked, is shocking. That's not a political question, in my book. If it's true, because we know only one side of the story. Release the interview-tape and we can decide if Bruce was right or not.

To be honest, there has been lots of discussion on SoS here and I don't think anybody ever suggested that Brian had much to do with it. Mr. Desper's posts are a revelation! At least to me. Thanks!
It also shows that the memory of someone who was really there can alter any historian's view of things (vice versa is also possible, memory is a weird thing). That makes historiography so fascinating to me. Same thing happened in the Armin Steiner thread. Common knowlegde, facts can be pushed away be a single photo (of a recording unit) or a single recording (of a work in progress-SoS). We may never know what really happened, and maybe we don't really have to. The trip down memory lane and archives is so rewarding.
That being said, and before I burst into tears, let's just say that A Cigarette Butt When You Throw It In The Water Goes Pff is the best unreleased rocklyric in history. Have a nice weekend!

I will step over your pitiful comments as I would a dog turd on the sidewalk. That said, should you continue to make such allegations, I will seek out your residence in Florida and burn it down, with your entire collection of records, CDs and bootlegs in it.
I'm just a lurker here and I do enjoy your posts on this great board one million times more than PhilCohen's, but this is crossing the line for me. Can't we just ignore him, how hard that may be...or ban him. SmileySmile.net shouldn't be a place filled with agression and threats. You have to be kidding, right? Not a place for aggression? You must not lurk here very often, then. Andrew can defend himself, but Phil asks for it every single time. You would think after all the times this has happened, that he'd learn his lesson. Honestly, I think he enjoys it. Others piss & moan about the aggression more than Phil, himself does. Yeah, well I tend to read only valuable information, so maybe I've missed this kind of reactions before. I read a lot of other forums (frank black, guided by voices, kristin hersh, weezer, to name a few) and these kind of posts are not tolerated over there. But you know, maybe I should just not care about it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's VDP's problem?
|
on: February 22, 2012, 12:48:30 AM

This thread sounds just like Gorilla vs Bear (or my dad could beat up your dad)
VDP doesn't get along with ML. We shouldn't be surprised, lot's of people don't get along with him. Couple of years later they share the stage with him again. People change for lot's of reasons.
I met VDP once and he was wonderful. My dad (who could beat up your dad...) ran into him in a Belgian restaurant the day after a concert and said 'Mr. Parks, I dont want to bother you, but I was really delighted that you played ....[song title I forgot] last night, thanks'. 15 minutes later a glass of wine is served at my fathers table with VDP's card. So, free wine and a bussiness card from one of your heroes. That's very friendly, if you ask me.
Doesn't sound like a guy 'who is all about the money'. His bitterness about TSS or BB Celebration could very well be about money, though. But I have a feeling it's more driven by the same old SMILE-questions over the years.
It's not just Smile, it's also that VDP helped the Beach Boys get a deal with Warner, helped them out with Sail on Sailor, helped them out on Kokomo and helped Mike Love get a plain ticket. VDP has been very vocal that Mike Love screwed him over in almost all those cases. But as we all know, you could look at the Smile Saga for instance from Mike's point of view and understand his actions. Lately, there has been a rehabilitation of Mike on this board and that's great. On the other hand, if that anecdote about the plain ticket is true, then Mike Love is truly an asshole.
